I'm just happy that my friend doesn't have to die after losing coverage with Romney's planned repeal of the Affordable Care Act.

Edit: Well, not JUST happy with that. I have a lot of reasons to be happy, of course. But that is likely the biggest.

And it's only going to get bigger, as the ACA really kicks in in a year or two.

Not only that, but it looks like Maryland, Maine, and Washington state legalized gay marriage by referendum. Minnesota also might have rejected a constitutional ban on gay marriage.

So glad Obama won.

I still think the electoral college system is stupid (I'm not American so it makes no sense to me), but so glad he won.

Laconic history lesson: It's partly compromise to get all thirteen states to join the union, and partly obfuscation to prevent the less-educated (by 1770 standards) from having too much influence.

Oh my god. I love you for showing me this because this is pretty much the best thing I've seen all day.

Also, huh. Didn't know that's how the electoral college came to be, but somehow I'm not surprised by that

Well it certainly stopped the less-educated (by 2012 standards) from electing more idiots to office!

I think I remember reading this!

I do kinda wonder why they still have it, though...

The constitution is very resistant to change (you need 2/3s of the states to sign off on any amendment), so barring something catastrophic, it's unlikely to change.

On the other hand, more states moving towards proportional representation (instead of winner-takes-all) will make the electoral college results much closer to the popular vote.

Or more states could sign off on the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact and we could have a de facto popular vote~

Ahh, that makes sense, then. Thanks!

I'm surprised this hasn't been posted yet because it's really hilarious -- white people mourning Romney.

Am I twisted for finding this extremely enjoyable?

Do we get reactions like this every election? Or is this a first?

Things not as funny: Business owners doing whatever they can to avoid paying for their employees' medical, as well as firing people they suspect voted for Obama.

Isn't that like, blatantly illegal?

I don't know much of US laws, but I remember a person's political ideologies being one of the protected by law things businesses are forbidden to mess with on levels like that

Apparently, you can get fired for political affiliation, if it's not within the company's interest.

A few states do have lifestyle discrimination laws, meaning that off-duty activities cannot be the reason for your firing, as long as said activity is legal in the U.S.

The U.S. law also has federal protections for gender, ethnicities, races, religions, and nationalities, but not sexual minorities.

Oh. I really thought political affiliation was included there. I'm pretty sure it is in other countries, where such information is classified as sensible data and stuff. (And sexuality, but I know better than to assume that happens in the US)
