I knew I installed that Ethernet/Phone faceplate in the wall for a reason. See, my ISP is down right now--likely due to a nasty ice storm recently--which has knocked out my primary method of doing things online.

But! I've also got a modem installed, so I can dial into one of work's accounts to use the internet mostly for free.

Anyone else have a backup in case one ISP fails?

I know for AT&T, they give you dial-up as a backup when the DSL is wacked. Not sure about Comcast.

If my ISP goes down I would have no way to go online using a decent internet connection. However, my cell-phone which is equiped with internet(slow) is probably the closest thing I would have as a backup if my ISP failed.( Being that it is an old cell-phone, the most/only thing I can do with it is check my email.)

The most we have is the neighbor's wi-fi connection, which probably doesn't work now.

I actually wonder if anybody in this complex isn't using Comcast... the fact we don't have any phone line doesn't give us any benefits in that case.

Yeah, it's called the neighbour's wifi.

I think my cable ISP had limited dialup access for that, but it'd be of no use now since I don't even have a 56k modem anymore

My connection is rarely down, anyway (other than short disconnects at times) ...

Wifi and high-speed in general are limited around here. That said, if I wanted to leech high-speed I better have a big-ass antenna...

I guess the better part of Illinois is without MediaCom right now. Big surprise there. It's shocking to think that I actually switched to MediaCom because my previous provider was even less reliable.

Fortunately, City of Heroes works well on dial-up as long as you aren't doing network-intensive things like loading up Google's homepage, so I'm well to do until MediaBust gets their heads in the game.

Apparently there are 5 wifi connections being broadcast from neighbors around me, so I have plenty of backups if mine fails. :rof--

Better hope they don't all have the same ISP you do.

And each of them do not have WEP (or its cousins) enabled?

I'm pretty sure at least two of them are unencrypted. The only problem is they're all probably very laggy.

I don't know why I put this here.
I have dial-up connections if my main one fails, but my main computer doesn't have a modem. Sigh.
