Hey, everyone. I looked around, and I'm pretty sure there isn't a topic quite like this on the forum, so I'm gonna start it: We're gonna talk games, as one is wont to do on the Games forum. The twist? We're gonna talk games that we love -- doesn't matter if it's console, PC, mobile. AAA or kusoge, it's all welcome here, provided you can give a good "why". There's something about hearing people talk about what makes their game special to them -- it feels good to see someone be so happy with a game, even if it's a game I don't personally like.

So, to start us off, I'm gonna talk about Monster Party. Why Monster Party? Because it was one of the first NES games I ever got when I was a kid, and it really sticks with me. The fact that a game can be so unabashedly, consistently weird still surprises me to this day. Where else can you fight a piece of shrimp tempura that turns into an onion ring that turns into yakitori? Or how about watching two zombies dance to taiko music? It's beautiful. It's weird, freaky, horrible, and beautiful. That, and probably the most shocking ending next to Adolph Hitler's exploding head in Bionic Commando.

Too many to talk about, and too much to say about some, so instead I'll just talk about what I just happened to look at last.

The first Puyo Puyo games. And Madou Monogatari.

Not quite nostalgia... I think? I do associate them to a time of my life that I miss now... But the actual reasons go a bit further than that.
Like, I remember trying to figure some of the trickier puzzles in Nazo Puyo during school. And being overall interested in a series that I was so distant yet so into at the same time. And I hoped to understand and look further into all of it in a hopeful near future that never happened.

It was also a time when I pretty much defined myself, and to me these games are associated with all that. The self-aware RPG parody setting and quirky cast, the wonderful music... I have a personal attachment to all that.

... That said, I suck at Puyo. And am not really into the series anymore... I'd love to see other Madou games translated though.

Ocarina of Time! Not the first game I played, that was Yoshi's Story. It might've been the first game that I beat, but that's not why I love it so much.

OoT is an amazing game for so many reasons. Stepping out into Hyrule Field for the first time is awesome and being able to roam around and find so many secrets is great. Even something as simple as just progressing through the quest is huge because every time you beat one thing, you unlock a whole new area to explore, culminating in Ganon's Castle, which has to be my favourite area in the game. OoT also has amazing music; I've spent countless hours listening to the Song of Storms. The cutscenes still give me chills, and I've been playing it for most of my life. And of course, glitching OoT is so much fun, even if it's a little tedious at times. Managing the DoT skip as Child and Adult is still awesome, especially when you manage to get them on your first try.

And it wouldn't be me if I failed to mention Metroid. But I can't pick a specific game here. Prime was the first Metroid I played, but Zero Mission was the first Metroid I loved enough to beat it... over 20 times. Prime 2 is easily my favourite Metroid game, yet given the choice, I'd probably speedrun Super Metroid instead. I love the series so much, even when something goes terrible wrong *cough*othermwasaterriblegame*cough*.

These two posts, these are the kind of things that make me feel good as a gamer. I want to see everyone gush about things, no matter how inane or silly you might feel it is.

To hook onto Zero-One: My favorite Metroid game is actually Fusion. Fusion gave me a lot of hope that Nintendo could successfully integrate a decent narrative in my Metroid games, and I really liked it. If Other-M were better-written, it might've actually been an amazing game, what with the foundations Fusion set. (Who else would like to see Fusion-suit samus again, considering that the suit should, for all intents and purposes, be part of her body?)

I like the Super Metroid genre in general, come to think of it. Games like Shadow Complex (best Metroid game in the past 5 years) and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (best Metroid-esque game not made by Nintendo, possibly best Metroid game ever) just totally devour my time. ESPECIALLY Symphony of the Night. I think I've played that damn game for like two or three hundred hours, split across PSX and Saturn. There's so many ways to approach everything -- do you go with finding the most hideously broken gear you can (Hello, Shield Rod + Alucard Shield or dual Crissaegrim) and roflstomp the game in a hurry, or do you try wacky ideas (like leveling up your Muramasa to 999 ATK) and have fun with it? So many self-induced challenges, and yet it manages to consistently stay fresh and entertaining.

I got into Phantasy Star II at what was probably the height of my interest in sci-fi, and it really stuck with me... I think it's interesting, while I love the game's characters, and think that considering how little dialogue and such they have it's amazing how well-characterized they are... (I mean, you only see Neifirst for the one scene at Climatrol) the completely computer-controlled world of Mota, where despite that the people are trapped in the towns and afraid to leave (but believe themselves to have achieved utopia), the abandoned ruins of Dezo... And what really amazes me when I look at the game now is how little the game did to achieve this, really...

Man, I have quite many games I love, and I where to talk about them all I'd sit here all year. :V

Instead I'll start off with talking about Pokemon Ruby! Now, you may say emerald is better, but I don't have emerald, so I had to make do with Ruby. Pokemon was always magical to me, pokemon red was one of my first games ever and I spent countless hours on it as a kid. Once I finally managed to get a working copy of gold (my dad picked up one during one of his vacations, but it was a bad pirate copy that was kinda broken...) I just played that to death. But the real magic happen when I got ruby, oh man, fuck yeah!

One of the biggest things about it was that it was one of those games that I had saved up for a long time for that I bought myself. (Rather then getting as a Yule gift or birthday present.) I started playing and I instantly fell in love with the music and the lively graphics. It was just something about it that drew me in. But it was a few mins in when shit really went down through my brain; You got the running shoes. It was there and then that I knew, the game was not pulling any punches, this was going to be gosh darn awesome!

I guess this has kinda to do with my having very little patience and wanting things to go fast. The speedy battles was also a big thing for me (G3 is still to this day one of the fastest if not THE fastest. Only B&W is on rivalry level.) I just had a ton of fun with it. But the real blast was the world itself! It was so lively, walking around in it and taking in the sights. The first time I entered the route with the ash falling, now that was freaking special for me. (Though admittingly, I thought it was snow and went a bit WTF as of why there was snow so close to a volcano)

Man I could just go on forever...
And I guess that explains my layout too... or well part of it. :p

Of my favorite games, my all-time favoritest game is probably Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Even just typing out the full name makes me happy. It's certainly not my first game, (that would be SMB3~) but one of the ones that had the biggest impact on me as a kid.

Sure, I love the action and platforming, and bouncing eggs of walls to take out enemies is quite satisfying. The main thing I love, though, is the art style. The vibrant colors and smooth animations make the world feel so alive. I love the music, too, with the athletic and castle themes being my favorites. I can't really describe it very well, but I love the game to death. I can 100% it in one run, and I do every time a new release of it comes out. I think a bit part of it is the official Player's Guide for it. The whole book was filled with not only maps of all of the colorful levels, but colorful, doodley official artwork of enemies and stuff. It even had a list of every enemy in the game (with names) and I loved it. In fact, it's probably one of the big reasons I even got into mapping in the first place.

Yoshi's Island is a masterpiece. On every level. Unarguably THE greatest Mario game Nintendo has made, and very much one of the best games ever.

Like, there's so much you can objectively say about it you'd need to write an essay. The technical aspects are awesome, the ambience is amazing and extremelly immersive, the designs tie in perfectly with everything and are on all aspects extremelly clever and original (and fun)-- from the art style to the level design to the gameplay to how everything reacts.
And it all being a really nice take in the world of the Mario series that just does its own thing for the sake of making a fun game is the frosting of the thing. It really shows how the Mario Team poured their hearts into the thing.

Even the flaws of the game exist by design!

Really, anyone with the slightlest idea of game design or development, can agree that Yoshi's Island is beautiful.

I'm with Lunaria -- Pokémon.

I started playing back before it really boomed. I grew up with it, and while the games have changed a bit over time, they stuck to the same formula that made it a success in the first place. Another great thing is that while the gameplay is incredibly easy for somebody to pick up and learn, it takes a lot of patience to master. The games are easy but I was completely overwhelmed when I first learned about EV training, something that makes or breaks your metagame team.

You know, I have to agree with this. Back on the SNES, even though I love the system and a ton of games for it, it's the only one that I can think of that just seems like a work of art.

There definitely are other wonderful games for the system, just that this is of the few I can think that nobody would disagree on.

Talking about that, Terranigma. One of my most liked games of all. Though I am going to partially blame being easily impressionable at the time, and it all being unlike anything I had seen up to that point.
But still, it is also a game that really knew what it was doing. Powerful story (even though kinda weak in its actual execution, the meaning behind it really pushes the thing), it is fun to play (just look at how many things can Ark do anytime!)...

And probably where it shines most is in its ambience. Heck, just the inside-earth world map speaks for itself: they went through the trouble of making it convex, with the reflective "Crystal Blue" sky, with a song that really empathizes the situation at that point in the story, to evoke exactly the right feelings in the player.
Basically, the game looks and sounds pretty, in a way that can only be achieved when the ambience of it and the technical details go hand in hand.

Everything of this game is so symbolic and so full of meaning, and it all reflects on how the whole game looks and feels. From the empty lonely caves to a random city, the main themes of the game are simply everywhere.

It's a shame there are so many misconceptions on this game. Like, no, the cities thing is not major gameplay, it is a device to empathize one of the main themes of the game. Focusing on it instead of the reason of it is missing the point.
Also half of it is lost in translation or something. (But I am talking about everything behind the text anyway)

For me, that big game I love has to be Uncharted 3.

In a world where the stereotypical game is style over substance, one game for the PS3 reigns supreme.

The perfect blend of gameplay, sound, and story, make even puzzles worth doing, and online multiplayer worth playing. If only I had a fast enough connection to play online... I have to settle for co-op offline.

I should start at the beginning, when I first got a PS3. One of the games available at the time was Uncharted 2. Uncharted 2 was hella fun, and it got me hooked on the series. Uncharted 3 sold me on this one fact... Nathan Drake is my favorite video game character of all time. He may appear to be super human, and he certainly seems it with how he defies death... but he bleeds virtual blood, just like virtual everyone else. He has feelings. He has fears. He has his own story that I can bring myself to give a damn about.

There are a great deal of retro games that I enjoy, and some of them even stand out from the crowd as legendary games. However, that was then, and this is now. Uncharted 3 has become the game to beat.

A little thing while I try to go to sleep -- I'm planning on responding to a few people with questions, but this is just a little personal gaming-vent.

NiGHTS got rereleased on PSN the other day, and I've been replaying it and listening to the soundtrack, and I stumbled onto Growing Wings. Then, probably my most vivid memory of the game came back -- playing Twin Seeds. For a game that is totally devoid of actual narrative, that stage had more storytelling in it than was really necessary.

Going to the thing to switch to Nights like in every other level, getting knocked back what felt like millions of miles away from him onto a little island... and for a moment, being very scared. You have no Ideya, you have no path, all you have is this little rock and really creepy music to keep you company. So what do you do, after you pace around for a little bit?

You jump. Then, the soundtrack swells, and holy crap, you can FLY. No Nights needed! And then you save him and beat the last boss and idgaf I WAS FLYING.

Just a little moment that makes me feel really happy about the game. More comments to come... later. D:
