Well, finally. He's been dethroned: http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/24/showbiz/gangnam-style/index.html

It's official. "Bieber Fever" has broken and given way to "Gangnam Style."

Rapper Psy on Saturday edged out the teenage pop star for the distinction of most-watched YouTube video ever, netting more than 806 million views.

Justin Bieber, who was first discovered on YouTube by a talent scout in 2008, had previously held the crown with just under 804 million online visitors.

But the portly South Korean and his four-minute video catapulted to the front with a deluge of viewers, while bringing his signature galloping dance to global recognition.

Clad in a tuxedo and sunglasses, the 34-year-old Psy -- whose real name is Park Jae-sang -- is featured and often flanked by scantily clad women as he dances.

Named for a pricey neighborhood in Seoul, "Gangnam Style" in October snatched the Guinness World Record for the "most liked" YouTube video ever.

Slow news day, perhaps, but I think there's something that can be discussed here. This is a non-English song playing everywhere in the US. I can't think of a time I've heard a non-English song playing so prominently in the US (except perhaps Spanish and even then I can't think of a good example). With the economic rise of China, how long until we start seeing Chinese songs and movies become popular in the US? And India and Brazil?

And for those who have yet to see it, you might as well:

With the age of the internet it was bond to happen. In fact, this might even be the start of global cultural mixing on a level that was never possible before! And possibly, it might even make us all understand each other better.

*sigh* well at least you can dream! :p

Gotta love it.

Eh, it was bound to happen again...in a different language.

People will look back on it in ten years in the same way.

A lot of news posts aren't quite yet sure. They say there's a chance he'll be just another one-hit wonder like Los Del Rio, and there's a chance this may spawn a new era of k-pop in American culture. I personally think it's the former. Anyone care to share their thoughts?

But seriously, this list applies to both:
  • Foreign language (non-English, anyways; and since I'm American and that's the center of the world, it's foreign)
  • Pop song (although Macarena was actually originally a rumba)
  • Has it's own dance moves
  • Became explosively popular
Anything I'm missing?

It sure beats most of the sludge that counts as music over here, at least the Bieber stuff anyway.

Maybe we can have a whole slew of international hits to help bring more varitey to US pop music.
