Here's to 10 more years of Windows XP! :specialed:

Seriously, if Microsoft couldn't convince a lot of people to upgrade with Windows 7, they sure as hell aren't going to do any better with 8...

To be fair, LXDE and Xfce are pretty damn great in my book. I've always found the "desktop linux sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!" attitude to be ridiculously, almost disgustingly overblown. (Doesn't compare to OS X, but they easily match XP's experience!) Then again, in those two, I imagine someone will find something wrong where I really can't...

Also oh god, could you imagine the bitching that would fly around if people stuck to XP that long

As for 8... I was really excited for it, and was even warming up to the start screen slightly (it's better than 7's start menu as far as I'm concerned, I miss XP's), but holy shit Microsoft has just been shooting themselves in the foot repeatedly. It's just... kinda cementing my choice to shift over to OS X.

XP, ftw. Although I really would try Windows 7 just to see if I liked it or not.

Maybe Windows 8, if I'm lucky.

Unfortunately, it seems to run a lot slower than the Consumer Preview in my VM, so I can't play with it much...

I did a Consumer Preview test with Oracle's VM VirtualBox and then if it does work, I used EASEUS Partition Manager for a smaller partition for Windows 8.

I haven't messed with the Consumer Preview of Windows 8 lately, so chances are I may not do the Release Preview.

My favourite part is the people claiming that Windows 8 makes Battlefield 3 run faster. Especially those who attribute it to the new scheduler.

I doubt they have a clue what a scheduler does in a preemptive multitasking operating system.

Paulguy's Post configuration
Release preview didn't work for me in virtualbox after I installed the virtualbox additions. It just kept freezing every few seconds.

Also, I suppose a better scheduler could improve performance... slightly, but not likely to help much for a game that's likely already given a high priority.

This works, but it’s clumsy and makes a mockery of having all the icons displayed on screen in the first place. Every time I’m forced to use it, it’s another failure for the Microsoft design team.

Using a feature that Microsoft deliberately added to the Start Screen and touts on several occasions... is a failure for Microsoft's design team? People have bizarre standards.

It's not quite like that. Yes, the search bar is an intentional element. But the fact that a user would have to rely on it only because the initial method of finding a program is too slow/frustrating to use is the design failure.

All I can say is, "Why, Microsoft Design Team, why? You used to be so great."

Hm? That is exactly how the Start Menu worked. "Ugh, I can't dig through this whole list, I'll just write the name."

a vertical list is logical, organized. it's very easy to navigate. it's concise

a horizontal-scrolling screen with a lot of negative space makes visually searching for a particular thing a bitch

searching is supposed to compliment that conciseness. it's not supposed to be a replacement for a terribly designed interface that's still being supported despite how functionally bad it is

Maybe in Vista and 7, but I never needed a search option for XP's start menu. Ever.

(Mostly because I keep it organized and tiny.)

@Nicole: Again, that's slightly different. The Search Bar is meant for when the list gets too large and unwieldily to effectively look through. Or for when you're feeling lazy and don't want to look through the list. But if you have to use the search bar even when the list of programs is small, that's a problem.

Edit: Yikes, double ninja'd.

Microsoft claims several times that the human mind is better at finding the location of something in a 2D plane versus a list. Also, Windows 8 does have the list view.

Now that's that kind of research I expect from their design team. If that's what their research shows, then I think we should at least give it a chance. One thing I've learned is that Microsoft's design team is one of the best, especially when it comes to user-centered design.

Paulguy's Post configuration
I often find myself using the search bar in windows since I'm so used to linux's ability to run anything from anywhere. All binaries are in 1 place, so I can easily call upon applications where I know what they're called.

But for people used to windows, or just people looking to find a seldom-used but still needed application, I could see the annoyance. Though Windows's Vendor->Product organization was always pretty disgusting compared to Category->Application organization.

EDIT: Ninja'd. In response to the 2D plane argument, I could see that, but I think the problem people are finding is the icons aren't "iconic" enough. If the design of things was a bit simpler and just had like, a picture of a calculator and the word "Calculator" or a picture of the Quake logo and the word "Quake" or something... kind of like how icons in everything has been since pretty much ever, there'd be no problems. A lot of touch interfaces pretty much extend the well-known "icon with descriptive text" to making the icons larger, and that seems to work fantastic. I think the general complaint should be that the Metro UI is really fairly "busy", with lots of complex patterns and poor contrast between colors, and little animating googaws, making the scanning process impractical. They've replaced the standard Windows desktop unnecessarily.

These claims have been researched and proven as Fitts law. They are relatively stable claims.

The confusion is that those are old articles, so I'm not even sure what they are doing currently. I will have to see what their RC is like before I comment any further.
