Unfortunately, in the case of the US, stupidly managed companies are more common than ones that have people with actual intelligence behind the helm.

because, as Xkeeper himself said in this topic, lurkers often read posts on a forum for some time before they actually join, and it's obvious that any newcomer with an IQ higher than 5 will see how bad and impolite those administrators are, or how biased those judges are, but that's another story

Except for those little kiddies who post "lulz" or "pwn noob" or "epic fail" everytime a user gets banned.

Kind of like the thing where you're driving alongside the road and you go "Uh-oh! Busted!" laughing because it's not happening to you at the moment.

Which kind of have a tendency to take over the entire userbase eventually, so... yeah...

Some months ago I was watching a movie and I came up with an analogy, and I can as well post it here.

Did you see "The Terminal" movie? Am I the only one who thought that Frank Dixon is just as bad as DarkKobold? For example, I think about the scene where Viktor Navorski is collecting the carts to get the quarters he needs to buy some food, and Dixon invents a new operator that collects the carts in Viktor's place just to piss him off even though he was doing nothing wrong. And there are many other episodes like that in the movie, Dixon just seems to have pure fun by making Viktor's life impossible. By the end of the movie, everyone (including the guards at the airport who are supposed to be on Dixon's side) realises that Dixon is a prick and that Viktor is a good guy who's been persecuted beyond the limit for no reason, and even the guards themselves disobey him.

Almost like the story of tasvideos, where innocent people are persecuted for no reason other than the fun of that guy, too bad real life isn't like a movie, and that guy is still well stable at his place where he can keep on tormenting people who did nothing wrong.

There's another movie which can be used an example, interestingly enough it's another movie related to airports and airplanes too: "Catch Me If You Can". Ignore the lovely happy ending for a moment, and focus on the chase itself. How many of you cheered for Frank Abagnale Junior? And how many of you cheered for Carl Hanratty? I bet 99% of you said yes to the first question (I know I did), and I'm completely sure that DarkKobold would say yes to the second one instead.

I wish real life was justified like the movies, where the good guy always wins and the bad guy always loses.

It is common knowledge in this profession that programmers are overly optimistic in their time estimates. Any manager worth their salt knows that unless they add some buffer to it, sooner or later they will end up with projects that exceed their budgets in both time and cost.

Programmers generally aren't in the habit of doing like Scotty, i.e. holding something back so they can satisfy inevitable and yet unreasonable "I need more" requests. Unless they're desperately in the need of vacation.

A bit late of a reply, but the best experience I have is from my current job.

Given the task of a total rewrite of the system -- throwing it all out and beginning fresh with the most recent requirements in place1, I was asked to give an estimate.

I said "5 to 6 months, at best." For one person (with a lot of other odd jobs), it was probably too optimistic even then.

Management wanted nothing of that and demanded I make a shorter estimate, so I was more or less twisted into saying "Well, I guess 2-3 months if the planets aligned and I was turned into a hyper-productive robot."

The new baseline for all the work became two months.

Unfortunately, we have a new "IT Director" that was hired. I don't think he understands it either, and as far as I can tell has been making promises that can't be kept. I really, really need to look for a new job sooner than later.

I have heard a bit of how it is in Finland, but in US there is no job security. Tomorrow I could walk in and have no job, just like that, with no hope of getting unemployment or any other benefit. This fear for work has been what's been keeping my protests relatively quiet, because the owners aren't exactly mild-mannered if they aren't happy.

1 The requirements have changed many times since then, too.

That's one of the biggest part in the US job system that scares me, you can be fired for whatever and there seem to be no regulations against it. Over here in Sweden you can't be fired for anything, you have to either actually not do what you where hired for on the job description, do something illegal, or the company is taking losses and need to lay off workers in order to get fired here. :V

There are also a bunch of other things to help you if you happen to lose a job! In that aspect, I am in the worst position myself since I have never had a job yet and for some reason all places expects prior experience. :I

Anyone ever notice how the US job system and your ability to keep membership on TASVideos after criticizing the site are intrinsically linked?

Oh, hey Flygon! Long time no see.

I'd add a more elaborate response to this, but I don't really feel like jinxing anything at the moment. Seems that the site has turned into some kind of megacorporation though. We here don't like how the people work or how they act and shit, but we do kinda like the product that comes out of it?

I dunno, I still like the videos but I'm not a fan of the immense dickery.

Ah, hi Flygon.

It's a fairly basic thing, a site run by egotistical jerkfaces will generally not tolerate any dissent at all--even dissent that has nothing to do with them in particular and is more aimed at improving the site they run.

Of course, it being the internet, justice is rarely given to those sorts--rather they tend to be free to be jerks forever and ever.

Probably best if we all try to erase TASVideos and its videos from our minds. Besides, the format has gone stale from them turning it into a "LOWEST TIME ONLY" thing, best route would appear to be to let it fizzle out and die over multiple years, unless I'm missing things.

I should know, I was once a staff member for the site. It turns out I jumped ship at the right time.

I do dare say it's entirely possible for TASVideos to recover from it's current freefall. But it's sure as heck going to need a radical reform to do so. And given all my experiences with the site to this point, that's simply not going to happen. If anything would be to happen, there'd, quite simply, need to be a firm competitor with the balls and dedication to set up a well competing site. Of course, this being a specific niche, it's incredibly unlikely it's possible to create a competitor that will actually draw enough of the community to itself... I'd sure love to see it, though.

I will admit to stirring a fair amount of shit when I was a staff member, but I matured (somewhat) nearer to the end of my lifespan as a staff member. My only regret is not retiring when much of the other staff I worked with also retired much later on. Multiple other staff at random points have had complained to me about what has happened since I retired, but I'm not really willing to name names. It's just simply been clear to me that the iceburg has been tipped irrevocably, at this current going rate.

Heh, yeah, I'd been watching. I knew something was up when you left.

I've been tempted to try and run a site myself. I know how to run sites, I have webspace, and everything. Just not sure if I could really spare the time and effort to do it, given I'm more interested in repairing my broken social life than adding yet another site to my internet empire.

Still, I feel it would be relatively possible to make a compelling alternative and destroy TASVideos by providing more compelling competition.

Most of the attention it gets are from youtube videos of runs linking to it. It'd be a matter of just having enough content hosted on the site. (Namely, stuff that wouldn't get hosted on TASvideos anyways... which is pretty much the whole point of all this)

Of course... that means coming up with original content.

For what it's worth, I'd be up to help with a new website in every way I can (which isn't much by any standard, but still).
We can call it BTTV (Better Than TasVideos) and wait for a C&D by the BTTF guys...

I don't mind helping either. I'm stretched a bit thin at the moment, but if I can contribute in a light manner, I'd like to do so.

I've also been trying to think of some names myself. TASMania/TAS Mania? Playing with Power? Dick Over This Game!? Brute Force?

I dunno, now I'm just reaching after the first one. :/
