On that note, Youtube comments should be disabled forever. As in, people are actually encouraging and agreeing with this? What

More seriously, I'm not surprised. BSA is not very progressive and is also very much Christian and right-wing. I love what Boy Scouts did for me as a youth and I certainly want to give back to it, but I don't have to agree with the organization on everything. Makes it hard to work at the shop and hold my tongue when the occasional "thank god for the BSA disallowing gays" person comes into the shop and says it unprovoked.

(That did happen once. Man and his family came into the shop and as they were walking past to get whatever they came for, he sort of turned to me and said "Thank God the Boy Scouts don't allow gays. If they did, I'd be done with them forever." I smiled and nodded while thinking, 'maybe we'd be better off without you then.')

I know. I was in it for a while, too.

Didn't do much for me, though.

My parents were always against the boy scouts--when asked about it relevant to me, they noted the sex abuse cases and also the conservative leanings as being why they never sent me to that.

I was a Girl Scout when I was younger (specifically Brownie), but I only hung on for like a year or two. That shit got boring and stupid.

Last I checked, Gabu, the Girl Scouts are a completely different organization.

very much so, they are progressive on LGBT things
which is total opposite of boy scout's stance on it

totes not surprising the women ran organization is better

Huh. Never knew that.

Still though, my time as a Brownie was nothing but boring.

Correct, the Girl Scouts are a completely different organization. This leads to much confusion when people come into our shop thinking we have Girl Scout stuff because our sign only says "Scout Shop."

But yeah, the "boring" sentiment is one I hear all the time at the store. The girls and women that come in all say that they wanted to do the cool stuff the Boy Scouts were doing too, but the Girl Scouts were all about car-camping and selling cookies and being girly.

That's why a lot of girls eventually join Venture Scouting, the BSA's co-ed scouting program. It's way more involved than the normal Boy Scouting program, and much tougher from what I've read in their handbooks. It's very challenging, very boy/girl-led, and goes until the age of 21, three years longer than the normal Boy Scout program.

Good stuff does happen in the world, but you'd never know because the news only focuses on the ugly.

My mom actually told me something along those lines once--that the reason you hear about all these bad things is that they ARE comparatively unusual. Not sure I believe her, but it's worth thinking about.
