I bought a 3DS after the price dropped because I had come into a couple hundred bucks and people said it was really awesome. I still only have one 3DS game for it (OoT3D) and I don't play it that often. It's neat, but there are other things I could be doing.

Always found personally that Nintendo consoles were pretty much a money sink after the advent of high-definition accessible PC gaming. That said, I played the shit out of Link's Awakening on the GBC.

From Nintendo's investor presentation:
I would like to tell you next about the product profitability of the Nintendo 3DS hardware, which affected our profit the most in the last fiscal year. As I informed you before, in the first half of this fiscal term we will get out of the situation that we sell the hardware below cost. We anticipate the improvement of the product profitability of the hardware alone.

Huh. It should still be below cost for parts. I guess they must be factoring in R&D into the cost.

Of course they're profitable based on parts alone. ¬_¬

R&D plus overheads mean that even if they sold it at the cost price for parts, they'd still be losing money.

Trying to read the tea leaves for answers is only a bit more accurate than trying to guess how Nintendo is doing based on revenue alone. Many times they just continue in the face of massive losses, thoroughly determined to make their current strategy work. So far it hasn't failed.

But it doesn't matter much to me anymore--I'm likely to just have a PC for the next generation of gaming.

Nintendo will need to "win E3" again if they hope to get a lot of people to actually buy another $250 device, especially so soon after the 3DS. Otherwise, I can only foresee the same cost problem that the 3DS had, and the same solution, or worse, some sort of "trade in your wii for a discount" program.

I think the slow economy might have had some impact to all this as well (beyond just the fact that the strong yen is sucking up their profit). There are a few games (plus the 3DS) that I haven't bought solely because I need to save money. :/
