It looks pretty neat--5 GB free. After being dismayed over running out of space on Dropbox, this looks like an ideal solution. I have the software on my computer, but have not decided to pair it with an account.

Looking ahead, were I to run out of space here, I have several google accounts and it's a sinecure to make more. However I doubt that it will ever come to that .

Have any of you heard about this? Does it live up to expectations?

(Of course, it only came out last week.)

I don't see Google Drive as a replacement for Dropbox. I run it concurrently to supplement it.

Google Drive, in my eye, is a great upgrade to Google Docs. It keeps the core functionality of what Google Docs does well and adds OS level integration.

The biggest praise for the service is what it doesn't do: Google+.

I remember the original GDrive beta announcement a number of years back. Petabytes of storage, they said.

Until they bring that idea back, I'm staying with a combination of Dropbox and my own file server on a fibre pipe.

Yeah, testing this myself, seems pretty decent and all, but not in the position to upload anything personal after seeing what they do behind our backs.

I would not trust google with anything today, to be perfectly honest with you all.

I read it. I'm still not afraid of using Google Drive. I mean, color me ignorant, but any of the services in that link are letting you keep your stuff on their servers. I think it's basically the same thing painted by different lawyers.

If there's one thing that can be taken from YouTube, it's that companies and people own their stuff. DMCA wouldn't exist and things wouldn't get yanked from that website if there wasn't a certain amount of ownership somewhere.

That being said ... if Google Docs in Google Drive are private, it's safe to assume that it's relatively private. Copyright is still copyright. That's just some terms of service. They just wrote it that way because it's part of their machine to improve heuristics and efficiency.

You don't seem to get the point here.

If I read this right, if you upload anything to Google Drive that you yourself made, then you lose ALL rights to it.

You are licensing all files you upload to the service to Google to do basically whatever they want with it. You know how you can have a copyrighted work but license it under, say, Creative Commons, so other people can use it without getting sued? Yeah, this is the same thing except it's Google and it's basically everything.

Very scary.

Dropbox's terms seem a little less vague, but according to this article on the Verge, could be construed as giving more rights.

In the end a lot of those rights you need to give someone for cloud storage to work.

Maybe I'll back off of using it for a while. I was playing devil's advocate. The terms of service state that the uploader is still the owner of the upload but their immunity stipulations are excessive on Google's part.

It is clear that Google heavily supports a relatively extreme freedom of data stance with their terms.
But I never rely on Google to store any data that cannot be replaced or is protected from prying eyes of any kind.

Also, Nicole, there is a difference in skydrive's wording;
"...solely to the extent necessary to provide the service."

Google's does not include this. It essentially says "we can do anything with it. Period. Beyond what is needed to provide the service."

Great idea, next they will make a Google Bank and ask you to donate your money at any time. Put in your money, POOF, it's gone!

Really, don't be suckered by their lies. You're better off just randomly uploading your data to random shady 100megsfree sites.

Well, yes. But the only arbitrer of what is necessary is Microsoft- they could come up with a new "service enhancement" and say whatever it requires is necessary.

I mean, what do people fear Google is going to do?

Why yes, I am a news reporter who somehow gets income posting extreme responses to tech news stories in obscure web forums. Only the genius mind of GuyPerfect could see through my plan. Curses, foiled by the person with a Netscape Now! button! What ever will I do?

True, but rather than calmly point it out like you would he did it his way, which involves implying I have some sinister motive behind it. He should learn from you and stop hiding behind one-liners.

Also the random megsfree sites may in fact not have a policy like Google--thus it may still be true that your data is safer on said sites. This is Google we're talking about here. If they can destroy your privacy or take your data and make enough money off of those actions, they will.

Not gonna do it to the random user but, it's food for thought when people go around blindly believing that Google's services have no catch at all.

How have I not heard of this until now? They're certainly not advertising it well.

Also, this related article seems pretty relevant to the current discussion.
