EDIT: Pretend this is an embed till I can fix it.

"This 8-bit-style crossover title stars the Blue Bomber and a slew of retro-ized SF mainstays acting as stand-in Robot Masters; beat them, acquire their powers and tackle the next amazingly re-imagined boss."

Originating as a pet project by Singapore fan Seow Zong Hui, he approached Capcom's Christian Svensson with the idea and this is the result.

Street Fighter X Mega Man is a free title to start off Mega Man's 25th anniversary, officially funded, tested, legally cleared and as you can see marketed by Capcom, with hints that there might actually be something more than just... Xover... during the anniversary year! It'll be playable on Capcom Unity's site on the 17th.

If anything else decent(and hopefully not 8-bit for once) actually is announced on or after the 17th maybe this thread could be for talking about that too.

I don't really care for Street Fighter, and I've only played like 2-3 Mega Man games, but... that looks awesome.

An new NES style megaman game? And it's free? FUCK YEAH! D!
I don't really care about the SF parts at all; This is going to be awesome either way due to gameplay! ´:3

Also, it shows that there is still a fan demand for the series!

The confusing part about this is that Capcom actually backed it (which I ASSUME means it plays well) and is actually releasing it as freeware. It seems extremely strange that they'd suddenly be pulling a surprise like this out of their hats given what they've done recently to the franchise.

Still, come on December 17!

By "PC" I assume they mean Windows? Bummer that Wii isn't on the list. O-:

Yeah, PC release for now. Makes sense. I doubt it's going to have high system requirements anyways (since it is fan-made) but watch it require a dual-core and 2 GB of RAM anyways. Because it's 2012.

Not confusing at all. The game was getting popular, Capcom saw it as a way to make themselves look better if they backed it up themselves, now they are publishing it under their name without having done anything with the game.

Capcom is scum.

According to the guy who created it, he's been working for Capcom (specifics not given) since July or so.

Regardless, considering the amount of free advertising he's getting out of this, I'm not exactly sure this is a bad arrangement, particularly given he went to them, rather than vice versa.

The trailer music already is awesome enough to get this. Really nice, how Capcom did not intervene and cancelled the development due to legal/copyright reasons. Other companies already used their (though rightfully) rights to stop projects in the past. Think Square-Enix and Chrono Trigger: Resurrection.
And about system requirements here, this is quite interesting. Only because a game uses retro-style graphics and "simplistic" gameplay, it doesn't neccessarily means, that it only requires a low-end computer to run perfectly. On the other hand, Capcom and the developers themselves would do not good, if the games had a hard requirement like a quad-core, a 2011 video card and 4 GBs of memory ...
My 2009 medium-range rig is more than enough to play most modern games with upper medium to high details, although AA and AF are turned off entirely (Dishonored is an exception, as this probably does not require too much) usually.

I also don't care to people if someone says "Greedcom" still sucks, because they re-re-re-rereleased their games with minimal gameplay changes and almost never have discounts for their Steam titles. The last game I got from them was Bionic Commando 2009, was very nicely done, developed by GRIN, which is defunct today, sadly. Then there's the Wii Mega Man games, which are not too shabby, either.

You are completely missing the point of why Capcom is scum then because this is far from the reason.

... I'd still like if there was a new Megaman game that didn't try to be a romhack.

But eh, this is a fangame, so it's okay.

I'd say it IS a nice change back from Capcom, honestly. They were pretty aggresive with cancelling things, both canning official games and things built off fan imput. And making pretty questionable decisions on other franchises...

This is hardly enough to redeem them though, but I don't see backing a fangame as something really bad.
Sure, they slap their name in the game, but so what? They were going to be credited for the franchises anyway, and that's what they are claiming, not the development.
And yeah, the author was who went to them. He is the one publishing the game under Capcom's name.

Though still, praising a fangame instead of canning it is nowhere close to change my oppinion on them.

The game is out now!

Though good luck getting it if you try and get it soon after this post. 33.8 MB file, 3 hours left... it's not gonna download for me right now.

If they're tracking the downloads to see the popularity, will they count the 50 times each person tries to download it and fails due to the other people trying to download it 50 times?

Here's a tiny Street Fighter x Megaman minireview before I head off to do finals: The soundtrack is amazing. Like, holy shit, I want that soundtrack all the time forever. And good on Capcom for helping a fangame actually get some exposure.

Next time they should actually give them some game design pointers, though. The stage design is flat-out balls, and some of the enemies are ridiculously stupid. I also don't recall Megaman games A: putting you in a situation where you cannot react to a hazard without due warning, or B: severely punishing you for exploring. Dhalsim's stage does both.

Related to Dhalsim's stage: the annoying flying purple dudes that teleport and shit out 8 projectiles? I did not need three of them in one fucking room, thank you very much.

Oh, 9 does this. Wily 3, second ascent, if you aren't aware you're going to get flung right into spikes at the end. It's avoidable but odds are you're gonna die your first or second time there. More of a "Once you know how to get past it, it's easy" thing and not a "You're screwed" thing.

(The solution, of course, is to use the most broken (and therefore awesome) shield weapon in the series; Jewel Satellite.)

Yeah, there's definitely some issues in this that scream "fan game", but for what it is, it's pretty neat.

I have an issue with some of the physics. They don't quite seem to have the Mega Man physics down quite well yet. And also, one of Chun-Li's attacks just comes off like utter crap in the physics department (the jump-split attack flip is terrible and looks like it was programmed in by someone from Color Dreams. x___x)

More as I play it, but it's neat so far. Just has issues.

I'm more amazed that a fan developer went to the franchise owner instead of cowering in a corner behind internet anonymity hoping they wouldn't get sued than Capcom actually making it an official, published title.

Grab the OST by A_Rival.

A_Rival rules so supporting him would be pretty rad.
