This is a game very similar to Raptor: Call of the Shadows, only with tons more customizable stuff and options and all that. The game is freeware now so . It also has a multiplayer option (over the interwebs even ) but I'm not sure how it works. You can also do 2-player over LAN or on the same computer.

Wikipeduh info on Tyrian

Tyrian "fansite", but has a bunch of downloads (like custom ships/weapons/levels/etc)

OpenTyrian, a remake of the game in C (from Turbo Pascal) so that you don't need DOSBox to play it (still unfinished though)

Tyrian message board, lots of info

DOSBox v0.72 (to run Tyrian v2.1 with)

The Tyrian v2.1 game (zip format)

Tyrian is kickass.

I keep going back through and playing it over and over again.

Tyrian2000 works in Windows, by the way, if you can find it. Adds a new (albeit short) episode, as well.

It works in Windows, yes, but has no music/sound, which is why I recommended v2.1.

Hm... Ah, yes. The DOS era. I remember using it alongside Windows 3.11.

Squee!

Someone else who knows this awesomesauce game. No seriously. You have no idea how excited I got when I saw that thread title...thinking 'Hey, I didn't post that!'

*squees again*

;

Yes, I am overly excited because this is one of my favourite games of all time. I got this game way back in 1996, I got Tyrian 2.0 on a CD. I still have that CD. And the instruction manual.

Yes, that's right. I am a ridiculous fanboy of a game that ISN'T Advance Wars. Whodathunkit.

Also, Episode 5 in Tyrian 2k is crap. Tyrian 2.0 (Or 2.1 if you play on Christmas Day) is the best version of the game methinks. Still can't beat ENGAGE mode though. :/

Hmm...

Also, Carrot-Ship is the coolest ship in the game. Pity the Stalker 21.?.? is better. :/

*opens up Tyrian and starts playing again*

Edit: Okay, man I must have picked a good time to play again. Was playing on Hard, and did the trifecta of Secret Levels in Episode 1 (Minemaze, Asteroid? and Windy)...I haven't played Windy in ages...I could never figure out how to actually get to that level.

Urgh. Stuck on AstCity, Full Game, Easy.

And I consider myself pretty well-equipped, too... Gencore Maelstrom with mid-level (6 or 7, I think it costs something like 32k for my next level on each) Fireball and Heavy Missile Launcher, one Vulcan Option, MicroCorp HXS Class A shield...

Went through Bubbles and Asteroid? (unsuccessful), too.

You can always switch weapons at any time (and "selling" weapons gives you back 100% of your money ).

yeah, I know that, but I've not yet figured out a better combination. I'm trying not to sell my Vulcan Option yet because I can't get it back if I do, and it's been rather helpful.

In short, I think it's just that I'm not good enough at this yet

Edit: Go figure. Swap out the missile for a Mega Cannon, and I clear it, but I think it's just because I was playing at 2 AM yesterday

Edit2: Cannon, not Wave.

"Option"? You mean those, I think they're called "sidekick"s, thingies? Yeah, I have both as vulcans.

I only had the money for one at the time without severely weakening my main weapons, as it was an early-game secret level when I got that one. As I recall, I actually downgraded my generator one level to cover the one I bought.

Anyway, up to Brainiac now. Maxed Heavy Missile, Fireball, Microcorp HXS Class B Shield, Vulcan pod and Atom Bomb, using Stalker 21.126, with that generator that costs 50,000. I love this game.

I didn't know there was such a fan community for this game.

I downloaded it and played it when I was in the hospital for back surgery, helped kill time. I never did beat it, but it's a lot of fun. I like how you can choose different paths so it isn't linear. Gives it a lot of replay value, too.

You haven't played this before? Heh, we got this when we were as tall as a lunchbox

Anyways, starting a new game soon. Going to play a 2P arcade with my friend. Hopefully we can finish it this time.

I don't even recall hearing of it until I saw this thread. Then I proceeded to play it after getting bored enough to do so.

Well, maybe we were just too much into all these "old" games. I have a CD, which has over 1000 old games, including Tyrian, Doom, Duke Nukems, Heretic and more.

I remember Sim City 2000, Civilization, Deadlock, Jill of the Jungle, Chip's Challenge, etc. Played a lot more strategy games back then. Should get back into it, my Civ4 and Dawn of War are gathering dust so to speak.

I'm a big fan of Team17's Addiction Pinball.

The animations for the Worms table are absolute nonsense, as are all the voices and other things.... it's just a blast to play, literally and figuratively
