Here

Some guys got their hands on a build of RE 1.5 and, rather then release it, have been trying to polish it up and fix the bugs etc. because why not. THAT version got into the hands of someone else who tried to sell it, and now they've released their WIP. So it's sadly not a "virgin" prototype, and as a result I'm not entirely sure it should be documented on the wiki. But that's not really my decision to make.

It's not a replacement. According to OKeijiDragon, the original apparently still exists, untouched, and will be released in the future. The team behind the companion project just released their WIP because they were forced to let the cat out of the bag due to someone working in the shadows, trying to monetize it against their will.

So, no need to get on the "YOU RUINED SOMETHING PRICELESS" bandwagon until we know more!

I, for one, have no problem such such a concept. So long as the original item remains as unmodified as possible (that is, as long as it remains the self-same object as it was when it left the development team's hands), a prettified version is a way to appease to fans who would have loved, and still would, to get a playable version of the 1.5 game.

Is there a danger in how one knows exactly what constitutes a 1.5 experience? Of course, and I think that's perfectly acknowledged. The project isn't exactly a restoration, as much as it's, through a compilation of assets and information concerning 1.5, an attempt to recreate what the game seems it was going to be. That is is the hope, at least, withstanding an absurd ideas, such as stuffing in mutant teddy bears and the like.

One must simply remember that no matter how authentic the 1.5 restoration project is, it will never be the exact thing intended by the development team, which is in turn never the exact thing brainstormed before it.

I'm just glad that this information indirectly confirms that there is a physical copy held by someone and that it has information capable of being extracted, as demoed by the video footage. That is at least my little assumption, for any one can fake anything with enough effort. But the sheer amount of footage depicting 1.5 assets as seen through early footage and scans is something that, if someone did go through all the trouble of recreating, they have my sincere impression!

For what it's worth.

Fair enough! I just wanted to give a heads-up on this one because, well, it's not perfect but its something.

Trying to "finish" a prototype is an interesting idea, but it'd be really annoying if they didn't release an unmodified version as well.

Somebody finished the prototype of Hopping Mad (NES version) and the original prototype was never released.

Because you now have a completed version, why would you like a broken one!?!?!?

Because the finished one is in now way what the final game was supposed to be. I suppose in some rare cases, the only issue with a prototype is, say, none of the animations are correctly aligned--and so some menial correction can give you what the prototype was supposed to be.

However, the authors behind the project are injecting new, outside code into the game, which starts to cross the borderline. What the project seems to be doing is trying to finish it according to expectations of the restoration team, and that is not what the expectations of the original dev team are (as I find it incredibly unlikely that the restoration team has been in contact with the original devs, nor came into possession of a blueprint of the game's scenario and events).

This project, and I can be wrong, seems more like they're taking an existing, unfinished game and putting in guessed-elements, and fixing present elements where available, in order to create not Resident Evil 1.5, but to create a distinct experience based off of the 1.5 files.

While I don't have access to this original prototype, and so I can't honestly know how much injection of new elements is present as opposed to simply reenabling/fixing old elements, I highly doubt the mod thus far is meant to restore present content alone. Their goal seems to be to create the missing 1.5 game. This isn't reenabling scrapped scenarios, like in KotoR 2, which had most of the missing stuff still in-game that only needed reenabling. This is more like a full creation of new content to pass as old content. Which, naturally, isn't the same as the old content no matter how hard one tries.

----------------------

It sounds to me like a division between accurate emulation and just being able to play games: this isn't a "completed" version in any natural sense. Though it walks the line, the project seems more akin to some group simply guessing at what the final 1.5 experience would have been. However, development info seemed to have suggest that the vanilla 1.5 project was fairly complete before it was scrapped, including a final boss battle, so it could perhaps be more of a route of just reenabling and polishing some unfinished elements that are comparably smaller than an entire scene or event in-game.

Most of all, having the original, unmodified prototype means two things, amongst many:

1) We can compare the "complete" version to find out what, exactly, survives in their finished version, and see whether the restoration team took liberties with their work. One reason this is important is because less-inclined fanbases may take the artificial restoration project as an assumed 100% representation of what the original dev team intended 1.5 to be (and again, these are two distinct experiences and thus would be a false assumption.

2) We would have an actual copy, for all intents and purposes, of as an unmodified distribution of the unfinished game as possible. We don't want another Lufia II experience where someone fucks with the original source code and has to port FINAL GAME CODE into the game just to get it running again. It not only completely invalidates the original source prototype: it completely fucks the chances of ever having a picture into the original development cycle as clearly as we could have. This speaks most strongly to the archival circles who wish to preserve the history of game development, and to avoid baseless speculation and insertion of personal beliefs and biases into said-history.

Not to mention that some people are already spreading it as the real thing, so others will eventually document it as such (while the prototype will probably not be seeing the light in years... if ever).

According to Frank Cifaldi on Lost Levels, the actual untouched beta is supposed to be released alongside the hack. Apparently they released a hack early cause some guy was selling builds of their unfinished work and passing it off as the proto. Another danger in these type of projects.

They should simply release the original proto too now, but that would simply make too much sense.

That's what they should've done in the first place. But again, too much sense.

Either way there are still a few things obviously originated from Capcom to be gleaned in this slightly modified version. One interesting thing I noticed is that the kennel room which has a sewer entrance in the final has names above the dog's cages, and 2 of the names would be used by later RE protagonist. Claire from the final RE2 and then Piers who turned up years later in RE6.

Which one? The untouched one, or the modified one that was the reason this thread was created in the first place?

This is the list of files in that torrent:

BH1_Full_Game_Debug_Sample_01-31-1996/Bio Hazard (J) (Sample 1996.01.31) [SLPS-00222].bin	701.7 MiB

BH1_Full_Game_Debug_Sample_01-31-1996/Bio Hazard (J) (Sample 1996.01.31) [SLPS-00222].cue 0 MiB
BH2_BETA_v2.iso 744.6 MiB
BH2_TRIALEDITION.iso 304 MiB
BH_TRIALEDITION.iso 259.7 MiB
Biohazard (Beta Built 1995-08-04)/BioHazard - 1995 - 08 - 04 - Sample.bin 19.1 MiB
Biohazard (Beta Built 1995-08-04)/BioHazard - 1995 - 08 - 04 - Sample.cue 0 MiB
Biohazard (Beta Built 1995-10-04)/BioHazard - 1995 - 10 - 04 - Sample.bin 95.8 MiB
Biohazard (Beta Built 1995-10-04)/BioHazard - 1995 - 10 - 04 - Sample.cue 0 MiB
Resident Evil 1.5 Beta/BH2.bin 140.4 MiB
Resident Evil 1.5 Beta/BH2.cue 0 MiB

Edit: After talking to a friend who downloaded the hacked 1.5 release, the file size of "1.5 Beta" in this torrent more or less matches the hacked release. So this isn't anything new, just the already known beta dumps of RE1 and the Trial Edition (demo) discs of 1 and 2.
