It's actually a bit more complex. The smarter you are, the more shortcuts you have, the faster you are to make stupid mistakes when you apply the wrong shortcut to a situation.

The second half then explains that attempting to remove problems with introspection is a circular task because self-caused problems are often by the unconscious agents which are also being used when you try to introspect.

I know both these problems well, but it is useless to know because the other parts of my mind will keep making these kinds of mistakes. I am not surprised in the least, since the sort of problems they describe are the very same which plague me and, well, probably anyone with more intelligence than they really would want to have.

But since I'm not given to rely on anybody (and often when I do, it harms me) I'll probably continue to be hindered by the biases it mentions. Oh well...

Pretty much exactly what Metal_Man88 said.

I have a saying, usually after pulling a quote or statistic (or whatever) out of my head, which is,"Now I'm not sure whether I know this as a solid fact or if my brain is making shit up again."

Honestly, some of the times that I think I'm 100% sure that I've seen a fact somewhere before, I'm wrong. The fact that I've learned so much in my lifetime on top of that makes recollection of specifics a loathsome endeavor.

I find I will tend to say something before thinking a bit deeper about it. I've been working on improving that about myself, and making progress. However, there are a lot of situations where I'll over-think, but completely go in the wrong direction due to misunderstanding someone.

I'm not really surprised by this at all. My college Spanish professor had a saying that "The smarter you are, the dumber the things you will do." (Not exact quote.)

I could really stand to improve myself... but alas. Laziness. I am such a slacker.

This applies to me well. I may be able to write things that sound like Mark Twain and H.R. Giger having a jam session on a bus in space and create confusing languages out of nonstandard keyboard symbols, but I suck at math big time. :/

I don't think those two things are really relevant to what the article is talking about. It's one thing to be bad at math, and another to be great at math but still get tripped up by simple mistakes.

I think maybe the only reason this was written is because the person who writ it thought he/she was clever. I don't make mistakes since i think things through. I believe the people who make these kinds of mistakes either only think they are clever or are just lazy.

Man, I love you.

Anyway, it does make sense. It probably would be fair to say that people who are more confident in their own intelligence would be more willing to dive into something without doing much prior research, only to find that they're wrong.

That or a thread full of President Edens.

I discussed this article with a third party that brought up a point. Usually the 'smart' people have tried enough things to have been stupid/failed more often. Which is in a way pretty logical to think.. Until you realize not everything one does is entirely undocumented somewhere..

But eh. Just a point they brought up.

Well, it is true. Only smarter people make these kinds of mistakes. Though people don't usually admit that they are not "smart" in such a direct manner, so I'm not sure if you really meant what you just said. :p

I experience this phenomenom whenever I'm looking up ROM hacking information.

Sometimes the developer would program something seamingly simple in the most convoluted rube goldburgish design you could imaging.

Other times, I'd expect a rube goldburg design, but I get surprised figuring out how simple the trick was.
