Ugh... computer problems.

Anyways, I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2, 2.20 gigs of RAM, with an Athlon XP 3200+ processor. Video card is a Radeon 9550/X1050 Series.

I'm running the latest distro of DirectX 9.0c, and NOTHING RUNS.
Yes, I have the latest ATI drivers.
I get nothing other than a flicker of a window, or a fatal error.
On the Orange Box though, I get "Direct3D failed to initialize"

Ugh... I wanna be able to play Portal again...

EDIT: Oh yeah, and Direct3D fails to run during the DxDiagnostic tests.

Try reinstalling directx, or add -dxlevel 70 to the shortcuts. I had a similar problem with DX9, so all my Source games run on DirectX 7 instead of 9.

Well, I just installed DirectX again, and uninstalled the Orange Box, so that's in the process of reinstalling. Would adding -dxlevel 70 work for non-Steam games as well?

EDIT: Nope, neither worked :/

Uhm...your specs are likely off, since you can't have 2.20GB RAM (and likely have 2) and I have strong doubts you know but I'll ask anyways...

First off, do you actually know WHAT your video card MODEL really is? There's actually a difference between your 9550 and your X1050 (the X1050, supposedly, being much better). That could be your problem right there because of using incompatible drivers for your video card. Having up-to-date drivers doesn't do a damned thing if you have the WRONG MODEL drivers. Having EXACT drivers helps greatly.

Did you, by any chance, have a driver CD that came with your RADEON card/computer? I'd consider uninstalling/reinstalling your device drivers with said CD unless it really wasn't a true-blue device driver disc that was given to you (which happens with PC bundles, for instance).

I forget if X1050 uses PCIe and 9550 uses PCI...I'm guessing that's how it goes. If you know what those are then that should be a matter of deduction. Open the comp box to see. If it's in the same white slots like a modem would be in, it's a 9550. If it's in a usually black and longer slot then it's likely a PCIe slot and likely a X1050.

That's about all I have for you with what you've given me.

Pictures are worth 1000 words. These white things are PCI slots. (Ignore the black one. )

Well, problem pretty much solved.
Our 250gig hard drive basically died, with everything on it.
Switched to a different motherboard, etc. Apparently all it'll take to fix is a Windows reinstall. :/ So once my dad gets a replacement hard drive, he'll reinstall, get back on his motherboard, and take it from there.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and I don't -really- know what I'm talking about

Yeah, that's been tried

Oh well, so I'll be a week without gaming. As far as I know, 2D games still work, so it might be time to pull out Worms or a SNES emu

well then obviously your GC is a piece of shit. I have a 64mbDDR ATI (Dont know what number-mumbo-jumbo it is) and it runs some games pretty decent. I can say it can run World of Warcraft in the medium scale, but at full blast, Its not worth it.

But Catalyst Controll Center is a must have for all ATI GC products, if the game or whatever you want to run wont work after running it. Then you need to buy new parts for your PC that is able to actually run it.

Edit- Well, after reading your specs, something is wrong with the way you installed something. Hell your games that you listed should be able to run on it, so ignore about me saying its a pos. But its something you are doing thats messing everything up. So I have no idea.
