I've been hex-looking into the Rockman X4 Special Trial Version, and I found some plaintext ASCII strings. These are all I've found though, I was on the hunt for strings that might match a debug mode.

This appears to be an internal categorization of player, enemy, voice and effects sets. Found at about 0009ece0 in the file X4.EXE:

Everything there seems to make SOME sense, since it lines up with the filenames present on-disc. PL00 is X, PL01 is Zero. SE_COM is shared sound effects (I.E. common), and the SE##_*## seem to be stage-specific sound effects, whether to enemies or areas. SE_STSEL is the stage select, and SE_PLSEL would be the player select.

Interesting there is the reference to a "VO00_X01". It doesn't match anything in the files, nor does Zero (PL01 in this instance) have a matching entry. There aren't any other tidbits I can find, though. Also, to note: SE08 does not exist in this version.


As well, there's an internal file listing tucked away, probably from testing. Or a list of compiled files, maybe!

X7's early content has always been intriguing to me. Honestly though, I don't believe anyone's taken the time to look through the final game's assets either. Who knows what remnants lay hidden.

There's also a demo available that gives us a look earlier into the game's life, so that would be interesting to look at as well. That is all that needs to be said about it. We don't usually take the game's quality into account when we're dissecting it, and for good reason -- some of our best content comes from games that either aren't very good, or aren't easily approached due to language barriers.

tl;dr: There's content, someone really oughta look at it eventually. Quit arguing and move on.
