Once in a while get random IMs, then click that X and close them. Don't see the point confirming my existance to spammers.

I usually use Y!M for IMs, unless the other person prefers something else like AIM or IRC. Which I'm fine with.

I never got into the habit of deleting people, because any time I would use an older version of Trillian, all the buddies would be merged (so I'd have to start anew with all copies, losing old aliases and things... and since it can be hard to tell who's who with random names, uh)

I have a lot of "orphaned" buddies as well

I've never had that problem. I don't put my IM/MSN/Gtalk names up anywhere. If someone ever needs to know, I just tell them in a PM. I also don't use YM.
