Jul was never an abbreviation. It looks like it was -- after all, "Justus League" does fit -- but it was more a "Okay, this name doesn't fit any more, it needs to be changed" creation. Have you noticed that anywhere Jul is referenced, it's always as "Jul" and never "JUL"? (Exception: Small pixel fonts.)
"Justus League" was originally named that because it was specifically limited to a very small subset of people
1. It eventually went public, which is what triggered the name change, some time later. (It was also a decent pun on "Justice League", but for "just us". Yes...)
Jul
2 being the word for Christmas in several languages is kind of a happy accident, and to my knowledge we never really used the double-meaning for anything.
1: Fun fact: The original JL required a passcode to register.
2: Jul (as "jewel") and Yule are pretty similar sounding, after all.
7: Inspired by a quote from a movie. Name it and get a bonus point. Bonus points are worthless.
