When the Lappy (XP) breaks down, I'll have to invest in a new system.

Mac or Linux?

Macs are the expensive alternative for people who don't want to learn how to actually use computers, as far as I'm concerned.

On the other hand, I know how to use computers and can't afford expensive.

If I were to get a Mac it'd be an old model, assuming Macs go cheap with age like other things.

If you can find an older refurb'd model, I don't see why not. Personally, I'd just get the Vista box and install $linux_distribution_of_choice on it.

If anything, you've got the Ubuntu Forums (google it) and other resources to (wikis and shiz) use in the event something goes Catastrophically Wrong™.

Depending if you're wanting it primarily for graphics work or something like that would be the key here.

If it's for graphics work, Mac hands down. If it isn't and more suited for gaming and other general use, probably need to get yourself a normal PC. Anymore, though, you CAN emulate Windows on Parallels with Mac and the stuff I keep hearing about them almost makes me want to buy one. They're not as sucky as they once were.

And let's not forget Wine on the Linux side.

Bootcamp's logo is amusing to me.

You should probably hold off on Vista until at least SP1/2 comes out (since there are still probably 15 million things wrong with Vista).

I take it you've never touched the terminal.

Regardless, I say Mac OS. But that's because I prefer it to Windows and I don't like messing around with Linux.

Or you could just install XP and avoid the over-configuration of Linux and the hey-idiot-I'm-a-computer Mac feeling.

But hating on MS is cool, so do whatever!

I personally like Macs better, as I grew up with them. All my PCs that I have owned are currently broken. All my Macs (Besides one) are still in working order. I also have Windows XP installed on this one.
I'm pretty sure many of those who hate Macs have never even used one. :/
Really, it all depends on what you are going to use it for.

I've used them. I've watched my brother use his. I still hate them.

Alright from now on I'll have to just keep a bingo card with "XKEEPER TROLLS A THREAD WITH THE MERE MENTION OF LINUX" in every square. As a side effect, I'll win every time. Multiple times, in fact.

Umm... Ubuntu 7.10 doesn't require any configuration out of the box... unless you have old hardware or odd hardware, in which case you'd have the same troubles in XP more than likely. And it leaves the option open for people who want the configuration options to do more with their OS.

And I haven't seen any hating on MS.

You can also try Linux Mint; based on Ubuntu, but actually does something unique. Okay, fine, Ubuntu has its artwork and installer, but otherwise it's the same old GNOME.

Mac if you want a working operating system out of the box; or you can just get a Dell with Ubuntu preinstalled.

Xkeeper was the one that started crying about people hating on MS when this thread had no hating on MS prior to when he said that. Except for people kinda ragging on Vista a bit.

I didn't even hate on Vista, I just said the benefits of Ubuntu 7.10 and how it doesn't take a ton of configuration to get it going (takes probably less than a Windows install).

Although I've got plenty of ammo if you want a war.

Yeah, go me for getting riled up. I seem to have auto-assumed he was getting another laptop, which knowing Linux distros, would be a nightmare for anything not preinstalled. Linux isn't exactly known for its propitary hardware support.

I'm just speaking from my (aging) experience; Linux was a nightmare and Macs hid anything advanced where nobody could get it. XP has generaly always worked fine.

But yeah, before going and installing some OS, it might just be better to make sure it actually, you know, works.
