I have a problem with this. I want to learn, and do new things. I want to break some bad habits. I want to have a cleaner lifestyle. The problem is that I can't stay motivated with any specific thing for very long. I get bored with it, or something.

Can any of you share some strategies that help you? How do you do it?

For me, it's the reward. With programming, I'm constantly thinking "this bot is going to be awesome" or "this game is going to be awesome". With hacking, it's the idea that I'll release a Super Metroid hack that people will like. If there is a reward in it for you, focus on it.

If you ever find out, tell me. I have many of the same problems.

I've tried thinking of the rewards, but often times, not even those interest me. :/

You could try thinking that quitting is paramount to failure, and that you don't want to fail. Weird, I know, but some people have suggested that to me, although it didn't really work for me.

For me, I try to recreate the same set of mind I was in when I first got the inspiration in the first place. I also try to keep reminders of it around. For creative endeavors, usually I listen to the same song or look at the same images that inspired the motivation in the first place. As far as self-improvement goes, keep reminders of why you want to improve. For example, while I was at my college dorm, I kept track on my calendar every time I went for a walk around campus and for how many minutes. On days I had extra time, I would look at my calendar and think "I haven't gone for a walk this week yet, I think I'll do that" or "If I go for a walk now, I'll set a personal record for this month!"

I recommend getting sticky notes, as they are a great way to keep reminders. And I don't mean virtual ones, the real kind.

I try to relate it to someone telling me that what I am doing is impossible or I can't do it. That stuff is so potent I worked on many projects for over 10 years based on someone long ago telling me I couldn't possible succeed in either.

Of course, your mileage may vary, that trigger is sort of specific to my mind. Maybe look to see what triggers your mind and use that.

All good suggestions, but all things that have been tried. I'd like to think that I'm slowly getting better, but nowhere near a point that I can be happy with. Maybe part of it is being discouraged from a lack of instantaneous results. That does seem to get to me quite a bit.

My hate for my job motivates me to write and try my damn hardest to become a paid writer.

Now, there's something that I might be able to use! ;P Are you still at the pizza place? I'm working at a car dealership right now as a photographer. While I love photography, I hate.hate.hate everything about the car business. I'm starting to fantasize about being fired...

I daydream about telling my boss off when I can finally quit.

Never worked at a pizza place. I'm a cook at a buffet inside of a casino. And man, do I hate it.

Use the hate to fuel what you rather do and work your ass off for it. It is hard, though. I work 40 hours a week, so time is a factor, but you have to manage that time.

I'm not sure why I was thinking pizza...maybe you shared a pizza story about the buffet once, or maybe I just imagined pizza when you said buffet.

I agree, though. It is very hard to find extra time when you work 40+ hours a week, and still make time for family. It's rough. Right now, I'm trying to find motivation in saving money for (hopefully) college. But come to find out, either the requirements for graduating high school in my state have changed since I graduated, or my Advisers in high school didn't really know what was going on, but I seem to not have the required courses to attend even a 4 year state university. Which, for lack of a better term, sucks. After going through so many doors to be able to afford it financially, now I'm being told that I might not make it for a while, and I should go to a community college for a few years. There are a few problems with that. First, Apparently I'll get more Financial Aid at a 4 year university, and that's something I'm going to need. Second, I know me. I'm not going to be able to focus at a community college here. There's just so much going on for me here. I feel like I need to get out of town for education. I'm fairly confident that if I put myself in a new environment, I'll function better with school.

Oh, dear. I'm rambling...

I always find I need a little bit of stress and a deadline in the future to keep me working hard.

I mean, I do okay when I've got no deadlines and whatnot, but if I set myself goals and time limits to try and get things done I am usually ten times more productive (it is ridiculous, seriously).
