Well first, it started with me watching this half-hour long video about a similar game released on XBLIG, called Smooth Operators.

Then, from watching the end of that video, I found Corporation Inc. on Kongregate, which is what Smooth Operators was based on.

However, it all ultimately lead back to "Man, I really want to play Sim Tower again", so that's what I've been doing lately.

Well, kinda. I'm actually playing Yoot Tower (the SEGA-published sequel to Sim Tower), because of me remembering that it was a million times better (though I couldn't remember why).

So far, I've built two towers; one was me dusting the cobwebs out of my head, and the second was me starting over with what I learned. I still have yet to achieve four stars though.

Anyone else play this game, or used to play it?

My dad and I played Sim Tower so many years ago holy shit. Good times.

(Sim Farm was also up there on the "this is so awesome" list.)

I remember SimFarm, mainly because my copy had some of the art upside down. Dunno if it's copy protection or not

Hmm... I've never played Sim Farm, but I might have it kicking around here somewhere.

At some point in history, I got a huge Sim Games Megapack thing that had all of the Sim games in it (including the Sim Tower that I have now), even weird ones like Sim Tunes. So I have two copies of Streets, and SC2k.

Edit: Nope, no Sim Farm (unless it's on the Sim City Classic CD or something), but I do have Sim Isle. That's what I must've been thinking of.

SimIsle was neat, but a little hard to learn when I played it.

I never knew there were so many different Sim games.

The only ones I knew of when I was a little kid was Sim Town (eh) and Sim Ant (woo!).

SimIsle was indeed neat and indeed difficult, but it was also buggy as hell and crashed a lot.

Man. Sim Tower would've been the 60mhz Pentium I got to use so long ago. There was some reason it used Windows 3.11 instead of Windows 95, I think stability.

Can't imagine stability being a huge reason. 95 was designed to run on a 386SX at I believe 12 MHz (which was a cut-down 386DX with only a 24-bit address bus instead of the full 32) with 4 MB of RAM. The OEM probably did it to save money.

I do remember once having an AMD K6 at 233 MHz with 32 MB of RAM that shipped with Windows 95. I'm pretty sure 98 was out by then.

So I got to experimenting in Corporation, Inc. I wanted to see how fast I could learn the secret to world domination on Hard mode. The answer? Uh... I guess it starts at 8am on Day 0, so... 8 days, 5 hours, 8 minutes!

I probably could have finished it up on Day 7, but it's a lot of clicking to assign so many employees. My money was coming in so fast I probably could have filled up all 120 floors before midnight rolled around.

Early game on Hard mode really makes you focus on the objective bonuses if you want to get anywhere fast... But can anyone do it faster?

For some completely asinine reason, office workers don't want to use the bathroom thats on the same floor as their office, when they're coming in for the day. For example, I'll regularly see a person who works on the 14th floor take the elevator to the bathroom on the 10th floor, then get back on the elevator, ride it the rest of the way to the 14th floor, then walk past the bathroom on their floor to get to their office. Why? You're just bumping your stress level up by having to wait for the elevator twice, and if you had just gone to the bathroom that's on the way to your office, you would've saved yourself extra wait time.

Virtual people are stupid. The elevator's scheduling algorithm isn't that great either; a bunch of people will be queued up in the lobby, there'll be 2 or 3 elevators just sitting on the lobby, but they won't open because there's an elevator on the 14th floor slowly on its way down to the lobby, picking people up on the way.

Doublepost time!

I'm also trying to figure out why certain shops never do well, and I hypothesized that it was because I never build any condos in my towers (since they don't generate any revenue). So, I've been challenging myself by forcing myself to make condos work. In Yoot Tower, each condo has a mother, a father, and a kid. The father and the kid usually are fine, but the mothers tend to have high long-term stress levels. Long-term stress usually builds up when short-term stress builds up, short term stress being stuff like waiting for the elevators, and not being able to get to your destination. In my tower, the transit system to the condos is pretty simple, just a single elevator, and it's pretty low-traffic. The people who frequent my underground mall (I build my shops underground, because it makes things easier later) also seem to be fine stress-wise. So, I'm not sure why the mothers are having such high stress levels, unless the game is just specifically programmed to make them more sensitive to it.

The other thing is, condo residents will frequent the convenience store, but I don't know if apartment renters do that too. If you want to build a successful convenience store in Yoot Tower, you'll need condos.

On the subject of building condos, nobody would buy them until I lowered the price to the green level, from the yellow level. Maybe condo buyers aren't interested in a yellow-priced condo when you're just a one-star or two-star tower? I dunno.

I did more reverse engineering, and it turns out, the economy in Yoot Tower is extremely simple. First of all, every shop and restaurant functions completely independently of anything else that might be in the tower. There aren't any browsers that come to your shops; everyone comes from the outside to go to that particular shop or restaurant, and then leaves.

There's no concept of suppy and demand; If you have one ice cream shop, you'll get 1x the business. If you have 10 ice cream shops, you get 10x the business.

Each shop has a set price for their goods, and a set hours of operation. The amount of customers is definitely related to the number of hours the store is open, but it may or may not be related to the price of the goods (I'll look into it later). I looked at Coffee.com and Burger Land, because they have different prices but they're open for the same amount of time, and both shops got a similar number of customers (100~150 per day). However, the reason Burger Land was doing well was because their goods cost $10 and the daily maintenance cost for the shop itself is $800. However, Coffee.com's goods cost $5, but its daily maintenance cost is $900. In the game, this shop has a bad evaluation each day, which made me think the store was unpopular, but the case actually is that the store is just as popular as the rest of my shops, it just had a bad profit margin.

Aside from that, it seems that some shops that should do ok (such as the noodle restaurants in the Tokyo scenario) do extremely badly. I'm not sure what else is considered when the game determines how many customers a shop is going to get (maybe demographic?), but I know it's definitely the hours of operation and most likely the price. However, this is a different measure from the profitability of the shop, which solely depends on its daily maintenance and cost*customers.
