I was quite shocked when I first heard of this.

To be honest, I'm not quite for this. There's a reason they imposed those fines, after all.

There should be a more balanced censorship system in place, to be blunt (i.e. don't censor political issues).

So wait, this was spurred because a woman's ass was shown on a show?

...way to go.

I'm for freedom of speech and stuff, but I think there is a real place for standards of decency. If not to prevent children from being exposed to swearing and nudity too much (Really, it does have an effect, even if it just makes them have a potty-mouth.), but to kind of require more creative programming, rather than just getting ratings because you have the most swears and nudity.

I feel like the existence of ready access to the internet changes this equation, though- I mean, for all your "standards of decency" it doesn't mean much with so much material outside of those standards readily accessible.

I can understand getting rid of most swear words, though most make me chuckle -- they bleep out the word "hole" in asshole.

As far as nudity is concerned... whoop dee doo, a nipple. Everybody has nipples, yet men's nipples aren't censored out. I feel that as long as people aren't rubbing up against each other or initiating in coitus or masturbation on TV that it should be allowed. Nothing hurts as much as feeling ashamed of your body!

TV is much more accessible to young children. Also a lot of stuff is released first or exclusively (at least officially) on TV. But yeah, of course, it should be parents making sure their kids aren't watching/browsing bad stuff.

I'm honestly kind of worried that TV will gradually just get too stupid... more so.

This is exactly what I am worried about because of the Supreme Court's ruling. I don't want this country to become like what's depicted in Idiocracy, but I don't want it to be an oppressive country either. Also, several people are still unsure as to how to make the V-Chip work and make an effective filter.

Pretty much all ATSC stations (not sure about DVB) broadcast ratings information with their programming, and I imagine built in TV guides will too, and basically all satellite and digital cable services have built in filtering. It isn't very hard at all. They usually even have descriptive text if a kid asks to unlock a show, but really if the kid is younger than like 8-10, they probably shouldn't be watching TV unattended if this is going to be the future.

I completely ditched TV about 4 or 5 years ago. I wish other people would do the same.

Nudity bans and such are a cultural things. There are other cultures where it doesn't matter at all. To be honest, it will probably be time to put the entire censorship thing in the trash and instead simply make special "Clean" channels for those who can't take it or want to keep their children away from it, rather than trying to enforce it on other things where it makes no sense. This is seemingly the sort of ruling the court gave, as such the broadcast TV segment appears to serve as this "Clean Zone" for now. But that may change in the future.

I don't watch TV either, since TV sucks.

We are actually planning to. Getting too expensive. *shrug*

I never really saw the problem with swearing on TV. It's not like it's increasing the bad habit of swearing in general, kids still learn from relatives and friends. Much worse than TV's effect.

I can attest to this as a living example. I didn't swear until I went to school, because that's what all the "cool" kids do.

It amazes me that people still pay for cable when there's a million other better options out there.

As opposed to the current state, in which you get ratings because you have the most violence and near-nuditiy?

I have the same feeling with regards to internet forums. If I can't say "shit" on a forum because "zomg think of the children", then maybe if you're sheltering children that much you shouldn't let them on the internet.

I totally agree although i do get sick of when people put fuck(ing) in front of everything they say. Its lost all meaning now.

Welp this pretty much shows why censorship towards nudity and swearing is fucking pointless.

Swearing especially. You could beat the fuck out of someone on TV regardless of when it's being aired, but the guy getting beaten wasn't allowed to call his attacker an asshole.

Something seemed off about that.
