I never understood how people don't use a common search engine to look for the information they are looking for, unless that person has never used the internet <.<.

But people have to have heard at least one thing about Google, or have seen someone use it.

Yes. On numerous occasions, too.

Don't forget the many stupid people who do use Google but look at the wrong place about "canceling" it

I've used others before Google too (Yahoo, Altavista, Alltheweb ... until 2000-2001 I think), but the whole point is that I used search engines to look for stuff

Google was always my search engine of choice because I was using dial-up until fairly recently. I preferred my search engine to load in less than 20 seconds (Hello, Netscape. Hello, Yahoo.) Askjeeves had a small home page too, but all I ever seemed to get for results were ads.

My point exactly.

People never understand the potential ANY search engine has to ask a freaking question. When in doubt, just google it, thats why I don't ask questions ANYWHERE unless I don't get a reasonable response from any search engine.

When I'm looking for something kind of important*, Google seems to enjoy giving me nothing but:

- Online shops
- Long-dead sites
- Forum threads with only one post (i.e. a question with no answer)
- Lots and lots of carbon copies of the same frickin' useless page
- Every language but English

* "Kind of important" usually translates to "my computer is lying on its side twitching and I need help NOW you idiots"

I always use Google, and one of friends never does He insists on calling me to help with the problem.

Google it! You're using a downloaded copy of the game, add that onto it as well. No, he waits two weeks while I'm on holidays...

What I hate is when you use Google, but don't find anything useful, so you ask someone, and they just tell you to use Google. Or worse, they manage to find it on Google themselves.

Yes, it's very annoying when you spend ~30 minutes Googling something, get out of luck and ask a question, and get a response like "I spent like two minutes Googling it and here it is right on the first page"

The proper reply to that would be "it took you 2 minutes to find it on the first page?"

I've found that it's sometimes faster to ask someone who knows about the subject than it is to Google it... I usually do, though, and I haven't had to deal with anyone outside of message boards that doesn't search for things on their own at all.

I don't know why I put this here.
My work with search.yahoo.com usually finds what I want faster than average. Additionally, when people ask me questions they could simply Google, I usually give them wacky answers to make them do so, E.G. "The sound card's a figment of your imagination created by extra-dimensional bug-men!!!"

Drag's Post #491
Middle school, and high school were FULL of people who used ask.com as a proper search engine.

Here's the bullshit: My class was forced to take a class called "freshman seminar" in high school, and it was such a dumb class, we learned how to use word and excel, yay, and how to speed read, yay, and how to write a paper, yay. Most importantly, they tried to teach people to use yahoo, msn, web crawler, etc. for search engines, instead of ask.com (strangely, my teacher didn't let us use google, but I did anyway. )

A lot of the people in there who were used to ask.com had LOTS of trouble with the "keyword system" of things, and they kept wanting to type out questions, which often yielded the wrong search results.

The bullshit thing was that the next year, freshman seminar was no longer a required class. I guess they realized it was useless and didn't fix anything, because ask.com was still being used all over the place. (that and I have yet to ever need to use excel, word (I use wordpad ), or speed read)

Yeah, in short, the ask.com people were the ones obsessing over myspace, texting, and being dumb during class.

So, wait, they taught you not to use ask.com because they thought it was responsible for the behavior and intelligence of the students? That logic makes no sense. I mean, come on, stereotyping based on the internet search engine they use?

No, they taught us not to use ask.com because ask.com was a crappy search engine.
