I think it was the "eat it" "eat it" "eat it" that did it, seeing as how "eat it" can refer to... you know.

To be honest, I doubt the pizza had anything to do with it. I'm pretty sure it was the repeated "Eat it".

The pizza bit was probably just added as sensationalism. "Mere mention of pizza sends robo-Santa into oral sex rage" sounds a lot more exciting than "Repeated use of 'eat it' leads to Santa bot mentioning oral sex". Which is all this was.

All it said was "I don't want to talk about it any more" -- no descriptions, no nothing besides the mere mention. It's blown way out of proportion.

And as usual, HyperHacker is the one to gobble it up and spurt off more anti-Microsoft crap. Big suprise.

In other news, The Register is a crockpot of shit:

Now that it has pulled the plug on its oral-sex-obsessive MSN bot, the firm's spinners have tried to deflect scrutiny of its sloppiness by claiming that the outrage was caused by users.
It isn't "sex obsessive".

Our story of how Santa turned nasty has been picked up by the AP newswire. It means Microsoft's lies over the affair are set to appear in papers and on news channels all over the world.
Bragging about "bringing down the big bad Microsoft".

Here's the whopper that Microsoft spokesman Adam Sohn told AP: "It's not like if you say, 'Hello Santa', he's going to throw inappropriate stuff at you."

Erm, yes it is, Adam. It's pretty much exactly like that. When we innocently asked him to eat something, Santa said: "It's fun to talk about oral sex, but I want to chat about something else."
"Innocently mentioned eating it" does not equate to "Repeated the same phrase 5 times knowing the results". Sorry, you fail. Shut the fuck up.

The slapdash job Microsoft did on the supposedly festive chat agent was revealed when Reg reader Iain's nieces offered Santa some pizza. According to Microsoft the girls were "pushing this thing to make it do things it wasn't supposed to do".
Yeah, right.

When I see proof that it a) goes beyond mentoning it and b) can be triggered unintentionally during what would be considered normal conversation, then maybe. But as it is, this is faulty sensationalist journalism at its finest.

Except the bot did say "oral sex" by itself out of context ... if that's really how it responds to "eat it", then it's really stupid (but what would you expect from Windows Live Santa)

So linking to news articles about a chat bot misbehaving and its owners trying to pass the buck is "gobbling it up and spurting off anti-Microsoft crap"? I'm sorry, what? Did you think I wrote the articles or something?

So you think the kids who found this in the first place knew how it would respond?

Ever think maybe you wouldn't see so much stupidity if you didn't try to twist everything you hear into something stupid? Regardless of the circumstances, MS screwed up by putting/leaving this term in the bot's vocabulary and then tried to pass it off as being the users' fault.

I don't know why I put this here.
The truth of the matter is, if I made that bot I just wouldn't make it possible to get that result, period. If it was made by anyone, I'd still go "Dang, man, what drunk man made it possible for it to say that?" I mean, if it learns, then you gotta cover your arse or you're gonna be making yourself look dumb. For as we all know, user-submitted content opens whatever you're doing up to some very evil things. :p

You leave out the entire possibilty it isn't a learning bot (ala MegaHal or others). I can think of a few conversations that would result in that, if it was the case.

As such, it's mostly impossible to tell if it was "left in on purpose" or just something it picked up by some idiots.

The way the conversation went actually makes me think it was the latter. Enough people say some things, it begins relating oral sex to them (via use), and attributes other phrases to it.

Do not jump to conclusions for what could easily be explained.

If that's the case, their mistake was using a learning bot and not expecting it to pick up inappropriate terms.
