Not sure how I feel about the 3DS XL/LL. I'm still not getting one. I tried using a 3DS over the past winter holiday and while I'm glad they left the Playstation 1 era of textures and smoother, higher resolution graphics, I had trouble with the 3D. It just required too much of a specific distance and angle for my liking since, unlike 3DTVs or theaters, handhelds aren't really a fixed object. I had an easier time using the kiosks I saw at Best Buy and trying 3D there rather than holding it in my hands. The 3D was still hit or miss with my eyeballs.

Japanese customers are getting the shaft because it doesn't even ship with an AC adapter in the box. I actually like the design. It's kind of that aesthetic leap that made the DS Lite a way prettier device than the original DS.

Break Down:

-Better Battery Life (Hopefully)
-Secondary Analog Stick (Nope)
-AC Adapter (Ha. Japan. Soon you shalt not receive batteries with your devices in the not too distant future at this rate. Yeesh)
-Viewing Angles (3D, Doubt it. 2D mode, probably)

Not including AC adapters has been a thing in Japan for years. Neither the Famicom Disk System nor the Super Famicom came with them, AFAIK (both could use the original Famicom adapter). Nintendo's just carrying on the tradition.

Besides, if it ends up saving some people money, what's the problem? Just buy an adapter separately if you need one. Any place that carries the system will carry the adapters as well.

You're comparing twenty year old home consoles to a modern portable gaming system. You're kind of beating a straw man there.

So, not to really gum up your logic here on Japanese tradition ... but why did they include an AC adapter in the original Japanese 3DS and carry on that tradition when the adapter was the same as the DSi adapter? Nintendo could have easily assumed that everyone buying a 3DS naturally had a DSi or DSi LL sitting around.

It's really the minimal cost of Nintendo including one in the box and the convenience to the customer having a charger in the core package vs. the "value" proposition of having the buy it separately.

I think the AC adapter is a bit extreme. It's not really something uncommon for a company to do in the US either *cough* *Apple*. External DVD burners, Firewire adapter, USB/Thunderbolt Ethernet adapters, MagSafe 2 adapters, VGA adapters, DVI adapters, HDMI adapters. The number of added cost dongle-ization is pretty nuts.

I still feel that AC adapter is a bare minimum for a mobile electronics device today.

As I recall, in Europe at least the governments have been pushing to not include AC adapters- they're seen as a major source of "e-waste". (That's also why they were pushing for more uniformity among phone chargers- so that manufacturers will stop including them)

I wouldn't be surprised if you saw a mandate to stop including AC adapters in the future in Europe, actually.

The European Union mandated Micro USB for cell phones as a single, standard charging solution for cell phones. Companies, like Apple, who insist on using proprietary ports for charging and data transfer, make micro-usb adapters to comply with that standard.

My grandmother visited a few weeks ago and forgot her charger at home. I had a spare micro-usb cord and a wall prong (I have a few Palm USB prongs and a micro-usb cable lying around that work for anything; iPhones, iPods, Apple TV, HP/Palm cellphones, Samsung phones, and even, apparently, a Verizon dumbphones).

The funny thing about Micro USB is that, well, it's kind of most obscure one I have compared to the ton of Apple 30-pin connectors and whatnot. I only bought one to jailbreak my Apple TV. I did play around with some smartphones that weren't Apple branded that had them.

Standardization is immensely helpful.

It doesn't apply to Nintendo because they don't produce a phone. Nintendo has a habit of making a new charging port every hardware iteration or two.

I think that standardized charging helps a lot with alleviating customer confusion. I don't see it as the end all of "e-waste". More devices than ever and they all need something to charge them.

Wireless charging is the future and has the largest potential. Not the conductive pads produced by Palm/HP or Samsung. Like, there are some pretty impressive demonstrations of people beaming power to LCD TVs and such and you don't have to worry about it being effective birth control.

Also, with "e-waste" ... and charger standardization, is that it doesn't really put any stipulations on the overall design of products. I mean, look at a modern smart phone. The glass is fused to the LCD. In concept, the glass might be highly recyclable ... but it still has to be separated from the LCD component before it's recycled. It all can't magically be melted (well, they do burn it, which is bad).

A big example is Apple. In theory, their products are recyclable materials but everything is held together by glue and "magic". Sure, aluminum and glass are recyclable but in practice, separating them out to make them that state is an entirely different story. They also tried to make their power cables and adapters not burn bright pretty colors when you light them on fire.

Going back to Nintendo. It's good that they at least keep the same proprietary charger around for a few product cycles. It's still a long way to go.

Have they even announced that there will be a "pro" circle pad add-on for the 3DSXL? It may be that they've abandoned that idea already.

I seem to recall reading that the Circle Pad Pro is only used as an 'additional' control scheme, and games cannot require it (which makes sense). But if it was built into the hardware, they couldn't really have that limitation anymore. That could lead to a fracture in the userbase, people who have the 3DS and didn't/won't pony up the $25 for a CPP, and those who have it built in, potentially losing sales on games which use it as the only method of control. Or something like that, I'm paraphrasing and I read it a while ago.

Plus they'd have to extend the thickness of the console considerably to fit ZR and ZL in there. (Then there's the whole only a half-dozen games actually support the damn thing..)

To be honest, I have one, and while it's better than using the touch screen or the face buttons for camera movements, I generally had to push the pad at least a third out of the center before I got any sort of reaction in the game.

A recent article has pointed out something the 3DS XL will be great for. Due to the larger screen size, you'll be able to play DS/VC games in 1:1 pixel mode without having to strain your eyes on the tiny display!

Well, Nintendo said they won't do a XL or lite (or whatever) version of the 3DS. I dont really like the design of the 3DS XL. And it would be cool, if they would've build the Circle Pad pro in it. I mean, how big will be this thing, if there will be a Circle Pad pro XL? And the Image will be streched. Nah. Keeping the good ol' 3DS.

They didn't say anything about an XL one though. I'm fine with my little 3DS though no problems.

I'm laughing at the people who thought they'd add a second circle pad though. Nintendo's not dumb enough to screw users over that much.

Yeah, because Nintendo has never later on included add-ons to consoles that were a requirement for some of their flagship titles.



MotionPlus = Add-on that was pretty much included with those "flagship" games until they put it into actual remotes and discounted the add-on, and even then most games don't use the feature.

Expansion Pak = Mostly optional add-on that was already included in "flagship" titles, and for most N64 games wasn't even necessary unless you needed 640x480 rendering that badly.

No, but there were two big ones that did require it - Banjo-Tooie and Perfect Dark. (there was some limited stuff you could do in PD without it, but not much...)

EDIT: Oh, shit, I forgot Majora's Mask. I can't remember which of them came with it, pretty sure it was MM.

You can't really compare consoles with portable systems. Different life-cycles, different role. The DS had the original DS, DS Lite, DSi, and DSi XL. There was only one GameCube, and only one Wii. (Different colors don't count.)


Fusing the Circle Pad Pro with the system would be dumb. Unlike the Wii Motion Plus and Expansion pack, which simply added functionality to the system, the Circle Pad Pro changes the control interface of the system. This would be the equivalent of them changing all future Wii remotes to just be Classic Controllers, or to be permanently welded to the Nunchuk gun thingy.

It was actually Donkey Kong 64 that came with it. There was even the Jungle Green N64 with it built in as a bundle!

I always forget Donkey Kong 64. I think it's a subconcious defense mechanism.

That said, I know I got mine with a different game, because I never had DK64. Pretty sure it was Majora's Mask for me.

So, the other day I got to try a 3DS XL at GameStop for a bit. The metal clamp on it prevented me from holding it entirely proper, but I could already tell it was more comfy. I'm hoping GameStop continues to offer the trade in deal for a while, because it will be a while before I can afford to switch.


In other news, I just got New Super Mario Bros. 2! Finally!

For those of you that care, New Super Mario Bros. 2's DLC is coming out soon in Japan. I've seen a comment saying the levels they've shown so far feel very ROM hack-ish, and I'd have to agree; they range anywhere from "gives a lot of coins for no reason" to "mixes elements in an interesting way" to "almost Kaizo-like difficulty", depending on the pack.

Other kinda noteworthy news:
- that Denpa Men game on the eShop came out a little while ago and apparently is pretty good, though I haven't tried it;
- Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 are coming out in a week or so in America;
- Code Princess is also out in about a week.
