That kind of thing belongs in an Onion article, not in real life.

Arizona and Tennessee seem to be trying to outderp each other lately.

This can't possibly be constitutional ... could it?

The provision allowing parents to bring charges against an instructor for condoning "gateway sexual activity" is part of a comprehensive rewrite of the state's sex education law, known as the "family life curriculum." The current family life curriculum already calls for emphasis on abstinence. The new law calls for "emphatic and exclusive" focus on abstinence.

From the real article.

Critics also said the current law already has enough emphasis on abstinence and change is unnecessary. On the other hand, Stewart said studies have shown that abstinence-based sex education does not work in lowering teen pregnancies or sexually transmitted disease.

This is nothing new. Abstinence doesn't work, it never has worked, and it will continue to not work, especially when it's taught as the only thing.

The bill was largely drafted by former Sen. David Fowler, who now heads the Family Action Council of Tennessee. The FACT website says the bill was inspired partly by an episode at a Nashville high school wherein a contract instructor used graphic illustrations of sexual organs in a class. A key feature of the bill, the website said, is making Planned Parenthood and other organizations that provide sex education information in schools, subject to the $500 civil fine.

Basically, they want to keep everyone in the Dark Ages about how things actually work. The abstinence method is the "Don't do it. Why? Because I said so, and that's why." method, and we all know how that one works.

Basically the same as usual. Gotta love the scapegoating too, because clearly this is PP's fault.

It's almost funny how taboo sex is in the united states, while on the other end of the spectrum, violence is everywhere in the media. Over here it's kinda the other way around instead, and for the better if you ask me.

Makes me think... is it really news when a stupid government does a stupid thing? It seems more like "Predictable and unimportant" to me, since the people who elected that government are just gonna keep doing it, anyway.

Sex and sexual imagery is actually extremely prevalent in North American media. It's very interesting to me how practically everything is sexualized around here, yet the actual act of sex, or even talking about sex honestly, is very much forbidden and can lead to very large controversies.

Considering that I am actually from Tennessee and can see the stupidity of all the abstinence based propaganda--although I never actually heard about this specific attempt--I say that there are definitely extremists here that ruin the public image of this state.

I believe that I am very open minded and not religious in the slightest, so I tend to stick with friends that are more or less like me. However, in the South, there are all sorts of closed minded statements that I hear a few times every day that make me cringe inside.

However, never let it taint your views of that Kentucky Fried Chicken

Maybe we'll both wake up several centuries from now and either find that A. Society has advanced to the point where more or less everything is right with the world or B. Due to nuclear war society had been pushed backwards several hundreds of years to where even if the government is insane, it'd be perfectly sane in the context of the post-nuke age.

(Not specifically responding to you)

Heh, this does not reflect Tennessee in its entirety. Most of the country-side and a small portion of the urban areas might hold views similar to those demonstrated in the link, but where I currently live it's not that bad. My personal opinion is that living near Nashville is best. I'm not sure about Memphis as I have only been there once or twice.

Politically, I feel that it is the more extreme conservative republicans that are pushing for legislation like these--Tennessee is a red state--However, there are still a fair amount of Democrats living in the urbanized areas. In fact, the previous Tennessee governor was democratic. Also, not everyone in a southern state are hicks, haha. (That seems to be a popular misconception)

One thing that I do like about Tennessee is how many friendly and caring people there are nearby. It would be near impossible for a Kitty Genovese type scenario to take place.

Oh I know. I've been there a few times and just LOVED the area. There were some... uh, hicks there, and every cop kept looking at me funny, but people are nice.

I'd rather live there than where I am now, anyway. It'd be much easier to get a job.
