The General forum... Must every board have one? (Rhetorical question.)
(The hierarchy goes board->forum->topic->post I presume. Sometimes the meaning of board and forum are swapped.)

Aside from a few concentrated spots of a particular topic (such as TCRF wherein I posted earlier), I don't quite understand what is the point or purpose of this board. Can anyone elucidate?

History time!

Acmlm's Board originally started back in 2001 or so (using an earlier version of this very forum software). Primary focuses: ROM hacking, emulation.

Over a short period of time, it turned into a broad, community-based board for all sorts of things; gaming, emulation, ROM hacks, serious news/stuff, role-playing, etc.

Years and years passed, and the original focuses of the site faded away/split off. The board underwent several chaotic splits and changes of ownership.

TCRF is here because those of us who founded it put it here.



Basically: Jul is a community of people who generally get along with one another, who tended to turn into a close-knit group of people.

(as a side note, I had to remove your avatar before, because it was turning into the no-hotlinking 2000x2000 image. it looks like it has been fixed, though.)

It has not been fixed. I just used an alternative URL to it.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have probably asked you about the board history once or more before, but I have good capacity for forgetting things... Tangible benefit: Spoilers don't work well on me.
And had TASVideos/NESVideos not been taking most of my time back then, I would probably have been a regular here instead. :-)

As for the image: It's disruptive. I guess it works if it's intentional, but if not (as was the case here) it can really wreck things. The inability to differentiate between someone hotlinking on purpose and it just not working right means it can't be fixed, but...

Hmm, now I remember that this same issue came up before; the board moved URLs and it your whitelist wasn't updated, so all of your posts had a huge image.

Yes, I had registered on the previous version of the board and had more posts there than I have here now; that much I remember. I did not remember being on the IRC channel, but then again, I have been quite random and unattached about then in general.


I see what you mean re: whitelists not being updated. Yes, it's a difficult compromise. I have many images on my server but an abysmal upload bandwidth. I want to be in control of in which situations those resources are used.
Unfortunately machines are like that: machines. They do what they're made to do, with no judgement to the situation. At least as long as people don't figure out how to upload a mind to a computer.

No, only one color: addribute needs to be defined, it's just some other board themes here use dark fonts, and black text on your layout goes baaaad.

Hmm, default mood avatar does not equal to 1 here. That's like the post editing bug on tasvideos, except more serious :-/ On the plus side, they're available to everyone. Yay.
I'm not sure why I made them conditional to ${secret_factors} on tasvideos. Maybe I did not trust users enough.

The default (0: none) actually substitutes your default avatar. (So if you wanted, you could put your effective mood avatar #1 there and replicate the behavior.)

Similarly, you can set them even if you do not have a mood avatar set, and it will take effect in the event you change it later.

Ah, yes. I am not sure whether I want to keep it fixed/scrolling, but I figured that this lets people see more of the board at the background at least until I start writing posts of the length more typical to me.

I don't know if I'll do one of those types - it was a cool idea to me initially, but I've grown more fond of "normal" layouts and I worry that too many of such layouts will bring some machines to their knees, knowing web browsers nowadays...
