I've got a holographic copy of Zelda Majora's Mask that crashes after 20-30 minutes of play. After reading about the crash debugger, i figured i'd dig it out again, let it burn, and kick it into the debugger to see if i could divine anything useful.

I ended up getting a variant of the apparantly rare HUNGUP screen; Sadly the image quality isn't very good. This is the only screen of the debugger my camera couldn't capture fairly clearly, presumably because of it being mostly black with a daub of white text. I opted to transcribe it by hand in addition to the screencap below...

RCP IS HUNG UP!!
Oh! MY GOD!!

Anyone have any idea what this means, or if it would be of use to the wiki at all? i assume 'RCP' refers to the Reality Co-Processor, in which case the Debugger's exclamation would be quite justified.

Most likely, your cartridge needs to be cleaned. It might also be a problem with some other component of your N64, though that seems unlikely.

If it's not a problem with the cartridge or the N64, then it's definitely worth investigation. A copy of your save file would be great, if you or someone you know has the equipment to do that.

Well I have no idea if this is wiki material and I have no idea what it means. The only thing I want to mention is that the error code/text above seems legit. Quickly checking out the debug rom for MM, since it is uncompressed, we can find this text around 0xC88DEC as:

RCP iÿs HUNG UïP!!/ƒOh! ýMY GOD

I’ll leave it to others to figure this out but that is my 2 cents.

I assume it's a issue with the cartridge, as it's the only game i have that crashes like this (aside from my copy of Banjo-Tooie IIRC). i'm going with the dusty/dirty cart theory, though.

I was playing Blast Corps fine earlier without issue, and my Goldeneye cart works well (though i'm a bit rusty myself).

That's a thread fault. The first pointer is the thread address (or message queue? should be thread), the second the function it's calling, the third the current address which is most likely right after a JAL or branch.

You get this one on a couple conditions; DMA full, IO full, possibly broke or DMA busy depending at when and what was being called. Corrupted or inaccessible data is the cause, but you'd have to check the flags to know which. Since WROMs basically don't fail unless you do something really bizare to them, you probably just need to clean the cart connector so it can get a good read.

Different games ID their threads differently, and short of disassembling it (which I'm too lazy to do) you wouldn't know which one it is. IDs are only for programmer reference. Most obvious culprit would be the SP manager, but it can be anything that would test its state.

I've seen something similar to this in Ocarina of Time

I got it to appear by fiddling with the cartridge to make the game crash and then enter the debug code.

Yeah that message always popped up in OoT whenever I played around with the debug menu.

The crash screen is well known; the only interesting part is that the game reliably crashes, and that's probably just a hardware issue.

The reply is legit. I've seen it many, many times when I've crashed OoT, adn RCP does indeed refer to the Reality Coprocessor.

I LOVE YOU!
