Surprised I don't see a topic on this here yet. Nintendo is selling a redesigned model of the Wii called the Wii mini. It is a smaller design, with a catch. According to IGN, this model has no internet capabilities. It also doesn't support playing gamecube games but this was a feature takes out of Wiis a while ago. Besides, if you really wanted to play GC games today you could pick up a GC system and a game for under the price of any new system. I'm not buying it because I already have a Wii but I like the way this system looks. Any thoughts?

It's horrible

And stupid

And horrible

And confusing to people that still don't know what the fuck a Wii U is (which there is plenty of)

Specially on the last one: way to drive your own audience from your main product.

Also, what's the point of any of it? Like, it's a home console, the Wii already IS small enough. The Wii sold like crazy too, so while I guess the $100 price is okay for someone wanting to buy another new one for some reason it's not like more than ten people are going to. Specially with, you know, your new console?

It's like the GBA Micro, except even that one made sense out of the fact that it's a handheld. The small price, small size and other things of convenience were more relevant because the whole concept of a handheld relies on convenience.

And I agree about the no internet. What? Wasn't the internet thing one of the important things of the Wii?
I'm going to pressume that it doesn't even do Wiiware.

That is just stupid. And who cares about it being compatible with loads of wii titles. My old Wii can play them fine (in fact I've hacked it to play any game i want when i want) so i don't see anyone buying them anytime soon. It reminds me of when Sony thought Psp's with no umd slot was a good idea.

What I can agree with you guys most on is that this redesign will cause confusion between the Wii and Wii U. It probably isn't best to market both these products at the same time because of the names.

As for the Wii mini specifically, the way I see it is that Nintendo is trying to rip out everything except the hardware to play Wii games to make the product cheaper. Considering most people already have a Wii, this product would be intended for people who were too cheap to buy a Wii or were living under a rock for the past 6 years and just learned about the Wii's existence. For the second group, these people probably aren't intending to play games for countless hours so they probably wouldn't care to buy a Wii U for such games even if they knew what the difference between a Wii and Wii U was.

At least that is what I think Nintendo is thinking...

I just Googled "Wii" and found that the bundle that contains a Wii and New Super Mario Bros. Wii costs $150. The Wii Mini costs $100 alone.

Already, it isn't saving anyone a significant amount of money. Stripping it of features such as the ability to buy games on the online store and playing Gamecube games (which significantly slashes the game library) does not make it a clever choice.

Combined with the fact the Wii U just came out and they did such a horrible job of advertising it that people think the Wii U is just the controller, Nintendo is really just cashing in on clueless individuals instead of actually doing something useful.

I'm really tempted to change the title of this thread to "Another Wiidesign".

Wii bundle price

For what it's worth, a quick search shows Best Buy offering it at $119 with the usual Wii Sports + Wii Sports Resort.

I don't get it.

As far as I'm aware it also lacks a SD card slot.

Hey, at least that means they "fixed" Smash Stack!

Actually, the ability to play Gamecube games has been gone a long time from the Wii - there was a new model released mid 2011 that lacked gamecube support, including GCN controller ports. So nothing new there. Nintendo's been dropping backwards compatibility slowly and steadily amongst all its product lines with each revision as they are always known to do.

The price point is probably to get it over that 'magic' number that makes people impulse buy it. Would be my guess.

See, I've been pondering a portable Wii for a while, and this mini version would be perfect... except I'd be using it mostly for Gamecube games, so. :| (wouldn't be surprised if it could still be hacked to play them, but you'd have to wire in some new ports...) a portable would also need hax to run games off SD cards instead of discs, and that's much easier with older models, especially if this one has removed SD entirely (which seems rather crippling).

Also, it really looks a lot like the slim PS2.

It's a bit of a baffling choice, I have to admit, but there's one application I can imagine it for: traveling. Take it to a hotel, plug it in the TV. Of course, you could do that with a normal Wii, anyway...

Yeah, the regular wii is supremely portable as it is anyway. I used to lug one around in my bag back in my undergrad days for Videogaming evenings and it was not really that noticeable.

Well, except for the wii remotes being constantly knocked and draining all their batteries. ¬_¬

From what I've heard the small Wii is only slated for Canada. Which wouldn't surprise me, let's not forget Japan never got the one without Gamecube support.

I don't get it.

Is it more expensive in Canada, maybe? I know even though CAD and USD are basically at parity now, sometimes things are still cheaper here...

But yeah, I dunno- if it had the internet (how much does that really add to the price) it would make sense, but without it... that's a lot of features missing for no real benefit. I guess I kind of like the design, looks Famicom-ish. (though I've only seen pictures of it from the one angle)

Best Buy Canada has a normal Wii in black (and matching controller) with New SMB Wii and the Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack for fifty dollars more than Wii Mini.

Seeing as I never bought a Wii in the first place and haven't bought a Wii U, I don't think I'm getting a Wii Mini. If anything, I'd get an older used Wii on craigslist for the purpose of dicking around with homebrew.

Canada's prices are a lot more in line with American prices now due to the dollar pretty much being at par. Wii U pricing is the same here as in the States, I believe.

Way too confusing, though. Nintendo's basically saying "Hey, if you're too poor to get a new gaming system for your kids at Christmas, grab this!" I mean, if people sold their Wii a while back and want to pick up a new console... that's fine. But the timing's way off.

Really, the strangest thing about this whole deal is not the form factor, no internet or no gamecube.

It's the why would you make a console Canada only? It just seems odd. Like it's something you'd expect to launch just before christmas worldwide.

And I shall call him... Mini Wii.

But seriously, this is a terrible idea. Hell, the last few times I've been on my Wii, it was just to play GCN games.
