The Hack

About

Royal Flush - Princess Sidestory is a hack of SMB3 that is built using the wonderful disassembly made by Southbird. It's going to be a full eight worlds, and contain as many tweaks as I can pull off in my skillset.

I'm going to use this thread as a semi-blog as I work on things, and post updates as I work. It also has a benefit of keeping me on task for getting things done.

Overworld Icons:
Blue Icons () — are standard levels that you must complete in order to continue progress on the Board/World Map.

Red Icons () — are levels that have a gimmick or challenge to them that make them harder. They can be skipped, but they have a reward if you finish them.

Green Icons () — are chance spaces, they can be bonus items, or they can have something scary hiding there!

Midboss Icons () &msash are where the map's midboss hides. They can also unlock secret areas when cleared.

Boss Icons () — are where the map's Boss hides. Clear this level in order to move on to the next Board/World Map.

This is the final design for overworld 1, I think. The improved path tiles are much better then the old ones, giving the level a much more readable design.

Most of it looks good, but can you do anything about how flat the hills look? Some texture, shading, or just mixing up the colors a little.

New feature! When you die, it counts your deaths. (Up to 99.) 1UPs reduce your death count.
(Yes, I did catch all the ways the game adds and removes lives.)

The way the hills are shaded looks kind of like they're curved inward on the bottom.

Y'know, like a Poring, Slime, Gel, or any other mobile blob of liquid commonly encountered in RPGs. The eyes don't help.

Still better than before, but I'd put the shading on the side instead. Might just be because that's how it's usually done and I've gotten used to it, though.

Edit: Sorry, I know it's a really minor thing to fixate on, but there's not enough posted for me to offer any suggestions for anything else.

I've changed the hills into balls. So it's no longer a worry

Also



Kuribo/Goomba's shoe now works in every level type.

( Sprite flicker version.)

Added three new "Level Equipment" items!



Unmortshroom: Makes you unable to be hurt by enemies.


Mushshoe: Powers you up with Kuribo's Shoe!


Launchshroom: Powers up your jump!


All of these are temporary power ups that leave at the end of the level. They can be used for fun and puzzles, so I'm glad to bring new gameplay for level design.

I like what you have so far. These tweaks and powerups all seem great.
I have a question: Being called Royal Flush and all, are you going to add some sort of random card poker match nmnigame thing feature? Obviously the original game has that end of level box that gives you 1 of three symbols to match. There's also that Toad minigame where you match up 3 layers of a symbol. Are you gonna upgrade those features?

Changed the Fire Flower into Bombs.





Holding up when you press B allows for you to arc your bomb into the Air. Bombs to not bounce like fireballs, and they explode on impact with anything.

Holding down and pressing B in the air allows for you to shoot them down quickly.

Are the bombs a reference to SMRPG, or am I seeing connections where there aren't any?

Also, what kind of explosion is it? A Bob-omb-scale one, or something smaller?

Not sure about the minigames yet. I really only picked Royal Flush because it sounds cool as a title. It also relates to card/board games, the style of the overworlds.

The death counter will never go below one. Think of it more as "How many lives have been used to play so far." It will also not go above 99.

Now it behaves more like NSMBWii's version. Flip Bowser or Baby Bowser and the game ends.
