Since we needed more things to post about!

More accurately, the concept and story of the pokemon games!

So the pokemon games are obviously extremely popular as is evident in sales and the fact that the series has been going on for quite some time. I think arguably a big appeal for the games is that you can just raise whatever pokemons you want to fight for you and that the gameplay is really solid. But the story in the main series of games have mostly been the same in every generation with the exception of a few odd titles such as colosseum and XD: gale of darkness. But hey, if it ain't broken, don't fix it, right?

Yet with the latest games (B&W2 does not count as it it's not out just yet) in the series they actually did go ahead and mix up the story a bit. The story still have the same major plot points such as getting the eight gym badges and challenging the elite four, not to mention, fighting off an evil organization. But the path through it all was quite different with a bit more lively characters and a bit more linear railroaded approach. It was an interesting spin on the concept, though, in my view a bit timid; They could have gone further with changing it up.

But somewhere down the line though, I wonder if the focus was really put in the right place. The story has never really been very interesting for me in the main pokemon games. Yes I can related to it and it was fun to see, but it was hardly what drew me on to keep playing. Yet, it was exactly the other way around when I played the pokemon mystery dungeon games.

The story had shifted focus and was now on the pokemons themselves and it takes place in a land where humans are extremely rare (Or something.) But that was not all, with this change (and most likely change in writers) the characters seemed to get more... character! I could related more to the side kick in either of the PMD games then any other in the whole franchise, but not only that, the worlds where full of other interesting characters.

I'll admit, I never played much past where the main chunk of the story ended in either of the game, but what drove me to play that far was certainly the story! My biggest question after thinking about it all is: Why don't we have this level of character depth in the main series? And why is there almost no depth in story?

So, what are your thoughts on the subject?
(Does not have to be a direct response)

The story for Pokémon Black/White is actually quite thought-provoking. I'm sure parts of it will just sail over the heads of the younger kids who play the game (especially the kind who like to mash A to skip all dialogue), which is interesting considering that's a huge part of the demographic. For a children's game, it brings up a lot of philosophical questions, such as what makes something right or wrong. Even the two legendary Pokémon represent abstract concepts, with one being "truth" and the other "ideals". One line of dialogue that sticks out to me in particular (probably because it's the most recent one I re-encountered) comes from the two little kids running in a circle in the daycare. To paraphrase, the little boy says "Am I chasing him, or is he chasing me? As we change our perspective, the reality changes." That's certainly something to think on.

Most of the people that I know absolutely hated the storyline of B/W, but I found it to be the first one with a legitimately good story, mostly for these reasons. Every time I encountered N, I never felt like he was a villain. In fact, I felt as though I was a jailer and actually felt a little bad for my Pokémon (even though they're just bits of data in a game cartridge). This character made me completely rethink everything that I knew about Pokémon and that there are always two sides to every story, just like in real life.

Much better than, "We're Team Rocket! We're going to steal your Pokémon! Why? Because we're EEEEVILLLLLLL!"

Actually there are hints that there were people (a long time ago) which gives the idea that you aren't sent to another dimension but a post-apocalyptic future where all the humans have died out (or at least that's my idea).
Personally i think in order to make a better Pokemon game they need to stop targeting little children and base one or two of the games on the manga's. There's a cool new manga called Pokemon Reburst which has Strange gems that kinda act like pokeballs (in the fact that they store Pokemon) that allow the owner to 'Burst' (which is essentially temporarily fuse with the Pokemon).

The first generation had a novel idea, and executed it pretty well... as long as you stuffed the Pikachu in the computer at the first opportunity (not like it's great against Brock's Onix anyway). The player gets an invitation from Professor Oak to travel the world researching Pokémon, and while he's at it, he might as well compete in the Pokémon League. The game didn't really have any overarching story or mythical legends; it was just about one kid's journey and the many adventures he had along the way.

Gold and Silver started to shake things up a bit, complete with a terrible start to the story. "Could you go talk to my friend Mr. Pokémon? What, Professor Oak was there!? This is amazing! You could become the new Champion! Go talk to your mom first, though." Tell me again why I'm supposed to care about the Pokémon League? Explain to me more thoroughly why I have to wander aimlessly from town to town? It did introduce some interesting story elements however, like the reformed Team Rocket, and it was nice to see how Kanto had changed in the three years since the first games.

Ruby and Sapphire were pretty good, though I felt the emphasis on "legendary Pokémon" was excessive. To be fair, the only Hoenn game I've played is Emerald, and I understand that's quite a bit different in terms of the "weather trio" as far as the story goes. The game itself was very nice, though. You start out as cargo in a truck that's apparently driving across the ocean to Littleroot Town, so it's like a fresh beginning and you get into the action right away. Along the way you encounter the shenanigans of Team Aqua and/or Team Magma, which provides some focus to keep moving instead of just finding Gyms to get Badges from. The game was quite long compared to its predecessors, and I felt it did a pretty good job of representing what a Pokémon game could be.

I haven't played any of the DS games, and I'm not sure I want to. Pokémon designs are becoming more and more complex, new varieties are being added at an arbitrarily high rate, and the "legendary" gimmick has gone so far through the roof that now God himself is a Pokémon. If I were to take a guess, would it be correct to say that the player gets to save the world now? What ever happened to helping a geezer with his research and battling in a regional competition?

I'm on a bit of a different quest at the moment.

See, I decided I wanted to start a game of LeafGreen with Steven's Beldum as my starting Pokémon, right? So I found a Ditto in the Desert Underpass in Emerald, made a Beldum egg (which will belong to the trainer when it hatches; never disobeying), completed Celio's network machine in FireRed, brought the egg over, then started a new game in LeafGreen and attempted to trade the egg there. Oops, can't trade eggs without the National Pokédex.

So I'm currently on a hacking spree. I know there are tools out there already to modify your Pokémon save data for various games, but I want to take it a step further. Chiefly a trading utility, it can help me get that egg over to LeafGreen as well as provide trades between, for instance, Gold/Silver and Ruby/Sapphire. So that's what I'll be up to until further notice.

In Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, yes, you essentially save the world by stopping an evil organization from controlling time/space, but it's the same as preventing the oceans from drying up or flooding the land in Ruby/Sapphire. Black and White take a step back from this, as the main conflict you run into is almost like the PETA of Pokémon: they want Pokémon to be free from the unethical abuse suffered under the control of humans. The legendary Pokémon you end up chasing in the end isn't godly or anything, and can't destroy the world if unleashed.

I recommend reading over my first post (again?). If it sounds interesting to you, I recommend giving Black/White a shot.

Hrm. Sounds like Ruby and Sapphire are more gloom and doom than Emerald, then. The story I saw was Groudon and Kyoger being awakened by the bad guys, they had a brief bout of fisticuffs, I went to the Sky Pillar to pick up Rayquaza and everything was fine and dandy. It all happened over the span of about 10 minutes, and I didn't come away with the idea that the whole game was leading up to it; just that it was a little something on the side.

Part of that may be my fault, though. I spent a lot of my quest working towards a Bellossom that knew Razor Leaf.

Yes. Arceus the god of Pokemon!

Humans are said to be evolve from pokemon, yet we don't lay eggs like they do. O.o

Humans, I don't know. But jet cars are

I'm posting this because while this is a shiny Genesect that knows Extremespeed that is to be featured in an anime movie, it seems really odd that they'd give it a different, distinct and named form like this.

The distribution above too is apparently just a normal Genesect, without even Extremespeed. It's weird.

But eh, probably it IS a movie thing, disappointingly.

Well, F-Zero is made by Nintendo so it wouldn't be that surprising. They have been running out of ideas when it comes to Pokemon designs for ages now. I really don't want to know what the new Pokemon will look like when they are inevitably made.

Yeah, I'm actually kinda sick of hearing this too. Anyone who keeps complaining about pokemon designs need to get their nostalgia glasses off.

Of course design and art staff changes will change how the mons' are made over time, but even so I can still stand here and say that there monsters I like and hate in every new addition. Yes, I do think some batches are better then others too, but proclaiming that everything new is terrible seems kinda ignorant to me. Personally, I like the batch from gen 3 and 2 the most.

Actually, I think they've produced some really clever designs in later gens especially with Gen V. I think the scene change to America from Japan helped inject a lot of fresh ideas there....

Personally I'm just glad they keep introducing new turtle pokemon :3
