I mean, it'd be really interesting to make an unofficial 4th game in the series with Donkey and Kiddy Kong, and it's an idea I've tossed around on occasion for years, but given my general inability to really hack games, it'd probably become one big giant mess at the end of the first ten minutes of starting. :|

Plus as far as I know there's not a visual hacking program like Lunar Magic for that game. I know there's one for Donkey Kong Country, but I'm pretty sure it's for that game only.

I always get awesome ideas myself like this, but then I too don't have the ability to hack them into anywhere something I'd like to. I feel for ya. :/

Shame too. I feel like I get a lot of good ideas too. You get a lot of ideas as well in that realm?

Same here.

I want to hack Metroid II, but the only editor in existence is, well, crap. You can't seem to do anything more than shift tiles around. I wanted to write an editor, but I couldn't get my hand on the documentation. I don't even have a clue of where to start.

On the upside, I can always vent stuff like this into Super Metroid, which now has 3 editors going for it.

(mental note: write Super Metroid editor)

DKC3 is one of those games that doesn't seem to get as much love as it deserves. It has one of my favorite game map systems, with the hidden caves and whatnot.

I don't have much skill when it comes to hacking stuff, but I'd gladly help out with maps/graphics if this project ever happens.

SIDEWAYS SLASH
I used to really really want to hack Kirby's Adventure. Specially since the only "real" hack in existence of it is just a short demo (by the same guy who just made Rockman 4 Minus Infinity and other insane technical hacks)

Of course, apparently the game's format is really hard to work with?

Generally the Kirby hacking scene seems to consist in lots of small hacks done by hand by random japanese people.

Though nowadays I feel recreating Kirby's Adventure's engine altogether, specially in something like Zelda Classic, would be a much better idea.

From what I've heard, Kirby games always use a whole bunch of compression. You can't even view the current tile map stored in emulator save states. (The graphics are there, but the map itself is filled with wrong tiles and wrong colors.)

Yeah, I might think that kirby on the wii may be one of the easiest kirby games to modify. :V
(Note: I have no idea though)

At first I was expecting Wario to do Wario things... and then he started sucking things into his bellybutton.

I'm kinda disappointed they didn't put more effort into the ability icons.

Yeah. Old Kirby games are the bane of hackers simply because they use a lot of esoteric compression formats. If you're wanting to hack Oldschool Kirby, the best bet is probably the GBA remake of Kirby's adventure simply because the GBA was fairly standardised in terms of compression and graphical formatting.

(Also hell yes to DKC3 hacks. It is the best DKC game).

Like too many other people I have an idea for a Pokemon hack, thankfully with a minimum of scripting - though the scripting I would need would probably be a pain in the ass.

The idea calls for a more open world, in which you can walk to any of the towns in any order you want, and to get higher-level pokemon you go further off the main path; logically the more dangerous ones are kept off the main routes because of all the traffic.

The scripting problem is pretty simple: Gym leaders choosing their team based on how many badges you have, so people would be fully capable of going through the game in any order they want, obligatory Team Evil sidestory aside. Getting the story elements set up properly shouldn't be too hard, should take no more than a basic series of event flags.

I'd probably have to use one of the DS games to have enough map room, and there's also the simple issue of whether or not I could actually focus on it long enough to get it done...

Some day I've been tempted to work on my own game, fully my work--well, maybe use some readily available engine or something, but you get the idea.

Main limitation is these things take a lot of time to make properly, and I'm an "All or nothing" kind of person, so, yeah....

I've always wanted to make a hack of an NES Mega Man game replacing Mega Man with Ice Man. I tried very briefly once but only got to graphics replacing slightly and gave up at that.

I'd really like to make it...not like a graphics hack but a full-on playable thing, like he moves like Ice Man does when you fight him in the first game, uses the Ice Slasher instead of the Mega Buster or Arm Cannon with all the sound effects. I'm not sure how difficult a thing like that would be, but it would be extremely fun if I could get a person or two to help me with that.

IIRC, Kirby's Adventure / Kirby Super Star used the same compression spec...

And I wrote a DLL to allow people to de/recompress data using that specification. I should see if I still have it floating around somewhere.

Edit: oh hey, there is it.. and, it's an incomplete build?

There are level editors for DKC2 and DKC3. Although they were originally in Japanese, kingizor translated them and posted them here. You may not be able to import a playable Donkey Kong into DKC3 using its editor (that would require buttloads of assembly hacking, animation script tweaking, and graphics importing), but at least it's a start.

I think the thing in DKC3 hacking I'd be most interested in is hacking the world maps. I love exploring for caves and stuff, and it would be awesome to be able to design your own little continent. :3

Well technically anyone can hack a game if they are willing to do it. The real question is how much time are you willing to devote to creating such a hack!
