There is a Nintendo DS game called "A Witch Tale" that has cutscenes stored as data, including text on a black BG.
Some of this text is untranslated from Japanese in the English edition, and it seems different.

Context: Random bulletin by a lady in the furthermost town from the actual scene of topic.
Background: There is a river called Dead River, and there is a curse at play on the river; there is a ferryman who is supposedly cursed, or the river is cursed, or both (lots of stuff that is cursed in this game), and the player will "clear" the curse by showing a certain item to the ferryman.

I can't figure out the grammar of this sentence. I don't understand if the river is waiting for someone, or whether the lady is waiting, or if the lady ponders whether the person who clears the curse is waiting for something, or whether the curse clearer in this sentence is actually a thing or a person, and what is the role of the "kawa" at the end of the sentence. Is it a concatenation of two particles, "ka" and "wa", or does it mean a river, or something else? Can someone please explain how this sentence works.

Gonna do some disassembly, then try to make this a working sentence:
Norowareshi Dead River - the accursed Dead River
imanao - yet still/even still
noroi wo tokumono machiwabiru kawa - the curse waits impatiently for a special thing (at the river)/(I wonder?).

At the accursed Dead River,
the foul magic that taints
the water lies in wait,
thirsting for an offering.

That's a nice, loose translation assuming that her "kawa" is the river. If that makes sense in context, I'd run with it. :o

I wasn't offering a poem, I was offering a translation that, based on the context given and the text's reading, both makes sense and is readable without accounting for things like character limits or text box sizes. Due to the extreme ambiguity in the word placement (is "kawa" on a newline because it's over the character limit and supposed to be a particle, or is it on a newline because it's a seperate word?), you have to take the risk and interpret the text as well as you are able, regardless of the author's hazy intent, which means making decisions that some would regard as "taking liberties with the text."

All of that said, I did a quick google search and I found this:

(...)ใ€Œๅ‘ชใ‚ใ‚Œใ—ใƒ‡ใƒƒใƒ‰ใƒชใƒใƒผใ€ไปŠใชใŠๅ‘ชใ„ใ‚’่งฃใ่€…ๅพ…ใกใ‚ใณใ‚‹ๅทใ€(...)

A Japanese gamer interpreted that "kawa" as "ๅท", solving the ambiguity to some degree. Make of that what you will.

No, I sought the understanding of how the sentence is constructed and on its grammatical sense.

Glitterberri helped with this one at IRC.
I am now satisfied with the explanation that the paragraph consists of two sentences:

"The accursed Dead River... It is a river that still desperately awaits for the one who clears the curse."

I had not considered this possibility. What you quoted, also shows a comma after the river name, effectively for the same purpose.

In any case, thank you for your effort.

I understand. Just, as a translator -- and in a thread called "Any Japanese text need translating?" -- there's a bit of a natural compulsion to look at the words and translate. Little nuggets of dialogue are like puzzles that beg to be solved.

(Also, I apologize for being a little bit grumpy in my response. It's been a long month, and the way I responded seems a lot harsher than it needs to be, and I'm really sorry about that. D: )

A friend of mine is working on a level editor for Zelda: Minish Cap.



This was found mixed in with some overworld tiles. The four icons on the left appear to be unused. All of the graphics in this image are in the wrong palette. The faces could be early/placeholder graphics for Link's Minish form. The three smiling faces would match Link's three actions: walking, swimming, rolling. The sad face matches drowning, or getting hit by an enemy. I have no idea about the 2.

Most likely, these are abbreviations for something. They're not empty space; that would be abbreviated with ใ‚, ใ‚ข, or ็ฉบ.

Are these placeholders for animated graphics? It would be a lot easier to tell what they're supposed to be if that's the case.

It's a name entry screen with kanji. The left side is the typical alphabetical characters, doubling as the indicator for the initial mora of the kanji on the right.

Actually, one of them is. I'm not sure about the rest.



This is taken from the level editor. The tree here has an animated top portion that disappears when you run into it (like the ones in A Link to the Past). ๅŠ› makes sense here. I'll ask if the other symbols show up elsewhere in the editor.

So where do I beginโ€ฆ..
I was digging around the files for the NDS game 9 hours 9 persons 9 doors and I was able to get the game to load test menus and debug stuff. The problem is, of course, they are mostly in Japanese. I have already drafted a page that I will be putting on TCRF about what I found but I think it would be really cool to add translations of what is said on those test menus.
Below are the 4 things that need to be translated. One of them is an image and the other three are videos.

This might be the easiest video to translate. The cutscene of this video isnโ€™t used by the Japanese version or North American version of the game. It is, however, used for the demo version of the game listed HERE. I would assume that the text, when translated to English, is equivalent to the text found on that demo page although I donโ€™t know for sure. I am not aware of a Japanese demo of the game.

I kind of feel like a jackass for posting so much material in one post but Iโ€™m very curious to what all the text says. If there is something I can do to make the translation process easier, let me know.

I'm trying to do a bit of comparison work on the Fire Hawk: Thexder the Second Conctact Translation; anyone mind helping me out?

English, Sierra
"We managed to dispatch several units into Nediam before the Red Sphere blocked the entrance".

English fan translation, MSX2
"Some got through before Mr. Red came."
(unlike Sierra, the MSX2 translators didn't work around the limited dialogue box space. this propably hurt the translation very badly.)

Japanese, MSX2 Version

Credit to GMIX6809 for that snipping. don't have BlueMSX Set up so i can't grab it myself, and i don't even know where i'd start on typing that out myself.

Some Notes:
-The Red Sphere (or 'Mr. Red' as the MSX2 Fan Translation dubs it) is the first stage's boss.
-Nediam is the asteroid the game is set on.
