The good thing about vanilla contest though, is that it's easy to just get down into and making a level. By allowing other things like ExGFX, sure you might get some really fancy levels that use that. But it may also discourage others who don't want to put down the time that is needed to deal with SMW's tile = object structure, from making a level.

SMW really has most of what is needed to make a good level with that engine. While adding in new stuff sure can add to the game, I seldom see it done right. Then again, I suppose I am kinda broken after having spent a few years playing some of the things SMWC spit out.

I don't think I would have participated in this contest were it not vanilla. I feel like I am far out of date with respect to the tools that have been developed to hack this game in the past six years or so, and I wouldn't have had the impetus to catch up just to make one level.

On the other hand, now that I'm familiar with Lunar Magic again, I've been flirting with the idea of making a serious hack of serious length. I might as well learn how sprite editing/importing/whatever works so that I, too, can have a firebar. So if future contests allow non-vanilla submissions, I would probably enter those too.

I'm also cool with running one of these in the future, although I'm not sure exactly what judging standards you guys would like me to apply. I'm really looking forward to seeing the results so that I have a clear idea of what kind of analysis is being used here. (Also, I've recently gotten the impression that I'm not all that well-liked in these parts, so I'm a bit worried about the number of entrants to a competition people know I'd be judging...)

In general I agree with Miasmir, though it might be interesting to see a content where there is some technically-chocolate element that everyone has to deal with (say, ban spinjumping or decrease gravity or something), that could be interesting as well...

I think restrictions produce interesting results - the original SMW was very limited in the grand scheme of things, especially compared to what the hackers have added to the engine over time. A limited toolset forces you to use it creatively.

Well my idea was going to be "Design a world-1 level that would appear in a Mario game." If things got too outlandish or gimmicky, it would probably be docked marks anyways.

Plus, graphics probably wouldn't be worth much, beyond "is it eye burning or not." So Vanilla stuff would be fine.

Everyone knows aesthetics are way more important than graphics. I do kinda want to open it up away from vanilla though because there's only so much you can do with SMW enemies, and a lot of people would prefer classic goombas probably....

Actually, there's an idea. A "Secret-ingredient" style contest, where a resource is supplied, and it has to be used well in a level.

On the other hand, I just sat and thought about possible secret ingredient choices for several minutes without coming up with anything particularly cool. Clearly it has to have some serious thought put into it.

Both of the other judges are having problems and don't have them quite done. So, one more week.
