I have used virtualization a couple of times, but I have yet to use it extensively. I just started using VirtualBox, which is decent enough, but I'm wondering if there is anything better.

I used Oracle VirtualBox to try Windows 8 (running within OS X 10.7 "Lion")- after one of the updates (I think the Consumer Preview?) it started to run unacceptably slow on my MacBook Air, so I stopped using it, though I suspect it was an OS issue.

Beyond that I have no real experience with virtualization.

Tons.

Sandboxing things, testing out Linux things that I don't want to set up a physical install for, just doing Windows things on OS X (when I have it booted, which isn't much these days sadly)...

...And old versions of Windows for the hell of it.

Yup.

I do all my romhacking in a VM. I've got a copy of Windows XP with Parallels set up to run it. It's quite a nice setup to be honest.

I do all of my work at work in a Ubuntu 12.04 VM I set up.

Back when I was stuck on a Macbook at school, I used VMWare Fusion to mantain a mirror of my home PC (XP) so that I wouldn't be stuck without my usual means of communication or drawing. I admit, having a virtual PC over a Windows laptop did come in handy a couple of times when I caught a devestating virus. I still maintain the laptop as a backup, but it mostly just sits in the corner now that I'm home for good.

Rarely, but yes, I use one for projects that involve really old stuff.

I use VirtualBox to test my hobby OS as well as for running a Windows XP VM to run older (sometimes 16-bit) programs such as Sphinx C-- (again for my hobby OS).

Occasionally, when I run into compatibility issues. For the most part I don't have a use for it though.

Yes, I use VMWare as my main virtual machine software. I use it to run old 16-bit applications or applications that don't work properly on my Windows 7 x64 installation. I also occasionally use it as a sandbox.

I use VMWare Player. Mostly to trade with my TF2 alt accounts, but also to test drive files that may or may not have viruses.

I would use VMWare too ... but I haven't used it often in a while, since I haven't had much use to it. Before it used to be that the stupid Nintendo Wi-Fi adapter wouldn't work on anything but XP.... but now I don't need that.

My program of choice for running a virtual environment is VirtualBox. I'll just use it for messing around with different operating systems and web development.
