Would a Theory be ok if a Majority of people agreed with it?
Some stuff is unknown, some people try to come up with an answer. If most people agreed with it would it be interesting enough to be TCRF-worthy.

I noticed that when a someone comes up with a good theory a page can look more interesting. This could be for things with unknown uses or other things. But how do you think of them. Would they be ok if many people agreed upon the theory beforehand?
Bonus Question:'Trivia' in Pages, Good Idea or Bad Idea?

I hate the idea, unless the person who is theorizing knows the subject incredibly, incredibly well.

There is a difference between, say, "OH I JUST FOUND THIS NEW UNUSED GRAPHIC I GUESS IT'S FOR THIS TOTALLY UNRELATED STUFF I JUST DREAMED UP" and "Hm. This is an unused item pickup-thing. It's unused, but when I watch the RAM, a counter goes up when I collect it, and my shot type resets to the default. I bet this was a shot powerup at some point, because all of this evidence suggests it." One is an intelligent, well-reasoned theory. The other one is just baseless speculation.

Amen.

There are ways to make pages interesting and not sleep-inducing, but this is not one of them.

Speculation would make more sense in Talk/Discussion pages or this forum, but not main article pages.

SIDEWAYS SLASH
The number of people that agree with an idea is irrelevant, specially if the idea itself is terrible. (Zora's Alcove contains the triforce, by the way)

Sometimes speculation ISN'T baseless and likely... but that is so rare, it's better to axe all speculation off.

For example, "hey I just found this unused song" is informative, and true. "Hey I just found this song that totally sounds like a boss battle this suggests the game had boss battles at some point" is simply a lie.

But again, sometimes theories are done tastefully and there is solid and concrete evidence for it... but we should be reporting this evidence. Pretty much like in Rahan's example.

Rahan said it best. I had a bigger post planned, but he already said everything I was going to say.

And technically, speculation is by definition without solid evidence. Once a theory has firm and logical evidence to back it up, it ceases to be speculation. Even if it seems really logical and people agree with it, that doesn't make it any more right.

I guess in application, this will always be a fairly fuzzy subject that will have to be considered on a case by case basis. To be absolutely concrete, it'd be impossible to claim that anything is anything, and just present it as some unused something, but that's just silly.

I'm okay with the occasional "perhaps this was once used for [x]?", as long as it's short and sweet and makes sense. Don't go claiming that a puzzle game once had boss battles, or that an enemy's color was changed because of Nintendo's "draconian censorship policies", unless you have some really solid evidence to back those claims up (I've had to remove the latter on several occasions).

I'd be interested if the theory was highly plausible and well researched. I mean, so long as we don't get, "Tails was the guardian of the Master Emerald!" all over again.

I'd be for it, so long as evidence points that way anyways.

I think theories would be a good thing. As already stated, they would however need to be properly researched and provide evidence to corroborate them. A theory without evidence is also without credibility. But the most important thing of all is to keep them off the main page of the article. Not only will they be non factual, but they will probably be full on complicated and hard to understand information, and possibly even be a dry read. The discussion page is probably the best place to have them. Maybe, on a case to case basis, there could even be a small comment on the main page about what something could have been used for and then a link to the theory on the discussion page.

Well, that's my two cents.

Theories and speculation (aside from the short bits I mentioned) will remain confined to Talk/Discussion pages for the foreseeable future. I do not want them in articles, nor do I want separate sections/pages dedicated to them. I'd like TCRF to remain a trustworthy source of factual information (unlike, say, The Mechanical Maniacs).

There's already a ton of baseless speculation on the Wiki, I see it all the time.

Not criticizing your admirable moderating efforts, BMF, just commenting on the topic in general.

This is very similar to some discussions had with respect to the CWCki. :p I guess every wiki has to deal with some amount of speculation.

Some levels of speculation is OK (for example, suggestions of just what, exactly, the thing that pops out of the ? box in SMB3's lost bonus round is).

However, anything requiring some serious acrobatics like "This unused → in the font clearly meant that at some point you could triple backflip jump" is junk.

So, for the most part, don't bother.
