I've been having an issue on my netbook for a while. (This is not an issue with Mac OS X, like the video title insinuates - I have noticed this on Windows and Linux as well.)

It's basically "things freeze up, they catch up a few seconds later". It happens whether I'm watching a video or simply typing in Terminal. On OS X, switching desktops seems to trigger it fairly often.

I've attempted swapping HDs around, swapping and testing RAM (it checked out fine), and removing the wireless card (as I first really picked up on it around the time I installed it, as much as I doubt it was the issue).

I'm at a loss for what else it could be. I mention thermal paste in an annotation, but I'm apparently reading it's a bad idea to apply thermal paste to netbooks (AS5, in my case) for some reason instead of the little "pad" of paste the heatsink comes with?

I'm just hoping someone else has some ideas. It's really bothersome.

Sounds like a hardware or driver problem with the GPU.

This sounded fishy to me, so I asked GerbilSoft (who usually knows what he is talking about) and

[12:36] <andlabs> did this guy get bad info from someone
[12:36] <GerbilWork> he did.
[12:37] <GerbilWork> usually thermal paste is better than those shitty pads
[12:37] <GerbilWork> my thinkpad had some thermal pads glued to the heatsink - i removed them and used thermal paste, i *think* it works a bit better
[12:37] <GerbilWork> however, the thermal pads provided a couple mm of displacement, whereas the paste does not
Beyond that I don't know; I have my own speed issues and I need to get around to replacing the thrmal paste on mine, but my laptop is the exact opposite of a netbook :/

Yeah, I had a feeling it was probably bad. (Didn't want to act on it beforehand, though.)

The biggest thing that kept me from doing so, really, is the fact that this issue didn't get resolved by placing a new heatsink (it was happening with the old one).

I forgot to mention that I can move the mouse pointer for some reason during these bursts (at least, in OS X).

Thermal pads can sometimes be better, if the heatsink isn't fully against the chip. Paste only works over extremely tiny distances, whereas pads can be up to 1.5mm thick and still transfer heat effectively. If displacement is necessary, then paste is outright useless unless you stick a small copper sheet in, so you go Chip-paste-sheet-paste-heatsink.
