Last week I purchased a VHS cassette called Target: Get Into The Game. Apparently, this was a promo guide prepped by Target stores to showcase the then-upcoming PlayStation and Nintendo 64 games that year. In an era when simple, colorful games reigned supreme, it's nice seeing how games were... just games, period. 1998 was the greatest year for gaming ever.

Anyways, I'm in the process of ripping footage of certain games from this video tape. The tape contains promos of Crash Bandicoot 3, Spyro The Dragon, Ocarina of Time, and Superman 64. Among others that will be uploaded in this playlist soon.

Probably the most interesting piece of footage in this VHS is the Ocarina of Time promo. Among many other elements, Link has different voice samples in this footage! I suspect in this point in time, his voice was done by one single voice actress.

A special mention should be made for Superman 64. It's a terrible game where "YOU. ARE. SUPERMAN." It's only fitting that it's promo should be just as bad; I guess even the marketing department had a hard time advertising this mess of a product.

<object width="640" height="360"><embed src="https://www.youtube.com/v/lAwItggKHc4?hl=en_US&version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Does anyone have any request of games they want to see uploaded and ripped online?

Nice, thanks for the uploads. Shame about the watermarks, though.

Would it be possible for you to rip the whole tapes?

I do have the entire rip available. I just wanted to upload the most interesting parts (OoT) first so people can appreciate and enjoy them individually. If more people want the whole tape uploaded, I'll be more than happy to give. In the meantime, I'll be working on other projects.

Out of curiosity, what hardware are you using to capture this, and how? S-Video or Composite?

That OoT video is a goldmine of rarities! I see Adult Link with the Fairy Ocarina, Young Link with the White Slingshot, shorter Kokiri sword, and Navi on B, and the old, red targeting box. I also see a small glitch in the first scene, where Link's pulled the sword. It looks like its clipped through the pedestal.

Well, I don't think anybody would not want to see the entire rip. =|

If it's already done as you say, perhaps you could just leave it uploading in Youtube while you work on other things? That would be very appreciated.

According to the post, it's VHS, so I doubt composite or s-video matters that much.

... yes it does, actually. I've captured stuff from VHS tapes via S-Video and there's a little bit less interference / blurring through it than with Composite. Of course, if the source material sucks (like EP tapes with Saturday morning cartoons, haha) then there won't be that much of a difference. VHS is a lossy format, unfortunately - but at least you can make things suck less with S-Video.

Heck, there's VHS decks with Component output, unbelievably.

I mostly want to know what hardware he's using so I can shop around.

Actually, this makes perfect sense. VHS tapes store the chroma using a lower carrier frequency than a standard video signal. The conversion from VHS to either S-video or composite requires the chroma to be resampled, potentially reducing quality. Component has more bandwidth than a VHS tape can ever possibly use, so it's guaranteed to lose no information. This is particularly important when you're making copies of a master tape.

</nerd>

Component video might be overkill for a VHS tape, though.

Not to mention the completely different voice actor, the different symbol in the forest temple, and it looked to me like the Skulltula's death animation was a little more erratic than in the final. Interesting indeed.

Moreover, the Jump command actually made Link jump up (you can see that the player used it once in the video). That's particularly interesting, wonder why they removed that.

Navi is red, the lizards have different voices, and that spider bounced around for quite a while before it died.

I was worrying for a moment that I was imagining that the lizards sounded different.

Link already jumps automatically whenever it's needed, and with the best precision possible, so a Jump button would be just redundant.

That's not a very worthy counter-point. One could easily say that the jump button makes automatic jumps redundant and there was no reason to add the latter at the loss of the former.

I understand and agree that it makes the game flow a bit more efficiently, but calling it out as redundant is misleading :/

I say it's redundant because, at best, you'd be able to do with it exactly what the automatic jump does, and the game seems to be designed around those on-the-edge jumps.

seems like the voices were all just temps (the lizard and all) before they got the final actors in there...not too uncommon of a practice when you need to time things specifically to events having voice acting, but in a game like this and especially with recorded footage it seems a bit unusual that they might do that. Could also just be that they really did decide to change the actors later in development. Interesting finds!
