The New York Senate will (finally) vote on the gay marriage bill tonight.
It passed the assembly and the governor plans to sign it if it passes. This is the last hurdle. Cross your fingers everyone! |

The New York Senate has approved the amendments to the gay marriage bill paving the way for a final vote in a few minutes. The bipartisan vote was 36 in favor to 26 against!
Edit: Sorry guys... a final vote remains, it could be slightly different but it's still widely expected to pass.
Edit 2: The bill passed its final vote. New York has just become the 6th and most populous state in the nation to legalize gay marriage!
The vote was 33 in favor, 29 against.

While no change in policy has happened, I thought I would point out that the American Psychological Association is calling on state and federal officials to stop anti-gay legal measures and to legalize same-sex marriage.
The scientific and professional organization's guiding body voted unanimously at its annual meeting this week in Washington to declare its support for "full marriage equality for same-sex couples."
The resolution "clarifies the Association's support for same-sex marriage" in light of new research, the group said. A similar resolution in 2004 opposed discrimination against same-sex relationships, but refrained from a more formal policy recommendation.
All the while, more Republicans sign anti-gay pledge
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R., Minn.) and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum have signed a pledge from the National Organization for Marriage to oppose gay marriage at several levels of the federal government.
But former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who has sought to burnish his credentials as an evangelical Christian, declined to sign it, possibly putting him at odds with the social conservatives he is trying to court in Iowa. The National Organization for Marriage is running a four-day Iowa bus tour leading up to the Aug. 13 straw poll in Ames.
Legislative action on gay marriage bills could come late this year, but it's highly unlikely. In any event, 2012 will be a very big year, I can assure that. |

I've been wanting to bump this thread back to life - there's a lot of potential for discussion here. So here I go with a not-too-extensive update on what's been going these past few months.
Pew is the next firm to find at least a plurality support for gay marriage
With 47% in favor and 43% against, Pew points out that the numbers have changed by a whopping 33 points since 2004. Nate Silver predicted a 2 percent decrease in opposition every year, and it seems like the trend has held up well. This is also the first year that the demographic of those aged 50 to 64 no longer oppose gay marriage by a majority. Other polling firms have found similar results, including CNN and Gallup.
For those who missed it back in February, Washington state and Maryland legalized gay marriage. New Jersey also passed a bill to legalize gay marriage, but Christie vetoed it.
Eight couple are suing Nevada in federal court over gay marriage ban.
States that have referenda to ban gay marriage this year:
North Carolina: sometime in May - likely to pass
Minnesota: this November - likely to be rejected

Maine: this November - tossup
Appeals court rejects California's Proposition 8
A federal appeals court ruled against California's voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage Tuesday, arguing the ban unconstitutionally singles out gays and lesbians for discrimination.
In a split decision, a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found the state's Proposition 8 "works a meaningful harm to gays and lesbians" by denying their right to civil marriage in violation of the 14th Amendment.
"Very soon, Proposition 8 will be gone forever," said Kristin Perry, one of two women who challenged the ban in federal courts along with a male same-sex couple. "Today marks the culmination of what has been a transformational year."
This is about the case that was covered for most of the beginning of this thread. Prop 8 has been ruled unconstitutional now by both the district court and now the circuit court of appeals; the case is now pending review by the court as a whole (instead of just 3 judges) and it could potentially be appealed to the supreme court later. |

I found more information on the North Carolina amendment; it will be held on May 8, the second Tuesday of the month. Governor Beverly Perdue is campaigning against it, and a poll has shown support for the ban has fallen dramatically since last October.
According to Nate Silver, it's likely that North Carolina will vote in favor of a gay marriage ban, so if it actually fails instead, then that means support for gay marriage is rising faster than predicted (or opposition is falling faster). This would be great news for Minnesota and Maine, who would be voting on the issue this November. |

The North Carolina gay marriage ban has been approved. What is more depressing is the margin by which it passed: 61% to 39% 
It was always far-fetched for it to be defeated, but I was hoping for something really narrow, as was the case in California and Maine. Granted that North Carolina isn't nearly as liberal as those states, I believed that the four years since Prop 8 would have been enough time to sway public opinion in our favor.
Oh well, Minnesota and Maine are the next battlegrounds this November. |

Ought to be interesting again to see things when it comes back up to the vote again here. I myself will again be voting for whatever answer goes for "go for gay marriage!" because it just makes a lot of sense to do it.
Also, maybe on a more snarky, humorous tone I guess, someone posted this on Twitter in response to a gay marriage thing I happened to watch play out and I was rather amused at it, though apologies if you can't read it (and if it's been posted before). It's the best quality I could even get the pic at. :/

I, for one, am extremely disappointed in the outcome of that amendment proposition. I will say, however, that it may have been a bit skewed by the fact that the amendment was assigned to be voted on the same day as Republican primaries. Very sneaky of them, I think. Most of the North Carolinians I know were against the amendment, and I can only ask that we keep in mind the more levelheaded citizens before bashing anybody's homelands. =/
