Planes, for me, went from:
"Oh my god, I feel like a VIP from the future boarding this high tech flying machine that gets us to our super far destination in just a few hours in a super convenient form, how awesome!"

To:
"Stop grabbing my junk ya old man! Hey, stop rustling through my laptop bag and messing with my shit old lady! It's just a shampoo bottle and nail clippers..who do you think I am MacGyver?

Fuck that! I will gladly drive a long ass time now to avoid legalized rape. I've never gotten on a train, but no doubt its not the rage fest that is an airplane boarding today. Oh yeah almost forgot..Long bus ride from Mexico city back home (Texas) when I was like 11. Pertinent facts: Bus toilet out of order, greasy spicy mexican food for every meal. Nuff said.

Hmm, now I know why I like to stay in all the time.

The person was going back to their father's house, but apparently something was wrong. They were on drugs, smoking despite being only 17, and didn't want to see their father either.

Their parents tried to contact him but he refused to do so. My cell phone became a nexus for this crisis. I got off the bus at my destination, relieved that I had gotten away from it... only I hadn't.

The kid eventually wound up in Los Angeles, where he saw his father, went nuts, ran out into the freeway and was killed by a Semi truck. I was the second to last person to see that person alive, and his mother called me. I wound up being a virtual shoulder to cry on, and had to explain that I had tried to get through to him but he was... broken, so I had done all I could to help him but in the end outside of physically restraining him I couldn't have stopped him from riding all the way to Los Angeles and then ultimately comitting suicide.

That's... pretty heavy stuff. I hope that kid's in a better place now.

Yeah, me too. He was suffering pretty badly while he was here, if his whole story was as bad as I heard it was.

But yeah, I'm gonna safely say that's about the worst experience one might normally have as across many rides nothing ever came close to that one. Oh sure, sometimes I was squished in or annoyed or bored or uncomfortable, but nothing like THAT ever happened again...

So far I've ridden in cars, buses, trains, helicopters, airplanes, small boats and a cruise liner. My air force friend is trying to set up a day where she'll get me in the back of a fighter jet, so if that ever happens, I think I'll have done it all aside from spacecraft.

I'd say my favourite is travel by train. It's such a god damn shame America's train infrastructure is so terrible compared to England and Europe. If it wasn't, I'd travel more often.

Dude! Stop winning at life. If you ever go Mach 1, please do tell. I may have you beat on one though, I forgot in middle school we went to Nashville for our Jazz band trip and we totally got on this A Riverboat! Not sure if it counts since its not like we "traveled" to another city but it sure was a thing that we got on and it moved!

I personally wouldn't mind seeing what it's like on a cruise liner. It's just a shame I doubt I could ever afford something like that. At least without feeling guilty for spending all the money, I suppose. I should probably look up how much they are though, just out of my own curiousity.

Depending on where you are in Maine, you may be able to get a similar experience for relatively cheap. I imagine there are large yachts that sail up an down the coast of the state.

Honestly though, being on a cruise ship is a very boring experience if you're like me and not much of a social person. I ended up spending most of the time below deck with my boyfriend, only emerging at night to look at the stars. There wasn't a whole lot to do as well, since I had a bargain bin cruise trip. It was just a boat with rooms, a pool on the aft section, and a bar on deck two.

Well, not sure if you clicked on the link. But the riverboat I got on is basically enormous. A cruise ship riverboat if you will. So didn't really feel in any danger and unless you went top side and walked to the rotor side, you really can't hear its rumblings.

I'm totally with you with the swamp/gator stuff and I assume you mean the "south" when you mention not getting along with the locals. Not sure if Nashville is considered to be in the "south." But well, it seemed normal enough to me. (Not like I mingled with the local yocals anyway, mostly stayed with my group of band mates)

* totally no offense to anyone from the "south" *

As for cruise liners...I so don't understand the appeal. It's basically a nice hotel on the water. You can just go to... a nice hotel on land and NOT be locked into one location at all times.

I clicked the link, but got frustrated when I started allowing things through noscript, so I didn't see much of a boat. I assumed you meant a fanboat. Those things are just death waiting to happen.

I live about 30-40 km away from the capital of my country, but to this day I have never went by the underground train (metro), and only maybe twice by the tram. And I don't remember a single time in my life that I would have been travelling by bus without a) travelling with someone or b) it being a charter.

I travel by train regularly, and I have been to a boat, several times in a plane, boarded the underground many times in Wien and in New York during my visits there, but for some reason the metropolitan public transportation in Finland has remained foreign to me aside from the local train lines.

I seriously can't wait to go on the bus ride to San Francisco next month! Going to have quite a bit more luggage, and the route is going to be different once Nebraska's over with, so I'm definitely going to take a lot of travel pics!

These bus rides actually sort of quench my wanderlust need quite a bit. One day I hope I get to travel in all the states. All of them. Except Hawaii. And maybe Canada and Mexico too if I have the time.

as stressful as it is, there's something kind of exciting about being at the airport...of course, that wears thin when you travel often and to the same damn places ~_~ I hope eventually to be able to travel all over the world as I did in my childhood...unfortunately travel expenses are utterly ridiculous these days in terms of airfare.

There's definitely something fun about arriving at an airport for the first time, especially one in another country - but yeah, being in the same airports over and over gets dull fast (especially when it's an airport like Memphis, which is probably ranked up there as one of the bleakest locations on Earth)

And of course, there's pretty much no other feasible way to travel long distances in the states aside from driving. Somewhat recently, Florida's governor turned down $2.4bil in federal funding to add a high speed rail line between Orlando and Tampa, which really shows how little state governments seem to give a shit about improving infrastructure at all.

That's really lame. I know there's Greyhounds, but I've taken those say...six hour trips (San Antonio, TX to Dallas) and I would never in my life use it to get across country. It's not that it's that horrible an experience, it's just...well, you get what you pay for is what I'm getting at Though even those can add up quite a bit if you go cross-country, seems like flying might just be the more practical option give or take a hundred bucks. Unless you really don't mind some of the colorful cast of characters you pick up along the way on a Greyhound

I lucked out, the Amtrak's highspeed train
has a station a little more than an hour from here

I can get to major eastern cities fairly easily

like Boston!

The rides to and from last year were pretty uneventful, save for noticing a dude in Oklahoma City in shirtless overalls waiting for another bus or something.

He was the inspiration for Senor Nipples.

I have done pretty much everything except bus and a really long train ride. I've done light rail from Long Beach, CA to downtown Los Angeles... it would be fun for longer if they had a bathroom.. I've done Amtrak to San Juan Capistrano to see a mission when I was a kid... nearly left my backpack on the train, but they let me go back to get it. I remember it was nice. Had a bus trip once on some day trip into the mountains, and again to and from an outdoor school... but it was a school bus so I don't count it really. I'd love to do a greyhound trip one day.

Most of my trips have been by car or RV... mostly the later. My parents have owned an RV since I was 8, and we took trips to visit family in the midwest every few years, or just went camping. As long as you have a good map, I love driving since you get to see so much scenery and can stop to check places out. The plus side of an RV over a car, obviously is that you have a bathroom and kitchen with you at all times. Bad side is they are top heavy (you basically have to act like a semi truck in bad weather) and suck for gas mileage.

I've also been on a plane a few times... flying from LA to Pittsburgh with various change-overs in between. It's only been a few years since I was on a plane for the first time, and I am still apprehensive about them, but it is a really awesome experience. On my flight out last December we flew over the grand canyon, and it was so gorgeous from up above!
