1 Player games are automatically 4 player (COM are required), however in 2/3 player games, COM is optional. In 4 player games with people, COM is disabled.
Here's a video of me playing with 4 fake people, again, no 10 - 19 called out at all. And the round number is announced, but there is no 'final round'.
<object width="560" height="315"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WbECwGaHh2Q?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
And I believe if there's a tie, the game goes into some mode where the stage starts crumbling and the last man standing wins. |

I guess that the voice from 15 to 20 might be unused. See the pic. You are on round 12, and if anybody wins except the 2 player, the games end. And since its round 12, ant lets say 2P won round 12 and the next round, they will be at round 14, in which someone inevitable will win.

Some unused Monkey Target stuff...
Appear to be unused powerups. I would assume the first one would make your monkey ball bigger (not sure what that would be useful for)...The other one...I have no idea...did it make your monkey ball black and sticky? Was it a early design for the sticky/magnet graphic found in the final release?
I also found this little snowflake in the (quite small) texture repository for Monkey Fight. I don't think it's used, but I could be wrong.
EDIT (5:07PM PST): I also found a 'no wind' powerup (stops the wind in Monkey Target) except the 'mph' is replaced with a 'M', and this change also exists in early E3 screenshots...but those were Japanese localized, so I assume it meant meters...But nobody here at all has the Japanese version of Super Monkey Ball, so we will never know :p |

The Big icon reminds me of that powerup in monkey race 2 in SMB2. As for the second one, it seems some sort of magnet, but perhaps this one meant dropping exactly vertical to the spot?
Also the snowflake seems unused. The ice stage for monkey fight uses the standard 2 snowflakes. Or it might be an effect? Like when you get hit with something?

When you get hurt, you get CRASH_STARs (or whatever they're called in the code), or basically those golden stars you see on impact...and the snowflakes in the ice stage are 3D, that one appears to be a tiny 2d flat shape.
More stuff:
A cloud. Unused.
A bubble. Unused.
A nearly invisible torus. May be used, if so not sure where...could it be some sort of filter for the letters? (The transperent 'balls' that the letters are in already exist in the code)
These were all found in the texture file for the title screen. |

That torus seems weird. Maybe a filter for the AV logo?
Also I have some concerning about stage 142. I don't it may have been used as a underwater effect testing.
Go to model test in the debug menu and select stage. Go to st142. As you browse the content. They are some objects named MOT_GATE. Seems obvious that they would have some sort of action. The point of interest are the files 85 to 92. They are called RED_LAMP_(A-H). Now go to the mini game directory and go to monkey fight. Files 10 to 17 are the same as files 85 to 92 from stage 142. Also the files that are the same between are the BOX_(A-B) objects. My best bet that it was some sort of monkey fighting stage, or was another minigame that got rewritten to monkey fight.

| Interesting. Something interesting is that there are so many of those little blocks that make up the stage..that could be for Sudden Death where the stage starts to crumble (or was that only in SMB2?)... |

Looks to me like it would be the shadow of a ball, with shadowing in the middle.

Yeah, I noticed that. This stage also seems familiar with stage 141.
Also, I noticed this 2 things aren't used.
The texture indicating where the goal is. It is used on the arcade version, but is unused under normal gameplay (it is used on the debug menu when selecting a stage)
Also, I seem so found another unused BG. Have you played the master level form the arcade version? The master level from the arcade version has unique textures, like the star at the beginning. Its filename has master, so I wonder if its from the arcade version? It seems like a more plain bonus stage BG.

Hmmm...I swear I've seen that GOAL marker before...isn't it used in the View Stage menu?
By the way, this is kind of off-topic, but Super Monkey Ball has no limit to the size your glove can get in Monkey Fight. :O

Its used in the arcade version, but is not used in the main game. Its only used in the select stage from the debug menu, so its unseen during normal gameplay.

That looks somewhat similar to the credits minigame-thingy when go all the way through a difficulty level.

I know, but the credits one IIRC, used the bonus stage BG, with the clouds & stuff. This one is simpler, and its in a separate folder form the BG used in game. Also, this one has MASTER, in its name, with no other files associating to this. I wonder if there is something more, because the emulator tends to crash when viewing the files in this directory .

The game probably crashes because bg_j is compressed in .lz format (LZip won't extract it due to a 'bad magic number'...
If you want to pick around a bit at said file, download here... |

Ever wonder why Expert Floor 7 was so hard? Here's your answer.
Although the quality is extremely poor (I'm in the process of remastering it), you can see that late in development, Expert Floor 7 was originally Master Floor 3...however, the developers did a very good job on covering this fact up in the code; except for the fact there are a ton of unused 'plates' in the library for Master 3...
The image was taken from a Japanese TV broadcast in 2001, by the way. |

So that's why is so hard...Also note that the stage has more bananas, and expert 7 and generally the master levels lack bananas at all. Also, that us a different model of the master temple. I think is the master temple B in the master BG data folder.

Here's a video from GameSpot showing a very early version of the game:
http://download.gamespotcdn.com/d3/gsc/e32001/mb_gc_2.mpg
So...many...differences...
First off, the intro is the arcade version with new music, and this version uses the oddly-spaced font for PRESS START. The intro is also much shorter than the arcade one.
GonGon has not been added in this edition yet, and the monkeys are called 'characters' on the Monkey Select screen.
What the...the Jungle music has been replaced with the music from the 'city in the sky' AKA 'night' world...
The clock is the same from the arcade.
Although this appears to be the English/USA version (considering the fact this was shown at E3), localization hasn't occurred yet...the banana counter doesn't have proper pluralization, and the speed meter is in km/h, not mph. However, instead of 初級 (beginner), the game displays the English BE as the level difficulty indicator.
The next scene shows Competition Mode. Normal-ish. You can clearly see that the balls are using the old, arcade-style shading instead of the new Gamecube shading. What is '1ST TRIAL'?
Something else I noticed is that at the end when all the players have finished, you can hear the Jungle music rather than the Night music.
Why is beginner stage 3 (or was it 4) underwater? Water BG seems normal.
The next level is the bonus stage. Note that gleaming/reflection hasn't been added yet, and you can still hear the old Bonus stage music from the arcade. You can also hear that the narrator is the female digitized voice from the arcade version also.
http://download.gamespotcdn.com/d4/gsc/e32001/mb_gc_1.mpg
Another video, only 16 seconds long...it appears that the treble clef stage from Advanced is Beginner Stage 7 in this early build...same old-style ball...
http://download.gamespotcdn.com/d4/gsc/gc/action/monkeyball/monkeyball_gba-1.mpg
Later version with a new clock, I really like it! It's shiner and more embossed than the current one...
Note the lack of gleaming, reflections, or underwater/rain effects...
http://download.gamespotcdn.com/d4/gsc/gc/action/monkeyball/monkeyball_gba-2.mpg
Party games. Same clock, mostly different. Notice that there's a 'big ball' powerup demonstrated in Monkey Race. O.o
Also, if you listen closely in the background, you can hear Ei-Ei-Poo theme song, from the Japanese version. |
