I'm getting more serious with my video making, to the point where I'm part of a small group who aim to put out videos on a daily basis. With my being in the middle of the exams, so far, I've only been able to produce a video once a week, and even that isn't working out so well, thanks to a technical glitch which has ruined my latest series of videos. However, after my exams, I'd like to create a significant backlog of videos to try and pad my way through my first year of University.

While emulation is nice, there are games on consoles that either don't have emulators, or a simply too powerful for my machine to emulate. I'm looking for a capture card that is relatively cheap (I'm hoping for <£30, but I somehow doubt that) and produces good quality recordings. I won't be using it for anything more graphically powerful than the Wii and nothing earlier than the N64, so I don't need to look into 1080p devices. It'd also be quite good if there is a card that can also capture from hand-held consoles like the GBA or PSP.

I know very little about capture cards, so I figured some of you may know a good solution.

I suggest you get one of these:
Pinnacle Dazzle™ DVD Recorder

Cheapest tool you can get that doesn't totally sacrifice quality for the price.

I've used one for the Wii before, captures it flawlessly from my experience.

I've seen several recommendations for that, so I'm happy. Are there any other components I'll need? I'm certain I'll be needing splitters, because I'll be playing it on my TV, unless I can just play it directly on my PC.

Playing on the PC is not recommended if you hate input lag, if you can put up with that though, you should be okay
Otherwise, splitters and a few extensions are all you will need.

EDIT: Also, the white one only records 50Hz, there is a silver version that supports 60Hz for an extra bit of dosh.

Looks like that page has a Frequently Bought Together bit with both RCA splitter and an extension for about £35. I take it I'll need 3 splitters and 3 extensions? Also, do you have a link for the silver version? I'm assuming that if I record a 60Hz game on a 50Hz recorder, it won't come out so well?

You need to capture cards? That's easy:

The input lag on a PC ranges from around a second to several more. You'll need a splitter without doubt if you intend to play anything seriously.

I said it before and I'll say it again, Dazzles are utter shit. If you want one prepare to go through hell getting it to work properly.

I keep hearing equal parts Dazzles are good, and equal parts that. Seems to be a luck-of-the-draw for the quality and functionality. I guess I won't really know unless I buy it. Unfortunately, I don't have money to throw around. Amazon has a refund service, right? Or would I have to go through the actual seller? It says that it's by Avid, but actually sold by Amazon, so I'm guessing I can just go complain straight to Amazon then.

I think the thing with Dazzles are that they're cheap, and you-get-what-you-pay-for is in full effect.

As someone that does a lot of streaming and recording... Dazzle = terrible. Don't do it, man. Everything below is coming from a cheaper external USB capture card point of view.

I personally have a Roxio Game Capture HD Pro which is pretty good. There's still some lag - there always will be when capturing over USB 2.0 - but it's far less than some of the others I've used previously such as the Haupaggue HDPVR.

A better option is the AverMedia Live Gamer Portable which came out about a month ago. Lowest lag out there if that's really important to you, which you can see here in this little comparison video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjQnTAxC9eI

Well, looks like I'm not buying anything for quite a while. I'm not willing to potentially waste £40 on something that only might work if I'm really lucky once in a blue moon, and I absolutely can't afford anything decent - a sizeable pitfall of having no income.

Thanks for the help, however. Much appreciated!

Yeah, I'm late, but I'll second the others--cheap stuff may as well be nothing for how badly they work. Go big, or go home, when it comes to cards.

May I suggest the StarTech PCI Express HD Video Capture Card? It says HD, but allegedly it's capable of capturing 240p signals without a scan line doubler, which few if any modern devices can claim to do. I haven't actually tested its capability to do that, but I may buy one soon and give it a spin.

PEXHDCAP is extremely good. It's actually a 1:1 copy of the Micomsoft SC-500N1 capture card (you can even use the Micomsoft drivers, if you prefer), and has really good quality. You can capture pretty much everything except composite and s-video with it.

I use it to capture video from my arcade boards by just pushing the video outputs over a VGA cable and hooking that to a VGA->DVI adapter. Great card, highly recommended.

No composite or S-Video? Then what is the point of the 240p support? Most consoles that output component already produce a 480p or greater signal.

RGB capture over VGA works perfectly. 240p support lets you use any RGB modified console (or in my case, arcade boards with a passthrough JAMMA harness) over it.

Eventually I'm looking to get one of these, a PCI-E or something.

Main thing though is I'd aim for either 480P Component content or regular-resolution analog stuff.

Unfortunately, it seems you would need something which can promote composite or S-Video to component without affecting the resolution if you want to capture conventional resolution analog output consoles.

It does support DVI-I, though, so I guess a VGA upconverter works as well.
