This guy seems like he's not a total idiot, something that the Republican party hasn't had in a while. This also scares me, as I really don't want Romney to lead our country! If he wins, anybody that's female, gay, poor, or not Republican is going to have a really shitty life.

That's the scary part! He's evil, but he's smart. He is completely devoid of any kind of empathy (as any Ayn Rand follower would be).

http://www.ontheissues.org/House/Paul_Ryan.htm -- List of his votes

His budget would get rid of medicare as we know it (by basically privatizing it), privatize social security, get rid of our safety net (as small as it is), and virtually phase out most other discretionary spending (infrastructure, environment, education [pell grants!!], and others) --- all to give rich people a tax cut.

Normally, but too much of the Republican voting base hates Romney, so he was basically forced to pick someone they like.

I wonder how much this was really necessary for Romney, though- I mean, the Republican base may not be hugely fired up by him, but it would be cancelled out by how much they dislike Obama...

All I know is I feel this will mobilize a lot of people just to vote against Romney... it may cost him Florida, too.

What I can't understand is why Romney would pick a candidate who, for all intents and purposes, is even more conservative than he is. Paul Ryan basically wants to get rid of anything that has the slightest tinge of "socialism".

They don't want to risk an apathetic voter base, particularly given how enthusiastic Obama's voters were last time around.

Of course, the problem with that is that they've also given Obama more material to ignite his own base, what with the Ryan budget and all that...

Well, with lines like how Romney is going to "reform" the government... with the help of Paul Ryan... and how it is somehow "different" despite it not actually being that way... I can see that they have their main voters tied up pretty well.

Unfortunately for them, I doubt that base counts as enough to actually elect a president, numerically.

The second part is why I wonder if Romney really made the right move- for awhile, the fear was an apathetic Democratic base disillusioned with Obama... but they certainly don't like Paul Ryan's budget.

Even without that, though, the underlying problem of certain states having more power still exists. Hawaii has 1,374,000 people. California has over 27 times that. Where do you think the campaign money is getting spent?

I would guess in neither state, since as far as I know both are fairly reliably Democratic.

Yeah, here in California we basically laugh off Republicans. They have some sway in a few areas, but otherwise they can't win, even when they have the monetary advantage. Jerry Brown defeated Meg Whitman without even trying.

Fair enough, I was just quickly looking at population numbers since I was (lazy/in a hurry/not terribly interested, pick one)

You just picked bad examples. California has over 37 million people while Wyoming has just over 500,000 people. Yet they both get two senators.

In any case, I am aware that the whole point of the senate was to give equal power to every state, I simply find that to be a terrible setup.

Thus the House of Representatives.

The money will be spent in the swing states, just like every election. The attack ads have already started here in Pennsylvania... and I live in the western part where it's very rural and very conservative. Needless to say, as a native Californian, I find it all very disturbing.
