We don't have a general Emulation forum, so it's here or Gaming.

Anyway!

I've been wanting to do some more N64 emulation, and I'm getting a new controller this Friday so now's as good a time as any to prepare. The problem is, I have no idea what emulator's the best pick. I'm not actually doing any hacking with it, I just want to be able to play some games with a non-shitty controller.

If possible, I'd like one that lets me map the keys differently for each game. Stupid C buttons. But I've only ever seen that feature in ZSNES, so I'm not counting on it.

I'm running Windows 7 on the computer that I'll be putting this on.

This one
Comes prepacked with several plugins (most important of these is the hi-res texture loader/dumper plugin).

Probably will be recognised as a virus by all major AV programs, so if any come up with any such virus warning...

And yes, this one lets you edit everything controller related, not sure if per-game mapping is supported though. :/

Project64 is pretty much the go-to emulator for gaming but it hasn't seen active development for years. Most of the compatibility problems are solved by third party plugins and the like. It works, but it's clunky. But a good chunk of games are well-playable.

Mupen64 is also decent, if slower. But it's sorta in development still ish.

I'm echoing the Project 64 love. It's a fantastic emulator and I've never had a problem with it. I can't comment on Mupen; the only game I've played using it is Ocarina of Time. It works fine, but there's a huge amount of lag when opening and closing the pause menus. 2 seconds, or thereabouts.

I think most emulators have trouble with the pause/inventory screen. Even Nintendo's official emulator lags a bit (the one included with the GC collection did, anyway).

Ah, I hadn't really noticed. It's just that Mupen has it waaay worse.

Of course, you're not likely to base your emulator decision on the functionality of a relatively small part of one game.
