So, my computer's been going off on its own recently. I ran SpeedFan to see just how hot the computer's getting.

165F.

.

Yeah. That's good to know and all, but since there's three different temperatures and I don't know which one is which. I open the computer and I accidentally touch the heatsink and I burn my damn finger on it. So, I get the handvac out and blow air on the heatsink for about 5 minutes. I plug everything back in and run SpeedFan again.

95F.

Yeah; I think I found the problem.

I know shit-all about computer hardware; is the heatsink there to collect heat from the rest of the computer so it doesn't get damaged? And what temperature is a heatsink supposed to be at?

Actually, your stats aren't really that different from most.

Major no-no in using a vacuum cleaner inside of a computer. That's asking for static electricity buildup and as you'll know doubt guess static tends to shock things...you know computer components? That's why they sell anti-static pads for a reason when you're building one up. And yes, you actually have to open up your comp every so often to clean out your computer. Dust tends to clog precious air holes. I mean it's the same as an air filter on a car that needs to be replaced every so often. If it's clogged, the performance drops like a rock.

As for temperature, it varies based on your fan (which I actually don't have, it's heatsink city) and processor setup. If you're setup's about the same as mine, that's actually normal for temperature...and they generally cool down rather quickly on a bootdown then startup so the figures you're getting are about normal. Some CPUs, dual-cores, can be rather hot even with decent fans...which is why there's such a thing as liquid-cooling. A standard CPU in this day and age will typically run anywhere between 45-65 Celsius after being on for a while. This D runs at about 50-60 usually with a fanless 7-inch butterfly heatsink attached to it and it takes a while for it to get that high. 165F is ~60C and a normal boot is about 25-40C which is about what you booted at. You can look at your heat now and it'll likely be around 165F or so again.

As long as your processor isn't cooking at about 70C or higher and your hard drive (use DiskCheckup) isn't above the 50C line or so, you should be fine.

I've overshot this thing to 90C on a whim before, which triggered the auto-shutdown, because I was messing around with the processor (overclocking a D isn't smart). I've also seen comps that were ~200F in processor temp inside a person's comp only to open it up and see mounds of dust caked all over the damned thing. They had cats, that should say enough. It dropped about 70F or so after running for a while and maintained it. This was a Pentium 3 comp. My old P3 comp maintained a level of about 36C but had a 3GHz rated fan on a 1GHz processor.

So that's about all I can tell you...

This is what I get from SpeedFan on mine:

- HD0: 57°C (135°F)
- ACPI: 60°C (140°F)

Pretty damn high apparently (looking at the 40°C "Desired" and 50°C "Warning" settings), but it's been like this for a long time already and didn't cause any problems at all yet

Laptop:

CPU: 59°C (138.2°F)
HDD: 34°C (93.2°F)

I've gotten it up to 90 during times of full-CPU, so I don't think it's that bad.

BMF's computer usually runs between 25°C (77°F) and 30°C (86°F) when idling, though, so...

However, you should use a vacuum cleaner hose to collect the dust you do blow off with compressed air. It will save your lungs and those around you sensitive to dust.

I don't know why I put this here.
My old computer used to hover in the high 80s, up to 90 or so celsius. Not surprisingly, it died as I attempted to put a new heatsink, hitting 90 and then comitting seppuku.

My current rig is running a near-silent super heatsink with quiet fan combo, at 37-39 degrees celsisus with Cool n' Quiet on. With it off...

40-42 degrees Celsius. Of course, my filter is clogged with debris. Should I clean it, it should become even cooler.

Running at full load, it approaches 60 degrees celsisus... in 90 degree weather. In cold weather it can't escape 50 degrees C.

Considering I have an Athlon X2 (dual-core), I think my idle temps are loooooooovely.

(sitting at ~30-31c right now, even with a heater nearby)

My desktop's temp is hovering around 33C at the moment with a few apps open. That's certainly cooler than my laptop gets.

This computer is currently sitting on the floor next to the heating element- not exactly the best place for it to be, is it?

Also, not good for the computer to be sitting on top of carpet, especially if it is a metal case.

BMF linked me to this really nice document on the matter, showing that my CPU's max. operating temperature is actually about 95°C (203°F).

So getting warm isn't a problem... but then again, I have a laptop. They're designed to get hot.

Mine used to idle at around 50°C, but after a BIOS update it dropped to ~34°C.

Keep in mind that the onboard measurement facilities are often inaccurate and may report temperatures that are too low. This is especially the case with motherboards that use a thermal sensor below the CPU to "guess" the CPU temperature. The temperature values displayed by the BIOS have usually a correction value added, to compensate for this problem - but in some cases this correction value may be too low, or the sensor might not be in good contact with the CPU.
It might be improved power management, or maybe this. Just trying to offer some explanations

GIGABYTE G-Power Lite.

If there's one thing I really hate about CompUSA going out of business, it's the fact that nobody else in town carries "specialty" coolers like this.

I think it's my D and possibly the EIST not being set right or something. BIOS is up-to-date but even with a sixty dollar kicker-sink like I have it still can't stay below the 50C line for long and usually is around 60 (which is about normal for a D).

Apparently the C2D run a lot cooler though...

They do, mine idles at 40°C, and rarely reaches 60, I've never done a full load test though. Honestly, kinda worried about my Gfx card in that respect, it's not getting all the power it needs, so who knows what could happen, Dell power supply didn't have the extra cables for it.

Well maybe it's just my processor being a dick then. This fan was designed to do a lot more than your stock and then some.
