Hello,

I have found 4 Metroid GBA prototypes with Debug Mode.

http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?45288-Metroid-Fusion-Metroid-Zero-Mission-Prototypes

Anyone want to help me to find some differences with the final games?

Thanks in advance

Best Regards,

The best way to get people to see if there are any differences, is generally to release the roms. That way, there are many people looking for different things, and as the saying goes, "many hands make light work".

I fully agree with him not wanting to release the dumps. It's also a personal treasure to him probably. Totes would be to me. But I'd release pix of erry map.

DH can automate these things if I made it.

As someone who is a bit of a preservationist, the easiest way is really to release the dumps. I'm not sure if there's anything I could do to help speed it up (I can perhaps offer some payment towards seeing them out), but it would be a nice gesture to the community.

Even in games in which the whole thing has been recorded and shown off, there can still be extra things lurking around that aren't visible because some byte is 00 instead of FF.

This also means that any documentation you do make won't be able to go on TCRF; we don't document unreleased prototypes. :/

We have quite a few unreleased prototypes. They're all just leaks, after all.

The Metroid ones, or others? It really depends on how long and hard you Google, I mean, Ocarina of Time Master Quest Debug took me a little while, but it's more famous than prototypes, for example. Long story short, try Google or other sites, and try asking people.

Interesting, I've only seen Kiosk roms. I need to google harder when I get home. I'd love to put proto support in DH.

The Metroid ones aren't out there AFAIK, and considering who it is who has them... I'm not counting on ever getting a release. See the Lufia fiasco.

I think he meant "unreleased" as in "not dumped yet" =P

Lufia fiasco?
The lufia II beta rom is fixed and work.
It's a proto with a lot of differences.
And I don't want to release it for now.
Thanks for interdpth and his very good work

@interdpth:

The prototypes are very hard to find. Having one with no differences is difficult so imagine with real differences...
The prototypes games are new for me.
I have one passion: 3dfx prototypes like the elusive Voodoo5 6000.

Wow some prototypes of the GBA Metroid games have been found? Pretty neat. I used to play the hell out of Metroid Fusion back in the day. I can remember pretty much all the scenarios that happen in the game and in what order too so I could figure out differences there if any. I played Zero Mission as well, not to the degree of Fusion but the same applies to this game as well. Keeping tabs on items such as missile tanks and energy tanks I could never do though....

Regardless, this is cool stuff

Last I heard, the owner of the Lufia proto didn't understand how to dump the game properly and ended up permanently damaging the proto, forever ruining any merit that cart had as a pristine piece of development history. Perhaps even more painful was that the damaged game was repaired with code from the final version of the game (if I recall correctly). While this did, in the end, seem to get the game running, it was no longer completely protypical at this point.

That is the fiasco I think is being referenced. It was a horrible thing to witness happening. At least it wasn't something like a Resident Evil 1.5 or a Conker 64 or an early Goldeneye64 going up in smoke.

Didn't you "fix" it by patching in data from the final American rom amongst other stupid things that aren't actually fixing it?

We got DH loading a bit of the data. Hopefully by EoD today we can have screenies of all the rooms.
Also, please keep the non-metroid related shit out of this thread.

Hi there! You seem to be confused and think you're the moderator.

You're not.

That being said, as the moderator: The stuff about the totally-destroyed Lufia proto is off-topic, no matter how insanely stupid the handling of the entire ordeal was. Not that it helps much, because when you actually look at what *IS* on-topic...

...the amount of information you can glean from screenshots of maps is incredibly tiny. Without someone who knows what they're doing combing through the ROM, the only information you're going to have is "well, the map looks slightly different." You won't know if there's unused text strings, you won't know if there's dummied-out graphics data, you won't know a lot of things. An eventual release is really the only hope of actual documentation -- screenshots of something that we can't actually verify are just going to languish in the forum.

Hey, we're not seeing any released roms, and as Xkeeper has said, none of this can go on the wiki anyway. If you want to see any in-depth analysis of these prototypes, then the best way is to release them, not keep them tucked away where a simple mechanical failure, a rogue virus, or a myriad of things can happen, and they'll be gone for good. When preserving prototypes, the best way is to think pessimistically. That way, everyone benefits, from the owner knowing that they have contributed something major to the community, to the curious wondering what went into the production of these games.
