I'll be honest, when I saw this thread, I pulled up the ten hour video of that song and just listened to it until the rest of the workday was over (rather, until our internet died, which was basically two hours of that song).

Yep.

Well, Jul is also the Swedish word for Christmas, and shares the common root from which the Finnish word for both Christmas (joulu) and a feast (juhla) comes.
For example, santa claus = julgubben in Swedish. And after watching this video (or these two) it should not be unclear what's my opinion of that :-)

Also, I kind of approve of listening to What is love in a 10-hour loop. It's a catchy song with a great singer, a good melody and a good background music.
Stupid lyrics, though, which caused me to initially hate the song.

If Wikipedia is anything to go by, "Jul" is also the Norwegian word and I thought that's where Jul's name came from. I now know Jul is short for JustUs League.

We should really think of a new acronym for JUL, I don't really think the "JustUs Board" really suits what JUL has become.

The term "just us" is really quite flexible and abstract though.

I never realized that "justus" is syllabilized like that. I saw that somewhere in Xkeeper's works before, but I never thought of that. For me it has only been a Roman name. (Also, an acquiantee of mine used to call me by that name for whatever reason I still don't know really long time ago.)

Do you really want Jul to go the way of TWA? (Though I suppose as it stands we're going the way of At&t... which legally does not stand for anything anymore)

I found a site focusing on baby name, and "Justus" apparently means "just, upright". Justus was also the 4th Archbishop of Canterbury.

I keep getting the vibe that it's simply Jul now. No acronym meaning or special message.

It's Jul. That's all.

Jul was never an abbreviation. It looks like it was -- after all, "Justus League" does fit -- but it was more a "Okay, this name doesn't fit any more, it needs to be changed" creation. Have you noticed that anywhere Jul is referenced, it's always as "Jul" and never "JUL"? (Exception: Small pixel fonts.)

"Justus League" was originally named that because it was specifically limited to a very small subset of people1. It eventually went public, which is what triggered the name change, some time later. (It was also a decent pun on "Justice League", but for "just us". Yes...)

Jul2 being the word for Christmas in several languages is kind of a happy accident, and to my knowledge we never really used the double-meaning for anything.

1: Fun fact: The original JL required a passcode to register.
2: Jul (as "jewel") and Yule are pretty similar sounding, after all.
7: Inspired by a quote from a movie. Name it and get a bonus point. Bonus points are worthless.

I won't name it, but I'll go on record to say that its sequels were garbage even I wouldn't dare touch. :p

I'm glad I'm not the only one to think of this.

It's sad, but I still remember this. "leetest + numpad" was the hint, and you were supposed to enter "1337357".

I don't think I can train myself to not continue pronouncing it as "Juhl".

The Sandlot. That's the sad thing about the internet, there's so much information at your fingertips that it doesn't take effort anymore.

It's only a bonus point if you knew what it was beforehand. The Sandlot is one of the best movies I've ever seen and I need to rewatch it

Juhl is actually a pretty close way of saying it too. Personally, anything that follows Juhl/Jewel is okay with me; technically it's pronounced like the first part of "July" and you can get away with either.

I kind of miss Daily Cycle 2, thinking about it.

Jul means never having to apologize for threatening to, and I quote, "staple (someone's) hands to (their) mom".

Among other things.

(And I've always pronounced it like "jewel". What's my prize? :U)

That's silly. Staplers are a much more effective weapon if you use it to staple the inside of their cheek. It's extremely painful, yet leaves very little evidence. That way it's really easy to inflict psychological trauma.

Hey, I wasn't the one who said it! It was Rick!
