TCRF hosting with PCGamingWiki
Andrew Tsai - 1:47 AM (7 hours ago) to me
Hey Xkeeper, this is Andytizer/PCGamingWiki admin.

We've recently moved over from a Linode 1024 to a dedicated server SP 16G which will help cope with our very large traffic spikes.

I'm wondering if you're interesting using our dedicated server for free, in exchange for some form of banner linking to PCGamingWiki.

Let me know what you think.
Andytizer

PCGamingWiki is freaking helpful for running games on PC that have either bad ports or don't run that well anymore. I have needed to use the wiki for running Max Payne with sound and getting Hitman Codename 47 running.

That's all I can say on the matter.

This is an intreasting one, if everything goes well then TCRF can solve both it's bandwith issues and stop funding worries.

On the other hand though you're basically trusting someone I don't suppose you know well to host TCRF, which would hold me back going for it.

But I have had good experiences with PCGamingWiki, getting games like RollerCoaster Tycoon saving. I would probably go with the offer.

The offer sound really good, IMO! It seems funding has been a concern before, so why not?

I was actually planning on flatly rejecting this, but it's good to know that you guys don't seem to mind.

I definitely believe that just rejecting it straight away would be a bad idea.

PCGamingWiki is a reputable website, and being able to get hosting for free sounds nice.

It all comes down to if the server could use the combined pressure, and just exactly how obtrusive the banner would be.

But it sure as hell is worth thinking over, I'd definitely keep it in mind.

TL;DR: +1 on every other post.

I didn't say anything on the matter since, you know, I'm very well aware of when things are moved and someone else owns them, especially with this board's history.

Just figured I'd mention it is a good website. I don't know if it is a good idea though.

I worry about what their webhost's Acceptable Use Policy would permit/deny. Despite the fact that pages all over their site reference the AUP, I cannot find a trace of it on their website at all. (Hell, Googling 'site:ovh.co.uk "Acceptable Use Policy"' to try to find it fails; it just finds all the pages referencing it.)

I say this because I've seen AUPs prohibit IRC connections before, and that might have a negative effect on TCRF if that happened to be the case here.

Also another thing to keep in mind is that Valkyrie hosts more than just TCRF. If we move TCRF to someone else's server, where does everything else go? I highly doubt this person wants to take everything else on the server with TCRF...

Inuyasha brings up a good point.

Though if there aren't any outright detriments, I can +1 it so long as it doesn't go screwing up everything. Free is nice though. I like free. The lack of an "acceptible use policy" being visible does worry me. Reservations until I hear more on it, anyway.

You guys know more than I do on all this technical stuff, so... yeah. :/

Google's cache of their Terms and Conditions of Services page maybe?

Haha, I went to their help page and apparently you can't actually view any page, they all get redirected to the index.

Good show.

The help page works for me, Xkeeper. I'm using Chrome.

Also, lots of PDFs here: https://www.ovh.co.uk/support/termsofservice/

Of course I looked there. A lot of PDFs, but no specific AUP.

Also:

4.3 For security reasons, the operation of Internet Relay Chat services from the Website
(including without limitation bots, proxy, bouncer, etc.) requires the prior approval of the
Supplier, which may be refused in the Supplier’s absolute discretion.

Not looking good.

Why not just keep the old one. PCGamingWiki might be good as a wiki but i don't think that should affect your choice here. I also agree with inuyasha that no AUP is not good.
