Well, he is doing a pretty good job at it, then.

Well, that was amusing. Thanks for sharing it, Xkeeper. So I am BOTH Noob Irdoh AND Goemon now? Nice. Actually, I am DarkKobold too, and I'm adelikat as well but only on weekends. See, I just keep on changing my wig like Roger from American Dad, but the truth is that 75% of the accounts on tasvideos are me in disguise, and the remaining 25% are my relatives.

Seriously now.

The only time I tried to go back to tasvideos was when I created an easily recognizable "newneko" account to offer my help with the encodes of the old movies, but that was it. The fact that Goemon used my same password only makes me think even more that someone with database access created (or altered) that account to use it as forged evidence against me; despite the fact that he was the one who posted that "finding", I don't think it was adelikat himself. As I already stated, I have nothing against him, and I believe he's honest, at least; his actions against me are justified by the fact that I haven't really be nice towards him, I deserved my ban, and I can't agrue with that. DarkKobold, on the other hand, hates me beyond any level for no real reason since I never attacked him personally until he decided I was his second worst enemy (since Xkeeper is the first, apparently), and even then, I only posted a couple of insults in this very thread, so it's not like I live to destroy his life.

When I really want to create an alt account on some website I don't use free cheap proxies and random email addresses (yes, you can see that if you look at the metadata of any of the files uploaded on archive.org by noob irdoh, he used a disposable email address, so I guess he used one on tasvideos too, too bad will never know that since it was changed by the staff), but I do my homework right, I use a secure unlisted proxy from an unsuspected country (such as Spain) and a legit-looking email address (such as name.surname@yahoo.es). Oh, and I change my user_agent too, obviously. Next thing they'll say is that Noob Irdoh used an Italian version of Firefox 1.0.7 (or not, doing that would require them to be able to read logs).

I created perfect alt accounts on several forums so I know what to do when I want to stay in the shadows. I bet I would easily be able to create one on tasvideos and have him advance in ranks until he's a judge or something, but seriously, I cba to do that. I prefer to use my time for constructive things, I leave these games to DarkKobold and his friends (assuming he has any of them).

Would they have gotten the message anyway?

Thanks, Bisqwit! It just sorta came off the top of my head. Still the chance to use it though if we go through with it!

Even if it sounds baseball-ish, if it's done just right, it shouldn't matter too much.

I've gotta voice my support for Superplay Theater. "Superplay" is especially appropriate. It's unique enough and gives off that retro gaming vibe without sounding forced.

I just read this whole thread. I haven't looked at TAS in years, it's disappointing to see how broken of a community it's become. It's such a niche interest that there really ought to be a decent alternative, and I hope someone steps up to the challenge. I have only recently begun to seriously learn about web development, specifically programming and web design. I have a big interest in UI. I'm interested in helping, though I probably don't have much to offer.

Otherwise, paulguy pretty much sums the points I would like to see in a TAS alternative site:

It'd make sense that they could have like, the "best" one, then have other notable ones that are just amusing for some reason, like those family feud ones where people put in complete nonsense. I'm sure similarly amusing things apply to other games. Also it would make sense to have different methods too. Like, completely humanly possible runs, TAS runs without exploits and TAS runs with exploits, or TAS runs that only use certain exploits. Like, sure, people can beat super mario 64 with getting like no stars, but someone might want to see an all stars run or minimum stars required to beat it legitimately or something.

The occasional person might think the title refers to sports, but they'd quickly see otherwise when they looked at the site.

My idea for a speedrun site was to just basically be a database of videos. For each video you'd have fields:

  • Which game (obviously), platform, and version

  • Links to the video on Youtube, archive.org, torrents and wherever else it's available

  • Play length (by input length and by in-game timer, if available)

  • Whether it's TAS or realtime

  • Rating (user votes)

  • Goal

  • Authors and all the usual stuff you'd have for a video

You would be able to define multiple goals for each game (e.g. warpless, 100%, fastest completion, glitched) - each would list its rules, and anyone could define a new goal for their run. Users would be able to sort by whatever fields they like, so finding the fastest video would be a simple sort by play length, while some might want the most entertaining (sort by rating) or newest.

To me this seems like the most sensible system - just catalog the videos and raw data and let users decide what they want to see. None of this obsolescence nonsense; if you want the best time, sort by length and there you go.

So TASVideos rolled out their newest and greatest feature!

AVGN categories. For runs of games that got reviewed by the Angry Asshat Who Sucks At Games

Someone posted dissent and of course halfway into the thread (after someone else agrees):

PewDieFan24(new user)? Nice name and your 1 post count. If I was an idiot, I would have said that you were an alt-account created by the OP for the sole purpose of spamming this site. But that would be ridiculous, huh?

What next, are they going to suggest it was me?

They locked the topic right as I was going to post.

Should've expected as much, a bunch of dissenting remarks in that thread after all, and we can't have that.

Oh wait, they gave a reason?

... What.

No, damn it, the proper reply to off-topic remarks is to delete them, not lock the thread and stop the entire discussion flat.

To be honest, locking a topic suddenly, then providing a reason as off-base as that gives me the assumption that they don't want anyone talking about it.

Recreating locked topics shortly after they're locked is typically considered a Very Bad Thing™, and for good reason.

But when you lock a topic for reasons not even related to its original discussion points, someone else would have to risk violating that taboo to talk about the subject again, even though it might very well still be kosher!

Which leads to the assumptions that it's really just false reasons and that they want to stifle discussions that say negative things towards things they do.

Also, CSS sucks.

Personally, I'd ditch realtime runs as they're kind of a whole different thing.
I'd think tag-like categories are fine, there clearly should be a difference between "beats the game the intended way" and "teleports to the middle of the ending", or even for doing some odd challenge or being in a situation impossible to reach in-game.
The idea is to categorize runs that are intended to show stuff rather than COMPETITIVE FRAME VIDEO GAMERS.
Categorizing them in a way that clearly differenciates "routes" and shows similar tricks done in other videos in that category would be best.

Along the goal, there should also obviously be comments for the rest of what goes on. Particularly for sub-goals, or detailing particular glitches and skips.

For example, in a Kirby's Adventure boss run, the fastest way is to get the UFO at the third boss, but with the Ball at the second you can get a much more impressive and just a tiny bit slower run. And cheating the Sword in for the begining would hardly be the fastest but it'd look cool, or a run beating with Ball even bosses you aren't supposed to.

Because I'd jump on that project.

If I had infinite free time, one of the projects I would do would be a redesign of TASVideos from scratch. (Really.) Even before I gave out the site, I was hoping to get into doing it for a year or two.
I like the wiki + movie archive thing, but based on all the past experience I would probably do bits a thing differently, especially on the backend side. I don't really have a completely fleshed-out redesign idea though.

The reason why I am no longer doing a thing for TASVideos is that considering the finite amount of time and energy I have at my disposal, and that I was (correctly) expecting things that occupy both to be increasing in the near future, I really need to prioritize my time and attachments, and in that process TASVideos was one of the first things to go. I am still not using my time optimally; extremely far from it, but I'm quite happy with one less liability.

That's definitely what I had in mind. I've seen some interesting TAS goals like "fastest crash", as well as just adding new goals or rules to the game, like "fastest to collect every coin in world 1" or "beat the game with the lowest possible score". I'd want to encourage these kinds of new ideas alongside the traditional "get to the ending as fast as possible" and "beat everything as fast as possible" runs.
As I see it though, "TAS" would be just another tag/category. I guess there's somewhat of a divide between the communities, though.

Also, embedded html5 video players with the ability to overlay user comments (via <track> tag) plz.

If you're gonna make this then I have but one suggestion.

Promote GOOD run-comments, trying to understand what is happening in a tasvideos run is pure hell sometimes, and the comments are plastered all over the place and between old and new runs and what not.

Even better, promote use of YouTube and annotations or similar systems, suddenly it would be SIMPLE to actually follow what is happening in the run.

Just my 2 cents.

Or do what SDA does and allow submissions with multiple audio tracks. I've watched quite a few speedruns simply because it had a commentary on a different track. But, y'know, try and get some good quality commentary. I listened to a Mega Man 6 run where every time he was talking about Flame Man, he just made racist comments. Not amusing.
