We all heard them growing up, we may have even spread them ourselves. So let's hear it, what's the best lie you have heard OR told to someone about a game?

The worst one I heard was that there was a second hidden room in A link to the past. When you got to Chris' room, you had to Dash the North, South, West and East walls 100 times each, then bomb all four corners. Then kill yourself (somehow) and when you come back, there will be a hole that leads to the GOLDEN ARROWS!!1

So, what's your story?

This is probably one of the most common ones: back around the time Gold and Silver came out, and Crystal had yet to come out, one of the "cooler" kids was talking about his uncle worked for Nintendo, and that the next version they were making was going to be called Black version and if your Pokemon's health went all the way down, it DIED.

Yep. Of course, I didn't really believe it. Similarly, a different kid talked about he somehow knew that in the five hundred-somethingeth episode of the Pokemon anime (which "was in development but hadn't been released yet") they were going to kill of Pikachu.

Lot of kids like introducing death into Pokemon it seems.

If you collect all the Unown shapes in Pokemon G/S/C, the pokegods will appear.

Also, the Mew under the truck one was noted at my school.

Also, there was Pikablu, which was said to exist for the longest time.

Also, there was going to be this feature in Red/Blue where you go to the Unknown dungeoun and find Mewtwo. Walk around him 256 times and a FMV of the Pokemon movie would play.

On a Game Boy.

Yeah.

I remember these, I believe Pikablue was confirmed to be Marill in the end.
I was also told there was a Fusion Machine in Gold and Silver. I wish there was.

In Super Mario 64, jump on the wood bridge in front of Peach's castle 200 times and a giant star will appear underneath it and it will give you all 120 stars! And the triforce!

Pressing certain buttons after throwing a Pokeball in RBY and GSC to increase the chance of catching the Pokemon.

And I still catch myself holding down A, more out of reflex than anything else, although it is a nice reminder of more carefree days.

In Ocarina of Time, if you catch the Hylian Loach, it will crawl into the crack where the stream flows into the fishing pond and open a path, revealing a giant fishing pond as the water source.

Also, if you reach the cave at the bottom of Zora's Domain, you will enter the Unicorn Fountain.

In Pokemon Red & Blue, Mewtwo can level up into Mewthree (your method may vary), and it looks like this.

In Star Fox 64, completing the game 100% unlocks the Shogun mech as an option in multi-player.

In Super Smash Bros, beating the game on Very Hard without losing any lives unlocks Bowser.

There was a time when I believed all of these things. Games were much more mysterious back then, and I kind of miss those days.

I think the most common one was that if you caught all the Unown in alphabetical order something would happen.

And my stupid cousin told me that the first boss in Majora's Mask was the Skullkid and that he had beaten him and gone to the second dungeon. Of course, he was lying because he couldn't figure out where the first dungeon was - I did eventually, thankfully my English was better than his (if still poor enough to fall for his lie for some time)

God, the White Chocobo in FFVII. Something really complicated about breeding max stats green chocobos with one of the useless nuts. The White Chocobo can go underwater so you can use it to go under the marsh and fight Onyx Weapon.

It was just detailed enough to fool my sister and me to the point of seeing just how good of a green chocobo you can ever have.

To this day we refer to stupid false rumors about games as white chocobos.

A modern example: Cave Story's Fourth Ending

This is an elaborate April Fools' joke that really bothers me. It's just so much work for something that's so dishonest.

Ironicly, that poke death idea can be traced to the Cubone/Baby Kangaskhan relation and it's dead mother.

I remember the rumors of getting a Mew though ingame ways that wasn't glitch related.

And the nude Zelda rumors...

I once talked to the guy who gave you the Old Rod 1000 times because I heard that's how you could get a super rod that would let you visit areas underwater.

And don't even get me started on Charmander Field... I was such a gullible little child.

A fourth warp whistle in SMB3. Ironically enough it's possible to do so now with some hacking, but a legitimate way...

I don't remember any more outside of them, but I used to love hearing them because they always seemed so mysterious. Even when there were internet rumors of stupid things such as in Perfect Dark, it always just kept an air of mystery about the games that I always enjoyed, as if there was still room for something.

Waluigi in SM64DS. I was always sceptical about it, tried it a couple of times and just thought 'eh, screw it.' Outside of that, I didn't really fall into rumours.

There is the funny one where a bunch of people said that if you managed to do a bunch of stupid shit in Ruby and Sapphire then you could go to johto and kanto. For some reason my older brother thought this was true until I explained that there is simply no data for it there in the games/ROMs so therefore it would be impossible...

I heard that its actually was supposed to be the American Release date for Paper Mario 64 as February 4th 2001. According to its wiki it was released a day later on February 5th 2001 in America.
When i look back i'm surprised i even slightly believed the rumors about Unlocking luigi since most of them are incredibly stupid.

I can't for the life of me read "L is real 2401" on that texture. My best guess, and that of others if Google is any indication, is "Eternal Star"... but really, that 32x32 (or whatever it was) texture is far too small to read anything off of.

Yeah I remember that stupid video by RustySporks. If Nintendo saying that he couldn't be beat wasn't enough, a simple text search with a hex editor of text found in that video doesn't turn up anything in the ROM. I hate dicks who purposely hack games to deceive people.

At any rate, one lie I believed when I was younger was that mew was under the truck on the screen of the S.S Anne in Pokemon Red and Blue. I actually went through a lot of effort to see if it was true or not by trading a pokemon that knew cut from my blue version to my red version. Of course, it was all a letdown when I tried to move the truck with strength.

I only remember a few rumors that were passed over to me just for fun. When I was just a tot (6 or so), I was watching my father and bro playing Ocarina of Time. They had just gotten to the Happy Mask salesman's shop, and I noticed a mask that wasn't for sale (which I find out later was the mask that lets you listen to the grey eye-clock statues). They told me something, but it was too quick for me to comprehend at the time, so the most I got was "... you could turn the world upside down..." and that stuck to me for awhile. I literally thought the world turned grey, the screen flipped upside down and things were distorted or something. I was skeptical, so I decided to ask them to repeat themselves a few minutes later and they ignored me.

Years later, me, my brother and his friends were playing Super Smash Bros 64. I wanted to take a small break from playing, so I let them play one round without me, and I walked away. After the round, one of my bro's friends walked over to me and told me about a secret move on Ness called "PK Magnet" that pulls all players on screen to Ness and constantly beats them up by 300% until flinging them away. I was skeptical, so I asked "You did it just now?" and he playfully agreed. The time he told me made me believe it more, and made me regret not playing with them! I took the hook, line and sinker on that one.

There were also a ton of rumors about SSB:Melee that gave the game a huge aura of mystery for me that was important to me in my childhood. I can't name anything specific, but I always felt there were so many secrets about the game, and the end was never really the end.
