I just joined, and noticed a odd lack of 3DS games on the wiki, so why not start?

I'm somewhat terrible at this myself, so I'll just suggest some interesting/suspicious things.

Might as well start off with the flagship of 3DS's release, Super Mario 3D Land.
First, who here knows about the ghost in World 4? (Go search it if you don't, I'll wait.)

Well, maybe this is just me being dumb, but every time something like this happens in a 3D Mario game (Hanged Shadow in Luigi's Mansion, Hell Valley Tree in Galaxy...) the game in question often has a plethora of unused things. (That and it'd be nice to see the ghost without the fog.)

So uh..
Yeah.
3DS games need to be looked at.

Because we don't know how to properly look into them. The 3DS is so new that I think most people would be unfamiliar with how the games store their data.

I can look into build dates, possibly debug menu texts, but I'm not too familiar with the 3DS in general.

CORRECTIONS: The Hell Valley people are from Galaxy 2, not Galaxy. Also, the hanged shadow is more of a glitch.

3DS still doesn't have proper emulators or hacks yet, so it's difficult to start probing into what's used or not. I assume people have been able to decrypt the cartridges, so at least you could do static analysis and find things that are obviously unused, but that can only get you so far.

I was actually interested in looking into 3DS games a little while ago, but I couldn't find anywhere when people have even talked about decrypting the ROM's that are floating about.

I would love to have a look at some of games when we can look into them though. Manly SM3DLand, MK7 and NSMB2 since they seem to be based on engines that was created for the Wii.

3DS is just gonna have to wait. I'm not about to allow a bunch of pages with crappy JPEG "screenshots" and baseless speculation because we can't even dig into the games' filesystems yet. There are still plenty of games for older systems left to investigate.

I just looked up the ghost in World 4. That's hardly worth starting a page for.

Its not even possible to get hold of any roms so its actually its quite unknown how to get into them. And theres older games we can't get into as well. Kingdom hearts 1 & 2 (as well as other square Enix Ps2 games) have some kind of annoying file protection which makes the game files seemingly not there no matter what you do.

That ghost is a bit interesting but they have a thing about clean screenshots. There's no way to get one for this game yet so I guess the article will have to wait until a emulator is released.

To answer some questions, there are up-to-date roms on the internet. I came across quite a bit of 3DS Roms (yet it sees they're mostly big name titles), you just need to know where to search (guess I can't say more).

I'm actually very interested to know more about how to decrypt 3DS roms, if only to see the internal list of files: you can find log files with dev comments, and some interesting file names. Emulation can wait.

I need to check some little things:

*Adventure Time 3DS: log files detailing the debug menu?

*Epic Mickey 3DS: A whole world has been cut (more info in the tcrf Content to Expand page). It's not just some baseless speculation since the box art and some pre-release screenhots are featuring it, so its definitely possible we find some unused graphics

We CAN possibly rip it, figure out its format (need to get more experience about that, since it's what's romhacking Playstation1-2-3/GC/Xbox/Wii graphics needs) and display it as a PNG image without needing emulators (since it has been already done with PS3 games)

*In about every other 3DS game (and even PS3 games for that matter, possibly Wii U if someone figures out how to open its proprietary disk format, like when some old LG drives could read Wii disks), you can have some interesting findings just from the file list (txt files, debug/test files you can open with a hex editor and find debug menu text).

So, if anyone could illuminate me about how to see the innards of 3DS games (i.e. decrypt them), I would be extremely grateful, since that would allow me to start the 3DS category (I was the one behind the recent batch of the 100 or so new DS games, by the way).

I would like to know how is the DSi emulation progressing, since that would also help a lot!

Thanks a lot!

PS: If you want to start the 3DS / Vita section so bad, you could always begin with the regional differences. Virtue Last Reward is a good fit and you have the ones listed in tcrf Content to Expand page.
You're welcome.

I wonder why many people say you can't take screenshots without emulators. Heard Big N was more generous this gen about their 3DS Capture Kits, you can see many using them in Youtube.

Regards!

I think DSi emulation has all gone underground so it's hard to say how it's going, and I had another look and I don't think their is any effort put into decrypting 3DS ROM's so far (unless that is progressing underground). I would love to be wrong though.

That's what we are already doing, you can see that with the Mario Kart 7 page TCRF has up.

It must still cost a pretty penny though, the best we can do is see if anyone who owns that and the game we need the screen cap from and see if they could do a favor for TCRF.

I'd rather not have crappy 3DS or WiiU sections dedicated entirely to regional differences, as that's not even our primary focus, but what the hell ever. Some people just have to be OMG FIRST!! I guess.

I'm no expert, but a File explorer is available for 3DS games. Maybe you could use that to check out if there's anything fishy in some game.

EDIT: FFFgsdhfg totally didn't see m64m's post. Sorry.

You know, there are 3DS emulators available. They're just not widely shared and / or popular yet.

...

Try "known hoaxes." Nintendo probably has an emulator as part of the SDK, if you want to go all Bond for it. Beyond that, you're going to wait for us to have a better understanding of the hardware.

So, yeah, unless you are Secret Agent Extraordinaire, there aren't any 3DS emulators available to you.

Considering someone JUST figured out how to run code on a real 3DS (and even then, there is no evidence beyond a single blurry photo), I would be amazed to see a working 3DS emulator, especially one that can run commercial games.

Each site offering a Nintendo 3DS emulator looks fake. The one I explored most required you to go through those survey things, where they charge money to your phone before you can downloading anything. This is called a scam.

The format of Ocarina of Time 3D has been decrypted. Looks like there's some leftover models from the original game.
