Woo! Mario & Luigi: Dream Team is finally out in North America! Not really sure why we got it last this time...

Well, it's already too late for me to buy a 3DS unless I import one while in China ... and I really wanted to play Dream Team

Oh well, I'll avoid spoilers until I can play it. I have successfully done so for Skyward Sword so far!

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team looks good although I still need to play the 3rd game in the series. I've played Superstar Saga a bunch of times and Partners in Time only once. They are good games in their own right but lately I have been tired of RPGs.

I highly recommend playing Bowser's Inside Story before Dream Team. It pretty much sets up everything that Dream Team builds off of, like the 2D/3D split and badge system, not to mention introducing characters like Starlow and Broque Monsieur that return.

I've already sunk 5 and a half hours into the game. Between this and New Leaf, I don't think I'll be getting anything accomplished soon.

how similar would the two games be?

I really didn't enjoy BIS all that much but like had a blast with the first two games

honestly I feel like it was the 2D part that really did it in

It's pretty similar, but you no longer have 2D and 3D occuring at the same time. The gameplay is either one or the other. Since all of the special dream gimmicks use Luigi on the touch screen, you won't have the situation in Bowser's Inside Story where you can only do certain level things if Bowser is in a specific location, and (for example) changing the water level requires you to move Bowser to and away from a water pump. This makes using the gimmicks quicker and less tedious. This also means you no longer have to keep track of two character locations.

Plus, the dream worlds are really fun to be in. They're really pretty, and the battles in them are crazy and fun. Even though it is really similar to BIS in a lot of ways, it also has a lot of things that distinguish it from the others.

If you're still iffy on it, there's a demo available in the shop for you to try. I don't exactly know what it contains, but I imagine it will have a little bit of both.

Bowser's Inside Story was one of my favourite RPG games. Actually, it was pretty much the only one I've played, apart from Paper Mario Sticker Star and StreetPass Quest 1&2 (if they both qualify as RPG games).

What I found really annoying was that in BIS, you would be limited to where you could explore at certain points in the game (eg: when Bowser gets crushed, you can't play as him and Mario can't head out of Bowser's body, meaning all you could do was wonder through the trash pit or fight bosses in the gauntlet until you decide to head down a stream to grow Bowser large enough to defeat whatever flattened him, just so you could get back the freedom to explore the world again.) Worse still, once you complete the game, you're hardly able to do anything!

Later next week I should be able to get a copy of the new M&L game. Hopefully the new edition to the series won't be so 'limited'.

Yeah, Dream Team doesn't limit you in that way at all, since you only have one group to control.

Also, I don't remember if this was said before or not, but you can save at any time (when out of battle). This is very helpful, especially if you play on the go a lot.

Also also, BaW, I highly recommend trying out the rest of the Mario RPGs! Try them chronologically, too, so you can get an idea of how the style of Mario RPGs has progressed. The first one, Super Mario RPG, is available on Virtual Console for the Wii/U, but finding physical copies of the other games may be trickier, especially Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

The Etrian Odyssey 4 demo is out on the European eShop; it's limited to 3 starts (wtf?), limits the maximum level of your characters to 10, and has a few other things that are inaccessible. And I hear the savegame you create in the demo can be imported into the retail game?

That said, I won't be going back to the System Menu unless absolutely necessary, and am looking forward to August 30th very much

Yeah, apparently this functionality is built right into the system. I'd love to meet the genius who thought that's a good idea.

3 TRYS? TOO MANY. Y NOT MAKE IT 1!! :specialed:

Seriously though, I don't understand why any of the demos have a limited number of tries. Considering that, all the demos I have played, have some type of barrier to prevent playing the game in full, I don't see the point. Let the player play the demo as much as they want to get their fill so that they can decide whether to buy the full game or not.

3 tries?! The US demo gives you 30

I played the demo once. It's... fine, I think, though I wasn't really paying much attention to what I was doing; I'm still new to/feel uncomfortable with class-based RPGs and oh god some of the UX decisions are atrocious (light blue text on light green background why). I'll try it again sometime later.

I have an American 3DS as well. A lot of the demos on the eShop have 30 uses but not all. I have seen demos use less.

Europe getting lower demo uses is definitely a thing.

I've got a US and an EU 3DS in the house and the US usually has 20-30 uses for most demos (with the exception of the Project X Zone demos which have 5). The EU ones seem to have 5-20 uses.

I've seen the same thing on the Wii U as well - The Wonderful 101 Demo has 20 uses in the US and 15 uses in the EU.

I checked the other demos I have (EU 3DS):

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: 30 starts
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon - Infinity something something: 10 starts
Dead or Alive Dimensions: 30 starts
The Denpa Men: 30 starts
Rhythm Thief: 20 starts
Fire Emblem Awakening: 10 starts
Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed: 15 starts
HarmoKnight: 10 starts
Project X Zone (both demos): 30 starts
Etrian Odyssey 4: 3 starts

...or that's what it looks like, as I've used up some allowed starts already.

I really don't get why something like EO4 - an RPG, with comparatively a lot of content in the demo, which even allows you to save your game - gets so few uses, while something like Project X Zone, where the demos allow you to play a single mission each without much else to do, gets thirty uses.

I've played each PXZ demo once, decided the game's pretty cool and that I want it someday down the line, and that's it - no need to play each mission countless times over.

Quick edit: Reached the end of the EO4 demo; when reaching the stairs down to B2F of the Lush Woodlands, I was told the demo is over, but that I'm free to keep exploring even though the story beyond this point isn't included in the demo, and was warped back to town.

So what do you people think about the Nintendo 2DS? No, that 2 isn't a typo. I do mean the 2DS.

It's funny because I so called that Nintendo would eventually make a 3DS system without 3D capabilities since I imagine it would be much cheaper. I'm not exactly a fan of the new design since a clamshell is more portable but that's just my first impression. I also wonder if calling it the 2DS is the wisest thing to do as there might be confusion with consumers.

I assume that much later down the road, there will eventually be a 3DS with no backwards compatibility with DS games to cut costs even more.

My mom's always wanted a 3DS but she wasn't gonna use the 3D ever. Once I told her about the 2DS, she's quite happy. She might actually get one. :3

I'm pretty fine with the 2DS, now more of Nintendo's general audience can actually own a current handheld x3 Not to mention older folk who don't want the 3D.
